Pendleton softball All-Stars on a roll at state tourney
Pendleton 12U team
perfect in four games
East Oregonian
The Pendleton 12U Little
League softball All-Stars have
put together a tremendous run at
the 2018 state tournament so far
in Baker City, as the team aims
for its third consecutive state
championship.
The tournament began on Sat-
urday and since the start Pend-
leton has played four games and
won every one. Pendleton opened
with a 6-2 win over Beaumont on
Saturday, then defeated Taborville
20-10 on Sunday, and took care of
Redmond 17-3 and West Valley
8-2 on Monday.
Pendleton’s dominance came
from a lineup that produced 45
hits and worked 23 walks to score
its 51 total runs so far, while also
capitalizing on 26 errors from its
opponents.
Melanie Boatman and Mad-
aline Schumacher have a team-
best seven hits apiece through four
games, with Schumacher doubling
twice, scoring nine runs and driv-
ing in five runs and Boatman scor-
ing nine runs and driving in three
runs.
Behind those two, Avery Krig-
baum has six hits, nine runs and
five RBI, Nessa Neveau has five
hits with a double and four RBI,
Lea Wilson has four hits with
seven runs and three RBI, and Lily
Brooks has four hits with two runs
and three RBI.
Lanie Burke, Boatman, Schum-
acher and Brooks have all spent
time in the pitcher’s circle, with
Boatman having the best perfor-
mance so far. In two appearances,
Boatman has struck out 13 bat-
ters and allowed only three hits,
two runs and walked three in nine
innings.
Pendleton will next play Klam-
ath Falls on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
before the four-team bracket play
starts on Wednesday.

tal-sized All-Star Game.
Baseball unveiled the rosters for its
midsummer showcase Sunday night,
featuring an imposing AL lineup and
Harper starting at his home ballpark in
Washington.
Reigning AL MVP Jose Altuve was
one of five All-Stars from the World
Series champion Houston Astros, match-
ing the Boston Red Sox and Cleveland
Indians for most in the majors. The New
York Yankees and Atlanta Braves each
had four, including rookie Gleyber Tor-
res from the Bronx Bombers and fellow
second baseman Ozzie Albies from the
surprising Braves.
“It’s fun. You’re playing but you’re
looking around because you’re playing
with all those big boys out there,” said
Altuve, who made the AL team for the
sixth time.

Los Angeles Angels’ Mike Trout
earned his seventh All-Star selection.
Torres is on the disabled list with a
hip injury and unlikely to participate.
While he and Albies are just 21 years
old, the list of 25 first-time All-Stars also
includes thirty-something surprises like
Boston first baseman Mitch Moreland,
Texas Rangers slugger Shin-Soo Choo
and Atlanta outfielder Nick Markakis.

“It’s something that I didn’t know it
would ever be quite possible,” Moreland
said. “I’m definitely excited about the
opportunity and appreciative of having
that opportunity.”
Trout is working on perhaps the best
season of his stellar career with the Los
Angeles Angels. Judge has 25 homers
and 58 RBIs for the Yankees, and Betts is
batting .342 with 22 homers for the major
league-leading Red Sox.
But that’s just the beginning for the
AL, which has won five All-Star Games
in a row and 17 of the last 21.
Altuve led the fan balloting with 4.8
million votes. Baltimore Orioles short-
stop Manny Machado will make the short
trip down to D.C. for the July 17 game
with speculation increasing about his
future ahead of the trade deadline.
Chicago White Sox first baseman Jose
Abreu, Cleveland Indians third baseman
Jose Ramirez, Red Sox designated hit-
ter J.D. Martinez and Tampa Bay Rays
catcher Wilson Ramos round out the
AL’s starting lineup.
“The best part is being with all the
guys. You’re on the biggest stage with
the best,” said Trout, who was selected
for the seventh straight year — tying
Boston ace Chris Sale for the longest
active streak.
Harper was voted a starter for the
fourth consecutive year. The slug-
LAS VEGAS — Was Damian Lillard
upset the Portland Trail Blazers let good
friend and treasured teammate Ed Davis
walk? No question.
Did he want his team’s young roster
to grow older and more battle-tested this
offseason? Yes.
But does he want to leave the only
franchise he’s ever played for? Hardly.
The three-time All-Star point guard,
speaking publicly for the first time this
summer, squashed rumors of his unhap-
piness and shot down reports he’s angling
to leave Rip City for the Los Angeles
Lakers or any other franchise.
“I’m not unhappy,” Lillard said Sun-
day. “I love where I live. I love the orga-
nization. I love our coaching staff. I love
where I am.”
Lillard spoke to reporters after watch-
ing the Blazers’ NBA Summer League
game in Las Vegas, where he has been
working out in preparation for a USA
Basketball minicamp, and addressed a
wide range of topics, including Davis’
free agent exodus, the Blazers’ off-
season moves and the loaded Western
Conference.
He admitted to being upset the Blaz-
ers let Davis go. Not only did Davis want
to stay in Portland, but Lillard had lob-
bied for it to happen, saying he hoped the
