Girl with fireworks started
wildfire in Jackson County
PORTLAND (AP) —
A 14-year-old girl play-
ing with fireworks started a
small wildfire that burned
a vacant house, other struc-
tures and vehicles in south-
ern Oregon, officials said
Friday.
No
injuries
were
reported in Thursday’s
blaze in the community of
White City, state Depart-
ment of Forestry spokes-
woman Melissa Rae Cano
said.
In addition to the house,
the flames burned a bus,
two recreational vehicles,
four outbuildings and six
boats.
Cano said fire crews
contained the fast-mov-
ing blaze that began in a
backyard and scorched 115
acres.
The Jackson County
District Attorney’s Office
will review the case to
determine whether to file
criminal charges.
Homeowner
Marie
Poppa told the Mail Tri-
bune newspaper that her
son called to report flames
racing toward their house.
She hurried home to
find a team of friends and
family protecting the home
with a bulldozer and gar-
den hoses. The fire stopped
at her backyard fence.
“This is a miracle,”
Poppa said. “This should
not be here right now. I’m
still wrapping my head
around it.”
Poppa’s husband, Brian
Poppa, said if he had not
mowed the six-acre prop-
erty last week, the house
would have probably been
destroyed.
“As it was, my dad said
the flames were like, 10,
12 feet high,” Brian Poppa
said.
Meanwhile, investiga-
tors in Springfield, Oregon,
are investigating whether
fireworks are to blame for
a fire that killed a 75-year-
old woman late Thursday.
The fire burned a house
and neighboring duplex.

— Officials say a woman
died and three homes
burned in a blaze that
may have been started by
fireworks in Springfield,
Oregon.
Fire crews responded
shortly before 10 p.m.
Thursday. The fire was
under control a little more
than an hour later.
Authorities have yet to
identify the woman who
was killed, but a man vis-
iting the scene told The
Register-Guard it was his
75-year-old grandmother.

2:31 a.m. - Two campers squatting
near Southeast 13th Place and 13th
Street, Irrigon, drew a complaint to the
Morrow County Sheriff’s Office due to
“a lot of traffic going on now and a lot of
flashlights.”
11:02 a.m. - The Morrow County
Sheriff’s Office received a complaint of
employee theft at Heppner Market Fresh,
238 N. Main St., Heppner.
11:33 a.m. - The Umatilla County
Sheriff’s Office received a report of a
burglary on North Blaine Street, Adams.
11:36 a.m. - Morrow County sheriff’s
deputies responded to the county
courthouse, 100 S. Court St., Heppner, for
a man who was upset, threw papers at the
clerk’s window and threatened the clerk.
The man left.
2:09 p.m. - Sheep blocked the road at
Umatilla River and Bensel roads, Umatilla.
3:43 p.m. - A 17-year-old boy suffered
a shoulder injury and had head pain
following a single-vehicle rollover at the
Willow Creek Country Club, Heppner. An
ambulance took the boy to a local hospital.
4:33 p.m. - Umatilla police warned
residents on John Day Street for using
illegal fireworks.
4:57 p.m. - Six cows blocked Bensel
Road at Highway 395 North, Hermiston.
7:04 p.m. - A Heppner resident
reported she was the victim of an IRS
phone scam and wanted the Morrow
County Sheriff’s Office to know in case
other reports come up.
10:01 p.m. - The Umatilla County
Sheriff’s Office checked Lewis Street in
McNary on a fireworks complaint.
10:30 p.m. - Hermiston police received
a report of a burglary on the 200 block of
Northeast Seventh Street.
ARRESTS, CITATIONS
•A crash between a Ford Focus and a
semi-tractor led to an arrest.
Oregon State Police reported the
vehicles collided at about 5:50 p.m. on
Highway 730 near milepost 187. The semi
was undamaged, but the car needed a
tow truck, while passenger Ret Nathan
Taylor, 49, of Kennewick, needed medical
attention at Good Shepherd Medical
Center, Hermiston.
State police found Taylor also had a
warrant for contempt of court, so troopers
arrested him at the hospital and following
his release put him into the Umatilla
County Jail, Pendleton.
