SPORTS WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 14, 2018 1B FOLLOW US ON TWITTER @EOSPORTS HERMISTON PENDLETON Sorey cleared to play in semifinal East Oregonian The Pendleton Bucks got some good news on Tuesday. Quarterback Trent Sorey, who left the quarterfinal game last Fri- day against Scappoose with a knee injury, has been cleared to play. Sorey, a senior, suffered a bone bruise, and an MRI was clear of any tears in the MCL or ACL. Defensive ends Beau Skinner (ankle) and Ruger Deming (shoulder) also have been cleared to play, according to Pendleton coach Erik Davis. “We are going to take it day by day and limit the contact,” Pendleton coach Erik Davis said. “This is such a huge opportu- nity for these kids. We are excited Trent has been cleared, but we will have both of our quarterbacks ready to play.” Pendleton will play Thurston at 5:30 p.m. Sat- urday at Hillsboro Stadium in the Class 5A semifinals. It’s the first semifinal game for the Bucks since 1977. “We are four days away from doing something that has never been done at Pendleton,” Davis said. “It’s a huge game.” Tickets, which can be purchased at the gate, or online, are $10 for adults and $5 for students (age 5 and older). No passes will be accepted. Prices are set by the OSAA. There also will be a $5 parking fee (cash only). His late game heroics of lead- ing comebacks in the fourth quarter or overtime to win games take up nearly an entire page of Seattle’s weekly game notes. Except this year, when the fourth-quarter mistakes by Wilson have overshad- owed his late-game suc- cesses. And those mistakes are part of the reason Seat- tle is 4-5 and faces such a critical game on Thursday night against Green Bay in the quest to stay in the NFC playoff conversation. Seattle is 1-8 in its last nine games decided by one score or less. Over the past two seasons, Seattle is 5-11 in one-score games. They used to be the types of games in which Seattle thrived, with Wilson finding a way to score and pull out a victory in the closing minutes, or defensively making the nec- essary stops to stem any late rally by an opponent. But that page in Seattle’s game notes detailing his 24 comebacks in the fourth quarter and overtime has just three entries over the past two seasons. “There’s two things SEAHAWK FOOTBALL Seattle Seahawks (4-5) Green Bay Packers (4-4-1) Thursday, 5:20 p.m., at Century Link Field, Seattle TV: FOX AP Photo/Alex Gallardo Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson passes against the Los Angeles Rams during the first half in an NFL football game on Sunday in Los Angeles. there. It goes back to fin- ishing right. If we can make one or two plays here or there across the board — offensive, defensive, spe- cial teams, whatever it may be — we can turn that around really easily. That’s the great thing,” Wilson said. “The second thing is ... we’re in every game and every game is really close and every game we’re right there to win the game. I’m looking forward to that turn- ing around. We have great confidence in that and what we’re going to do.” There’s no doubting that in stretches this season Wil- son has played great. He’s thrown for 14 touchdowns with just two interceptions over the past five games. And the success or fail- ure of Seattle in the fourth quarter is not solely his responsibility. But there’s also been a pattern of crucial late-game mistakes by Wilson that has See MAGIC/2B Sports shorts THIS DATE IN SPORTS Rutgers coach Stringer gets 1,000th career win PISCATAWAY, N.J. (AP) — Rut- gers coach C. Vivian Stringer became the fifth Division I women’s basketball coach to win 1,000 games when the Scarlet Knights beat Central Connecti- cut State 73-44 on Tuesday night. Stringer joined Pat Summitt, Geno Auriemma, Tara VanDerveer and Sylvia Hatchell in the 1,000-victory club. Division II coach Barbara Ste- vens also has won over 1,000 games. The 70-year-old Stringer is the first African-American coach to reach that milestone. The Hall of Famer got her career started at Cheney State in 1971 before moving on to Iowa and finally Rutgers in 1995. Many of her former players from the three schools she led to Final Fours were on hand to witness the milestone victory. South Carolina coach Dawn Staley made the trip to New Jersey with her staff that included Jolette Law, who played for Stringer at Iowa and was an assistant at Rutgers for many years.
