COMMUNITY East Oregonian Page 6A Friday, November 9, 2018 PENDLETON Veterans Day event salutes Korean War service East Oregonian A special tribute to Korean War and Korean service vet- erans will be held on Veterans Day at the Pendleton Conven- tion Center. According to George Mur- dock, Umatilla County commis- sion chair, the event is open to all veterans and their families as well as to the public. The doors open at 12:30 p.m. and the pro- gram begins at 1:30 p.m. The convention center is located at 1601 Westgate, Pendleton. Light refreshments will be served. All Korean War veterans and Korean service veterans are encouraged to call Melinda Slatt at 541-278-6204. They will receive special honors during the program. Rev. Mark Mullins of the Pendleton First Christian Church will provide the invo- cation and he also will sing the national anthem. Opening remarks will be provided by Murdock followed by reflec- tions on the war by Tom Tang- ney, who served in the U.S. Marine Corps in Korea. Pendle- ton mayor John Turner, who is a retired colonel from the Marine Corps, will present a tribute to the veterans. Each Korean era veteran or their widow will be provided with a congressional citation presented by Kathleen Cathey, aide to Sen. Ron Wyden; Gary Ward, commander of VFW post 922; and Sen. Bill Hansell. The program will conclude with a presentation of armed forces anthems and “Taps,” performed by Dave Chorazy, a retired U.S. Navy Band member. Murdock said the tribute is similar to the special event held several years ago to honor World War II veterans. Uma- tilla County Veterans Affairs is helping coordinate the pro- gram along with the Umatilla County Commissioners Office and VFW Post 922. For more information, call 541-278-6204 or visit www.co.umatilla.or.us.
