TIMBERS ONE LEG UP Timbers go up 2-1 after first leg of semifinal with Sounders By ANNE M. PETERSON AP Sports Writer P ORTLAND — The Port- land Timbers did what they needed to do at home for the first go-round against the rival Seat- tle Sounders in the MLS playoffs. Sebastian Blanco put the Tim- bers in front with a goal in the 29th minute and Portland hung on over a tense second half to go up 2-1 in the opening leg of their Western Conference semifinal against the Sounders on Sunday. The second leg is set for Thurs- day night in Seattle. “We won, that’s the important thing,” Timbers coach Giovanni Savarese said. “We’ll think about everything else later. We needed a win today and found the win that we needed.” Seattle was hurt by a pair of key injuries to starters Cristian Roldan and Chad Marshall in the opening half that could impact the second leg. “Obviously it wasn’t the result that we wanted, but at the end of the day we got a road goal, so that always helps. It’s something to put in your pocket for later. But we understand (we have to) win the game on Thurs- day. Those are the facts,” Sounders coach Brian Schmetzer said. Seattle, the second seed in the West, had avoided a knockout round game this week after wrap- ping up the regular season with a 2-1 victory over the San Jose Earthquakes. The win, secured on Raul Ruidiaz’s stoppage-time goal, combined with Colorado’s Deci- sion Day victory over FC Dallas, slid the Sounders into second place in the standings for the opening round bye. The Sounders won 14 of their final 16 regular-season games in another remarkable second-half surge under Schmetzer. Fifth-seeded Portland lost its final regular-season match against the Whitecaps and had the daunt- ing task of facing FC Dallas on the road in the knockout stage. Prep volleyball Mariota recovers, Titans top Cowboys TigerScots take sixth at 2A state tournament East Oregonian By SCHUYLER DIXON AP Pro Football Writer ARLINGTON, Texas — Mar- cus Mariota threw two touchdown passes and ran for another score after fumbling on Tennessee’s first two possessions, and the Titans spoiled Amari Cooper’s Dallas debut with a 28-14 victory over the Cowboys on Monday night. Kevin Byard sparked the slug- gish Titans with an end-zone inter- ception of Dak Prescott and cele- brated T.O.-style. The Tennessee safety sprinted to midfield and stood on the Cowboys’ star logo while spreading his arms, just as Terrell Owens did 18 years ago at a pair of goals from Diego Valeri, despite playing for much of the second half a man down. The victory set up the Cascadia semifinal between the two teams, who last met in the 2013 confer- ence finals with Portland winning 5-3 on aggregate. Ruidiaz scored in the 10th min- ute to give the Sounders the early lead. Roldan moved the ball up the left side and passed it off to Vic- tor Rodriguez, who served it into Ruidiaz out in front of the goal. Ruidiaz tucked his shot into the left side of the net out of Jeff Atti- nella’s reach. It was his 11th goal this season. The Sounders went into the match 12-0-0 in MLS playoff games when they scored first. The Heppner boys cross-country team, in its first year running at the 2A/1A state meet, returned home with a third-place trophy. The Mustangs, led by senior Hunter Nichols, fin- ished with 102 points Sat- urday, one point back of runner-up St. Stephen’s Academy at Lane Commu- nity College in Eugene. Union, behind Tim Ste- ven’s first-place finish, won the team title with 44 points. Stevens turned in a time of 15 minutes, 33 seconds. Nichols finished third on the day with a time of 16:30 over the 5,000-meter course. He was eighth last year, and 15th as a sophomore. The rest of the Mustangs ran at the state meet for the first time. Hayden Qualls finished 16th (17:37), Trevor Antonucci was 35th (18:19), Colt Parker 37th (18:22), Leo Waite 44th (18:42), Tyson Vawser 45th (18:42), and Christian Dubry 68th (19:24). The Cowboys looked like the team headed for a blowout win, but led just 7-0 after Mariota’s early miscues because of Brett Maher’s missed 38-yard field goal and Prescott’s ill-advised throw into double coverage.
