NATION/WORLD East Oregonian Page 6A Wednesday, October 24, 2018 U.S. revokes visas of Saudis implicated in killing of writer By MATTHEW LEE AND SUSANNAH GEORGE Associated Press WASHINGTON — The Trump administration revoked the visas Tues- day of some Saudi officials implicated in the killing of writer Jamal Khashoggi in its first punitive measure against its longtime Middle East partner, as President Donald Trump denounced the kingdom for one of the “worst cover-ups in the his- tory of cover-ups.” Shortly after Trump made the comment, Secre- tary of State Mike Pompeo said the administration was moving to revoke the visas of Saudi government and intelligence agents sus- pected of involvement in the death of Khashoggi. Visa records are confi- dential and Pompeo was not more specific about who the revocations would affect, but the State Depart- ment later said 21 “Saudi suspects” would have visas revoked or would be declared ineligible to enter the U.S. “These penalties will not be the last word on this mat- ter,” Pompeo told reporters at the State Department. The administration “will con- tinue to hold those responsi- ble accountable. We’re mak- ing very clear that the United States does not tolerate this kind of ruthless action to silence Mr. Khashoggi, a journalist, with violence,” he said. “Neither the presi- dent or I am happy with this situation.” Members of Congress have demanded that sanc- tions be imposed on Saudi Arabia over the killing of Khashoggi, a U.S. resident and Washington Post con- tributor who disappeared after entering the Saudi con- sulate in Istanbul, Turkey, on Oct. 2. Turkish authorities say Khashoggi was the vic- tim of a pre-planned assassi- nation operation while Saudi officials have conceded that he died but that his killing occurred accidentally while they were trying to convince him to return home. Saudi officials murdered Khashoggi in their Istanbul consulate after plotting his death for days, Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said, contradicting Saudi Arabia’s explanation that the writer was accidentally killed. stressed the strategic impor- tance of the U.S.-Saudi relationship. “We continue to view as achievable the twin imper- ative of protecting Amer- ica and holding accountable those responsible for the killing of Mr. Khashoggi,” Pompeo said. “We want to make sure that everyone understands that the United States doesn’t believe that this killing of Jamal Khashoggi was anything other than a horrific act and we hope that we can work together both with Congress and our allies to hold those responsible accountable.” In his remarks to report- ers at the White House, Trump derided the initial Saudi denial of any wrong- doing and efforts to con- ceal what happened to Khashoggi. “They had a very bad original concept,” Trump said. “It was carried out poorly and the cover-up was one of the worst cover-ups in the history of cover-ups. Somebody really messed up and they had the worst cov- er-up ever.” Saudi Arabia has claimed Khashoggi, who lived in self-imposed exile in the U.S. and wrote critically about Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, died accidentally in a brawl at the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul on Oct. 2. But Turkish officials say a 15-men team tortured, killed and dismembered the writer and say Saudi offi- cials had planned the killing for days. Bomb found at philanthropist George Soros’ suburban home BEDFORD, N.Y. (AP) — A bomb was found in a mail- box at the suburban New York compound of George Soros, the liberal billionaire philanthropist who has been the target of right-wing con- spiracy theorists, authorities said Tuesday. Federal investigators were reviewing surveillance video to determine whether the package had been sent through the mail or deliv- ered some other way, offi- cials said, adding it was also not clear if the parcel was addressed to Soros. A security officer at the compound about 50 miles north of Manhat- tan became suspicious of the package Monday after- noon and placed it in a wooded area before alert- ing the FBI and the Bureau of Alco- hol, Tobacco, Fire- arms and Explo- sives, authorities said. Agents came out and safely det- Soros onated the device, which a federal law enforce- ment official said contained explosive powder. “It was not a hoax device,” said the official, who spoke to The Associ- ated Press on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the investigation. Another federal official who also spoke on condition of anonymity said the device resem- bled a pipe bomb and was inside a package placed in a mailbox out- side the gates of the compound. It was opened in a secure loca- tion just inside the gates, nowhere near Soros’ quarters, the official said. The Bedford Police Department said the FBI’s terrorism task force was investigating. The FBI’s New York field office said on Twitter that there was “no threat to public safety” but did not respond to messages seeking comment. A message emailed to Soros’ foundation wasn’t immediately returned. Soros, who made his for- tune in hedge funds, fre- quently donates to liberal causes. Recently, conserva- tive critics have accused him without evidence of secretly financing the caravan of Central American migrants making their way toward the U.S. Soros, who is Jewish, has also been the target of anti-Semitic smears. Some have falsely accused him of being a Nazi collaborator during World War II, when he was a child in Hungary.
