Boston Red Sox’s Steve Pearce celebrates his sec-
ond home run during the eighth inning in Game 5 of
the World Series on Sunday.
RED SOX: Pearce is
World Series MVP
Continued from 1B
Houston Astros in the
playoffs. Cora became the
first manager from Puerto
Rico to win a title and just
the fifth rookie manager
overall.
Pearce, the Series MVP,
hit a two-run homer on
Clayton Kershaw’s sixth
pitch. Solo homers by
Mookie Betts in the sixth
inning and J.D. Martinez
in the seventh quieted the
crowd, and Pearce added a
solo drive off Pedro Baez
in the eighth.
“We are a bunch of
grinders,” Pearce said,
“and this is exactly where
we knew we were going
to be.”
Pearce, a June acqui-
sition from Toronto, had
three homers and seven
RBIs in the final two
games of the Series.
After losing to Houston
in Game 7 last year by the
same 5-1 score, the Dodg-
ers became the first team
ousted on its home field in
consecutive World Series
since the New York Giants
by the New York Yankees
at the Polo Grounds in
1936 and ’37.
Los Angeles is still
looking for its first cham-
pionship since 1988.
“Ran up against a very
good ballclub. And just a
little bit too much for us,”
Dodgers manager Dave
Roberts said.
Boston won its ninth
title, tying the Athletics
for third-most behind the
Yankees (27) and Cardi-
nals (11). All that stood
between the Red Sox and
a sweep was an 18-inning
loss in Game 3, the lon-
gest World Series game
ever.
Saturday’s Walla Walla
districts meet hosted the Bull-
dogs and saw strong perfor-
mances from their top runners.
The top two teams and top
14 runners would go on to
qualify for state, and although
Hermiston did not make the
cut, coach Troy Blackburn
sees a “bright future” for all of
his runners.
The Hermiston girls fin-
ished fifth, with Cydney San-
chez leading the pack, plac-
ing 18th. Ellie Ernst was right
behind her at 21st, and Alexia
Serna finished third for the
Bulldogs at 26th.
“These three girls have
been running well all sea-
son,” Blackburn said. “I am so
proud of them, and I look for-
ward to seeing them get faster
and faster.”
Freddy Mendoza led the
boys, clocking in at 16:53, and
finishing 23rd. Greg Anderson
was less than a minute behind
Mendoza, finishing at 17:15.
Freshman Jackson Shaver ran
a PR of of 17:53 — the Bull-
dogs’ third-fastest runner for
the meet.

UMATILLA 2, NYSSA
0 — A home shutout against
Nyssa closed league play for
the Umatilla Vikings on Sat-
urday afternoon.
Forward Alexis Ruiz put
the team on the scoreboard in
the first half, and midfielder
Jose Alanis scored in the sec-
ond to seal the victory.
“It was a really tight game
in the first half,” said coach
Pedro Ortiz. “We improved a
lot in the second — we had
more shots-on-goal, had bet-
ter passing, and found open-
ings in their defense.”
The Vikings (7-5-1, 5-2)
will head into playoffs on
Tuesday.
Girls Soccer
UMATILLA 1, NYSSA
0 — The Vikings closed out
their season with a home vic-
tory over Nyssa on Saturday.
Junior forward Lizzy
Burres led the team with
Umatilla’s only goal, scor-
ing during the first half of the
game.
“We possessed well and
defended well, but got a lit-
tle lazy in the second half,”
said coach Tim Lee. “Overall,
it was a pretty decent perfor-
mance and a good way to end
the season.
Umatilla finished the year
off with a 4-8 overall record
and 2-3 in the 3A/2A/1A Spe-
cial District 6.

WESTON-MCEWEN 3,
REGIS 0 — Weston-McE-

a Saturday playoff match, tak-
ing their visiting opponents in
three, 25-9, 25-14, and 25-18.
“We played very well
today,” said TigerScots coach
Shawn White. “All of our
players contributed and exe-
cuted great.”
Bryce Thul led her team
with eight digs, 17 assists, and
eight kills. Ellie Scheibner
recorded 14 total assists and
two blocks. Hailey Weaver
