Gonzalez pitches seven
shutout innings as Mariners
blank Angels 3-0

ANAHEIM, Calif. — Marco Gonza-
lez pitched seven sharp innings, David
Freitas hit his first major league home run
and the Seattle Mariners defeated the Los
Angeles Angels 3-0 on Wednesday night.
Gonzalez (10-5), who retired his first
10 batters, gave up just two hits and
struck out four without issuing a walk. He
not only earned his seventh victory since
May 17, he became the 10th pitcher in
Mariners history to reach 10 wins before
the All-Star break.
Freitas, who had been hitless in seven
at-bats since being recalled July 5, went
deep in the third against starter Jaime
Barria. It was Freitas’ 32nd career game,
26 of which have been with the Mariners.
Barria (5-6) gave up three runs and
five hits in five-plus innings with five
strikeouts and no walks. The right-hander
has lost his last five decisions, including
the past two to the Mariners.
The Mariners have won 11 of 15
games and 18 of their last 29. They also
improved to 27-18 on the road.
Seattle shortstop Jean Segura, who
found out Wednesday he was added to
the American League All-Star team as the
result of online balloting, reached base
twice. He doubled and was hit by a pitch
on the left arm.
The Angels did not have a baserunner
until the fourth inning when Andrelton
Simmons hit a comebacker off Gonza-
lez’s left leg for a single. Mike Trout fol-
lowed with a single to center before Gon-
zalez retired his next 11 batters.
Alex Colome pitched the eighth inning
for the Mariners, and All-Star closer
Edwin Diaz worked a perfect ninth for his
major league-leading 36th save.

It been a successful summer
for the Oregon Lightning softball
team.
The 16U travel team, com-
prised mostly of girls from Pendle-
ton and La Grande, won three con-
secutive tournaments from June 9
to July 1. The summer season cul-
minated this past weekend as the
team went a perfect 5-0 to win the
USA Softball 2018 Oregon 16U
state championship at Wallace
Marine Park in Salem.
State championships have
become the norm this season for
the group of girls, as eight of the
10 team members were on either
Pendleton or La Grande’s OSAA
state championship-winning teams
in the spring. Those girls include
Pendleton’s Carissa Cooley, Chel-
sea Farrow, Sami Spriet and Ellie
Lankford as well as La Grande’s
Allie Brock, Kara Gooderham,
Jayce Seavert, and Jaiden Hafer.
The Lightning cruised through
the bracket over the weekend,
winning its first four games by a
combined score of 45-4 to reach
the championship game. There,
the Lightning defeated the Silver
Bullets 8-0 to claim the trophy.

In that game, Hafer swung the
biggest bat as she went 2-for-3
with a double and a home run to
drive in three runs. After her, both
Bailey LeBreton — from The
Dalles — and Spriet had two hits
as well.
For the weekend, Cooley had
the best performance at the plate
of the Pendleton products, going
8-for-18 (.444) with two doubles,
seven runs and four RBI. Katie
Bradt was 7-for-14 (.500) with
three RBI, Spriet 6-for-14 (.428)
with five runs and three RBI, Far-
row 5-for-14 (.357) with four
RBI and three runs and Lankford
scored twice.
The Lightning finish the sum-
mer season 31-2-2 overall, but will
keep playing in two national tour-
naments later this month.
The Pendleton 12U Little
League Softball All-Stars now
sit just one win away from a state
championship.
The All-Stars won their sixth
straight game at the 12U state
tournament in Baker City on
Wednesday, thumping Klam-
ath Falls 18-3 in the semifinals
to reach the championship game.
The win came on the heels of
Pendleton’s 14-2 win over the
same Klamath Falls team to fin-
ish up pool play on Tuesday.
Klamath Falls scored the first
run of the game in the bottom
of the first inning when Pend-
leton pitcher Melanie Boatman
walked the bases loaded and then
let a run in with a passed ball. But
Pendleton answered back with a
four-run top of the second inning
when Nessa Neveau scored on
a wild pitch, Boatman scored
on an error, Avery Krigbaum on
a passed ball and Lea Wilson
on a RBI single from Madaline
Schumacher.
Pendleton and Klamath Falls
then each scored a run in the third
to make the score 5-3 in favor of
Pendleton. However in the fourth
inning, Pendleton blew the doors
off the game as 18 batters stepped
to the plate in the inning and 13 of
them scored. Pendleton recorded
five hits in the frame, worked
three walks and had the help of
six Klamath Falls errors.
Schumacher was Pendleton’s
leading hitter, going 2-for-3 with
a double, three RBI and a run
scored and Krigbaum was 1-for-4
with a double, two RBI and two
runs. Neveau scored a team-best
three runs while Bailey Moore,
Lanie Burke, Sammantha Wilks
and Wilson each scored two runs.
Boatman pitched all four
innings for Pendleton, allow-
ing three hits, three runs and five
walks with six strikeouts.
Pendleton plays for the cham-
pionship at 4 p.m. Thursday
at the Baker Sports Complex
against Beaumont Little League,
which defeated Redmond 21-1
in the other semifinal. Pendleton
defeated Beaumont 6-2 on Day 1
of the tournament on Saturday.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — A
group of former Louisville men’s
basketball players have filed a
lawsuit against the NCAA over
the organization’s vacation of the
Cardinals’ 2013 national cham-
pionship and 2012 Final Four.
John Morgan, one of several
attorneys representing former
Cardinals captain Luke Han-
cock, the 2013 Final Four Most
Outstanding Player, and four
teammates from that title team,
said a lawsuit had been filed and
described the NCAA as “a mor-
ally bankrupt organization” that
exploits student-athletes during
a Wednesday news conference.
The suit filed Wednesday in
Jefferson County Circuit Court
does not specify monetary dam-
ages. It states the NCAA cast
the plaintiffs in a false light and
seeks declaration that it wrong-
fully vacated the plaintiffs’ wins,
honors and awards.
