Calendar contest draws on Oregon’s bounty

A pair of local students
were among the 13 winners
of the Oregon Agriculture in
the Classroom Foundation
annual calendar art contest.
Elizabeth Finch of Hep-
pner Elementary School and
Andrew Kubishta of Helix
Elementary School, who
are both entering fifth grade,
were recognized during an
Aug. 26 reception at the
Oregon State Fair in Salem.
The artwork of the two local
winners were among more
than 2,000 entries submitted
in the statewide contest.
With more than 200 agri-
culture-related commodities
across the state, students had
a wide variety of subjects
to choose from. In addi-
tion to having their artwork
included in the calender,
the winners also received a
$50 award and a certificate.
The artwork is on display
through Monday at the fair-
grounds in Salem.
Although unable to attend
the reception, Kubishta was
honored for his entry depict-
ing luscious blueberries.
Using crayon, pencil and
colored pencils, his artwork
also features bold and color-
ful lettering with the words
“Oregon Grown.”
Drawing on her creativ-
ity and familiar sites in Mor-
row County, Finch’s submis-
sion features a horse herding
cattle.
“I chose the scene
because it is one of the com-
modities of Heppner,” she
said. “A lot of people have
cattle.”
Sue
Gibbs,
Finch’s
teacher, also attended the
reception. This was the first
year she worked with stu-
dents to enter the contest.
The activity, Gibbs said,

“I enjoy using hands-on
materials and the flexibility
it gives me to teach the stan-
dards,” she said. “The stu-
dents love the activities and
learn so much about agricul-
ture in our state.”
The timing of the calen-
dar contest, Gibbs said, was
perfect because students
were able to use what they
learned over the course of
the year to create an entry.

executive director, agreed
that the calendar contest is a
great project for both teach-
ers and students.
“It gives them an oppor-
tunity to teach and discuss
about the bounty and beauty
of Oregon agriculture and
incorporate art in their class-
rooms,” she said.

A Hermiston man who
has several charges of sex
abuse and rape pending was
arrested Tuesday, but posted
bail the same day. Jose Gua-
dalupe Cancino Sanguino,
36, was arrested by the Uma-
tilla County Sheriff’s Office
on a warrant for a case that’s
being handled by the Herm-
iston Police Department.
Hermiston Police Chief
Jason Edmiston said the
arrest was related to cases
that started in December
2017 and May 2018. But
he said on Wednesday that
they have recently become
aware of at least one new
victim, adding that a detec-
tive is currently working on
the case.
Edmiston said Sanguino
was initially arrested in
December 2017 and lodged
in the jail. When he was out
on bail, another victim came
forward. Edmiston said that
victim is from out of the
area, so the department had
to work with another agency
on that case.
He said both victims are
Oregon State Police
searched for a driver
on Wednesday who hit
another vehicle nearly
head-on, drove away from
the scene and then aban-
doned the vehicle and ran
away on foot.
The suspect, who police
have not named, was driv-
ing a silver Suzuki Side-
kick north on Diagonal
Road around 10:30 a.m.
The driver then turned left
in front of a Cadillac Esca-
lade that was traveling
south on Diagonal Road,
into a gravel area near the
Short Stop Circle K park-
ing lot.
The Suzuki hit the
Cadillac, but the driver
did not stop, and took off
through the gravel area,
onto Punkin Center Road.
The driver left the vehi-
cle by the side of a field on
Punkin Center about half a
mile from the scene of the
wreck.

Oregon agriculture. Copies
of the 2018-19 school-year
calendar are free for teach-

Hermiston man arrested for rape, posts bail

name.
Oregon State Police
trooper Trish Draze said
witnesses described the
suspect as a male dressed
in all black spotted running
from the vehicle and hid-
ing in a tree. Draze turned
off the ignition switch on
the vehicle, which the sus-
pect had left running.
Draze said she did not
know if there was more
than one person in the sus-
pect car. She said there
were two people in the
Cadillac, both of whom
were complaining of
injuries.
