Man sentenced to
prison, deportation
for drug conviction
MEDFORD (AP) — A
man who helped hold a vic-
tim for ransom in an attempt
to collect on a six-figure mari-
juana deal has been sentenced
to prison and deportation for a
second time in federal court.
The Mail Tribune reports
that 40-year-old Adrian Rive-
ra-Espinosa was sentenced
Thursday in U.S. District
Court after two California
men used his home to attempt
to collect on a $200,000 mar-
ijuana debt by luring the vic-
tim there and threatening the
victim with dismemberment.
Rivera-Espinosa already
had pleaded guilty to a fel-
ony count of coercion in state
court in the case.
He entered the U.S. legally
in 1996 but was lost his res-
idency in 2002 after he was
convicted of trafficking
cocaine.
He returned illegally in
2009.
Defendant lunges
for officer’s gun in
Oregon courtroom
NEWPORT (AP) — Offi-
cials with the Lincoln County
Sheriff’s Office say a man
tried to grab a police officer’s
gun in a Newport courtroom
this week and that a year-old
federal appeals decision con-
tributed to the near-disaster.
The Oregonian/Oregon-
Live reports a judge had
denied a request by deputies
to restrain 27-year-old Scott
Lemmon in court Wednesday.
In a scuffle caught on
courtroom video, a man iden-
tified by authorities as Lem-
mon stands up and lunges
for a gun worn by a Newport
police officer sitting at the
counsel table nearby.
The officer turned away
and a courthouse deputy tack-
led Lemmon to the floor.
Authorities say this is the
first case of a Lincoln County
defendant grabbing for a
gun since the 9th U.S. Cir-
cuit Court of Appeals ruled
in 2017 to allow judges to
decide if defendants are
restrained when escorted into
the courtroom.
Police identify man
killed by officer at
Portland motel
PORTLAND (AP) —
Authorities have identified
the Oregon man killed by
police at a motel in southeast
Portland.
KATU-TV reports police
say 30-year-old Samuel Rice
was shot by an officer after
he held a woman hostage at
the Del Rancho Motel on
Wednesday.
The state medical exam-
iner determined that Rice died
from the gunshot wound.
The officer was placed
on paid administrative leave,
which is standard procedure
in a police shooting.
No one else was hurt
during the encounter.
Police say they had taken
Rice to hospitals several times
in the past for mental health
treatment. The Behavioral
Health Unit had also tried
multiple times to connect him
to services.
Filmore Street reported the theft of a
weapon.
12:08 p.m. - A 911 caller at Victory
Square Park, 150 S.W. 10th St., Hermiston,
reported he was “having problems” with a
female harassing him.
2:19 p.m. - The Umatilla County Sheriff’s
Office took a report for identity theft.
3:04 p.m. - A car struck and injured a calf
at West Columbia Lane and Craig Road,
Hermiston, and a caller asked to speak to
an officer about the incident.
6 p.m. - A caller reported harvest drivers
sped through the area of County Line Road,
Morrow County, and one did not stop for a
school bus that extended its stop sign. The
sheriff’s office plans to run extra patrols
there for a week.
7:45 p.m. - Hermiston police received
a 911 report of a couple fighting at the
Harkenrider Senior Center, 255 N.E.
Second St.
