COMMUNITY East Oregonian Page 6A Tuesday, August 7, 2018 HERMISTON Parade float springs into foster family fundraiser By TAMMY MALGESINI East Oregonian People who enjoy horsing around are encouraged to buy a raffle ticket for a chance to win a rocking horse created with a heavy-duty truck spring. Sales from tickets will benefit the Department of Human Services Child Welfare program’s foster parent and child fund. It will provide additional money that’s used for special events for local foster parents and foster kids, said Mar- vin Hamilton, a DHS certifier. “I thought adults would love one of these things,” Hamilton said. “It’s very sturdy and stable. I bounced around pretty good on it during the fair parade.” Hamilton made it with assistance from Jason Bremner, for the DHS float during the Umatilla County Fair parade. Hamil- ton named the creation Brando, which is painted to look like an Appaloosa. Created with metal work and fabrica- tion, the rocking horse is approximately 4 feet long. The spring was donated by Hagerman Inc. in Umatilla. Raffle tickets are $20 each and can be purchased by asking for a DHS certifier at offices in Hermiston, Pendleton and Board- man. In addition, people can see Brando by stopping by the department’s fair booth this week at Eastern Oregon Trade and Event Center, 1705 E. Airport Road, Hermiston. Tickets also will be available for purchase in Booth 32 in EOTEC’s main building. Photo contributed by Marvin Hamilton Brando, a heavy-duty rocking horse created for the DHS Child Welfare parade float, will be raffled off to benefit the organization’s foster parent and child fund. Brando, Hamilton said, also will make an appearance during the Main Street Cowboys Dress Up Parade, which is Sat- urday, Sept. 8 at 10 a.m. in downtown Pendleton. The drawing will be a week after that, he said. DHS Child Welfare, Hamilton said, is looking at hosting a winter event that offers foster families an opportunity to get out of the house and have fun. They envision providing food and bouncy houses, face painting, games and other indoor fun to help alleviate cabin fever.
