COMMUNITY East Oregonian Page 6A Thursday, November 8, 2018 PENDLETON Community theatre opens season with dark drama ‘Proof’ opens Nov. 8 with preview night East Oregonian The 2018-19 College Community Theatre sea- son opens with “Proof,” a drama by David Auburn. Director Colee Mayfield said the production features a “spark of emotion” and “is a poignant examination of life, love and loss.” The show is centered around Catherine, who ded- icated the last few years of her life to caring for her father, Robert, a once-re- nowned mathematician who suffers from debilitat- ing mental illness. Follow- ing Robert’s death, Cath- erine is set adrift trying to find herself. She’s forced to confront her questions, fears and relationships, especially with Claire, her sister, and Hal, a former student of her father. The production opens with a pay-what-you-can preview night Thursday, Nov. 8 at 7:30 p.m. in the Bob Clapp Theatre in Pio- neer Hall at Blue Mountain Community College, 2411 N.W. Carden Ave. Sub- sequent performances are Nov. 9-10 and 15-17 at 7:30 p.m., and matinée shows are Nov. 11 and 18 at 2 p.m. The characters are brought to life by a tal- ented cast, Mayfield said. Catherine is portrayed by Osa Jubilee Forrester, Rob- ert is played by Josh King and J.J. Hill plays Hal; all are CCT veterans. The role of Claire is portrayed by Casey Brown, who is mak- Photo contributed by J.J. Working on the show, Mayfield said, has been an exciting experience. It doesn’t shy away from top- ics that society sometimes has difficulty discussing — like death and mental illness. “The cast has been a joy to work with and watching them bring these characters to life has been an absolute treat,” she said. The production, May- field said, has a few inter- esting parallels with “The Glass Menagerie,” which served as her directo- rial debut this past spring. Both feature four-person casts and both focus heav- ily on one family and their relationships. “Both are dramas that look, unflinchingly, at the darkness in humanity, but also manage to find the humor in it,” she said. The production team includes King, who spear- heads the technical ele- ments, Janette Lemons as stage manager, Judy Mal- colm with costumes and Nicol Byram as the box office coordinator. In addi- tion, Mayfield said there are many other CCT members and community volunteers whose assistance is vital to the College Community Theatre’s success. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students (chil- dren under 3 will not be admitted). The production includes mature language and isn’t suitable for chil- dren. The CCT box office, located in Pioneer Hall, is open Monday through Fri- days from noon to 2 p.m. and prior to performances. Also, messages for call- backs can be left anytime at 541-278-5953. BRIEFLY Contra club invites people to kick up their heels PENDLETON — A dance featuring live music and a caller is planned at Pendleton Center for the Arts. A form of social dancing that one can attend without a partner, contra dancing has its origins in a range of folk traditions, including English country dance and Appa- lachian dancing. Dancers are paired up in long lines and follow the instructions of a caller. After the November event, the Pendle- ton Contra Dance Community will resume dances at the arts center on the second Sat- urday of each month from February through June 2019. Book club to discuss ‘The Tattooist of Auschwitz’ HERMISTON — An international best- seller by author Heather Morris is the topic of the upcoming Bookminders, the Hermis- ton Public Library book club. Participants will discuss “The Tattooist of Auschwitz” Tuesday, Nov. 13, at 1:30 p.m. at The Pheasant Bar & Grill, 149 E. Main St., Hermiston. The club meeting is free and people may arrive early for a no-host lunch. The book shares a tale of hope and cour- age. It’s based on interviews that were con- ducted with Holocaust survivor and Aus- chwitz-Birkenau tattooist Ludwig (Lale) Sokolov. In April 1942, Sokolov, a Slova- kian Jew, was transported to the concentra- tion camps. When his captors discovered that he spoke several languages, he was put to work as a tattooist, tasked with perma- nently marking his fellow prisoners. The book club, which is free and open to everyone, meets the second Tuesday of each month. A limited number of copies of “The Tattooist of Auschwitz” are available at the library.
