First Draft welcomes Pacific Northwest landscapes inspires artist
Lakota poet/musician ‘Seeing The West’
opens July 13 at
Brings Plenty
Pendleton’s
PENDLETON — Tre-
vino L. Brings Plenty, an
American Indian poet and
musician, is the featured
presenter for the July First
Draft Writers’ Series.
A Lakota, Brings Plenty
was born on the Cheyenne
River Sioux Reservation in
South Dakota. Some of his
work explores the Amer-
ican Indian identity in
American culture and how
it has through genealogi-
cal history affected indig-
enous peoples in the 21st
century. He also writes
about urban Indian life.
Brings Plenty will take
the stage Thursday, July
19 at 7 p.m. at Pendleton
Center for the Arts, 214 N.
Main St. In addition, there
will be an open mic for
local writers to read from
their work.
He’s also singer/song-
writer/guitarist for the
musical ensemble Ballads
of Larry Drake. In addi-
tion, Brings Plenty has
read/performed his work
at poetry festivals as far
away as Amman, Jordan,
and close to his home base
at Portland’s Wordstock
Festival.

Some of his titles
include “Wakpa Wan-
agi, Ghost River” (2015),
“Real Indian Junk Jew-
elry” (2012) and “Shed-
ding Skins: Four Sioux
Poets” (2008).
Showcasing
notable
Pacific Northwest authors,
First Draft Writers’ Series
meets the third Thursday
of each month. For more

ers’ series, call 541-278-

Retirement has provided
Jerry Mishler more time to
travel the open roads and
historic byways, which is
the inspiration for his paint-
ings and drawings.
Until last year, Mishler
managed a small company
that made perlite, which
is utilized in potting soil.
Now, he has the freedom to
roam throughout the Pacific
Northwest to further pursue
his interest in art.
“I had my first show in
Portland galleries in the late
1990s,” Mishler said. “It’s
tough when you’re work-
ing full time. You have x
amount of time. I mostly
devoted it to becoming bet-
ter and not marketing.”
The Corbett-based art-
ist often embarks on trips
to take photos of potential
subjects and then returns to
his studio to paint. In addi-
tion, he enjoys hanging out
in nature — creating small
en plein air (French for
outdoor) paintings of the
scenery.

Landscape paintings and drawings by Jerry Mishler are featured in “Seeing The
West.” An opening reception for the exhibit is July 13 at Pendleton Art + Frame.
A number of Mishler’s
latest pieces are featured
in an upcoming exhibition
at Pendleton Art + Frame.
“Seeing The West” features
oil paintings and smaller
pen and ink drawings that
are enhanced with col-
ored pencils. The public is
invited to an opening recep-
tion Friday, July 13 from
5-7 p.m. at 36 S.W. Court
Ave., Pendleton.
Mishler met Cherise
Baker of Pendleton Art +
Frame a number of years
ago when she lived in Cor-
bett. He was showing some
of this work and someone
told him about her skill in
framing.
Also, Baker said Mishler
creates illustrated calendars
of his images each year. She
has carried them at the gal-
lery since 2012.
The exhibit will remain
through Aug. 31. Pendleton
Art + Frame is open Mon-
day through Saturday. For
more information, contact
541-276-3617 or artoffram-
ing@eotnet.net.
