Pendleton wins in
homecoming game

Not even the rain over the
Round-Up arena could dampen
Pendleton’s streak.
The Bucks celebrated Senior
and Homecoming Night by wel-
coming La Salle Prep and send-
ing them home with a 62-14 loss.
Pendleton wasted no time tak-
ing the lead. Quarterback Trent
Sorey rushed 27 yards to put his
team ahead 6-0 just 20 seconds
into the game. Later on in the first
quarter, he handed the ball off to
wide receiver Blake Davis who
carried it 20 yards, which set up
an easy 10-yard pass from Sorey
to running back Aiden Patterson
for another touchdown on the
next play.
La Salle responded with their
first of two scores on the night:
Falcons quarterback Ethan Edg-
erly rushed 43 yards in three
downs to put his team on the
scoreboard.
The first quarter closed out
after Bucks running back Shawn
Yeager scored a rushing touch-
down, leaving his team ahead
21-7.
Less than two minutes into the
second quarter, the Bucks scored
again as Patterson ran the ball
33 yards for another touchdown.

Pendleton quarterback Trent Sorey scrambles out of the pocket pursued by La Salle’s Ryan Bjor-
vik in the Bucks’ 62-14 win over the Falcons on Friday in Pendleton.
During their next possession,
Sorey faked a handoff to Yeager
and carried the ball 19 yards for
another score, 35-7.
“We ran a deadly read option
tonight,” Sorey said of the team’s
offensive strategy.
As the game progressed con-
ditions on the field worsened
because of the rain. In the second
quarter, Patterson rushed the ball
for 20 yards before slipping on
the wet grass and colliding into
Falcons running back Brandon
Lopez-Elizalde, who suffered a
leg injury and was assisted off the
field.

The Hermiston Bulldogs were
concerned about Chiawana’s
defense and AJ Vongphachanh
going into Friday’s Mid-Columbia
Conference showdown.
They were right to be worried.
Vongphachanh finished with
a handful tackles and a quarter-
back sack, a fumble recovery and
a 5-yard interception for a touch-
down. Oh, and he also ran the ball
for a 2-point conversion as the
Riverhawks got back on the win-
ning track with a 34-10 victory
over the Bulldogs at Edgar Brown
Stadium in Pasco.
“Too many mistakes,” Herm-
iston coach David Faaeteete said.
“We turned the ball over twice on
special teams and got down 21-7.
Hats off to Chiawana, they played
a good game and they beat us
soundly.”
The Riverhawks (4-2, 4-1
Mid-Columbia) avoided losing
three games in a row with the win,
and caused even more of a logjam
in the standings.
“The defense played really well
up front,” Chiawana coach Steve
Graff said. “When we had chances
on offense, we got points. Some of
the young kids are growing up and
making better decisions, and that
helps.”
Hermiston (4-2) wasted no time
in finding the end zone first Friday
night, as Wyatt Noland bulled his
way over the goal line from 1 yard
out just 3:54 into the game. Noland
finished with 82 yards rushing.
Chiawana punted on its first
possession, then forced Hermis-
ton to do the same. A poor snap
to punter Juan Carlos Navar-
rete resulted in a fumble that was
recovered by Vongphachanh at the
Bulldogs’ 22.

Kershaw spectacular on mound in Game 2 win for Dodgers
LOS ANGELES (AP)
— Clayton Kershaw tossed
eight innings of two-hit
ball in the Dodgers’ second
straight playoff shutout, and
Manny Machado slugged a
two-run homer as Los Ange-
les beat the Atlanta Braves
3-0 on Friday night for a 2-0
lead in their NL Division
Series.
The Dodgers used a
nearly identical formula to
win 6-0 in Game 1 behind
Hyun-Jin Ryu, who allowed
only four two-out singles
over seven innings, and
home runs by Joc Pederson,
Max Muncy and Enrique
Hernandez.
Kershaw was even bet-
ter. The left-hander struck
out three and walked none in
remaining unbeaten against
Atlanta throughout his illus-
trious career.

Braves will be looking to

postseason.
Kershaw got bypassed as
the Game 1 starter in favor
of Ryu after the three-time
NL Cy Young Award win-
ner had started eight of the
Dodgers’ past 10 postsea-
son openers. Manager Dave
Roberts said it was done to
give both Ryu and Kershaw
five days of rest between
starts.
One more victory would
put Los Angeles in the NL
Championship Series for
the third straight year. The
Dodgers beat the Cubs in the
NLCS last season and lost to
them in that round in 2016.
Kershaw ran out to the
mound as though he was
going to pitch the ninth,
bringing cheers from the
sellout crowd of 54,452.
But when Roberts went out
to pull Kershaw after 85
pitches, fans booed.
Kenley Jansen gave up
a one-out single to Ronald
Acuna Jr. before earning the
save.
Machado hit a two-run
shot on a 3-0 pitch from Ani-
bal Sanchez with two outs in
the first. Joc Pederson dou-
bled leading off.
Yasmani Grandal hom-
ered on an 0-2 pitch from
Sanchez leading off the fifth
to make it 3-0.
Acuna doubled to deep
left-center on Kershaw’s
first pitch. He became the
Braves’ first runner to reach
third base in the series on
Johan Camargo’s groundout
to Kershaw.

These green can get away from you
if you’re not paying attention.”
