MARINERS: Paxton up next against Sox OSU: Heimlich will

promoting Rob Wha-
len (long relief) and right-
hander Nick Rumbelow
(one-inning pitcher) from
Triple-A Tacoma. To make
room, first baseman Dan
Vogelbach was optioned to
Tacoma, and reliever Mike
Morin was designated for
assignment.
Seager returned after
a one-game absence after
tending to a personal matter
Wednesday with his wife,
Julie, who is pregnant. Sea-
ger said everything at home
came out OK. Left-fielder
Ben Gamel took ground-
ers at first base before the
game. He played one game
at that position last season.
TRAINER’S ROOM
Red Sox: 2B Dustin
Pedroia (left knee inflam-
mation) is still not doing
any
baseball
activity,
although he did work out in
the visiting clubhouse gym
Thursday. “We are going to
be patient,” manager Alex
Cora said. ... LHP Drew
Pomeranz (left biceps ten-
dinitis) played catch Thurs-
day and is feeling better,
Cora said. ... RHP Tyler
Thornburg (right shoulder)
was scheduled to make a
start Thursday for Triple-A
Pawtucket as he makes his

way back from thoracic
outlet surgery.
Mariners: RHP Nick
Vincent (strained right
groin) continues to play
catch every day, as he did
before the game Thurs-
day. It is uncertain when he
will get back on the mound
for a bullpen session. Ser-
vais said he is hopeful Vin-
cent and RHP Juan Nicasio
(right knee) will be able to
return from the 10-day dis-
abled list early in the team’s
upcoming road trip, starting
Tuesday in New York.
UP NEXT
Red Sox: RHP Rick Por-
cello (8-3, 3.54 ERA), the
AL’s reigning Cy Young
Award winner, has gone six
innings and given up two
earned runs in each of his
past three starts (two wins).
This will be his 13th career
start against the Mariners,
and he is 3-1 with a 2.22
ERA at Safeco Field.
Mariners: LHP James
Paxton (6-1, 3.02 ERA) is
5-0 with a 1.87 ERA since
early May. Paxton is 2-0
with a 0.39 ERA against
Boston, having given up
just one earned run in 23
innings. He beat the Red
Sox last July with seven
scoreless innings.
suspended for a violation of
team rules. OSU was already
without staff ace Luke Heim-
lich, who chose to not pitch
after a report surfaced detail-
ing his juvenile record.
The Beavers are expected
to have their full roster avail-
able this time around.
“We feel like anytime you
can go to a tournament with
your entire club, that helps,”
Casey said. “We were with-
out a couple guys last year
and I still felt like we were a
good enough club to move
on and do some of the things
we wanted to do. We played
a great club in LSU and we
weren’t able to sustain that
momentum we had, so hope-
fully we’ll able to come out of
the chute and play well.”
Heimlich likely to pitch
opener
Casey said he “would
assume” Heimlich, the two-
time Pac-12 pitcher of the
year, will get the start against
North Carolina.
“We study that tape, look
at the matchup,” Casey elabo-
rated. “We know we’re going
to play two games, and it’s
kind of like that deal in the
regionals where you don’t
know who you’re going to
play in Game 2. You certainly
know who you’re going to
play in Game 1, so the deci-
sion will be based on (North
Carolina).”
Heimlich (16-1, 2.32
earned run average) leads
Division I in victories and
is third nationally with 151
strikeouts. The senior left-
hander has won nine consec-
utive starts entering the CWS.
OSU’s all-time leader in
strikeouts with 377, Heimlich
needs one more victory to sur-
pass Ben Wetzler’s 36 for the
most in program history.
Gretler practices
In the ninth inning of Sat-
urday’s 6-3 victory over Min-
nesota that clinched the Cor-
vallis Super Regional, Gretler
took a fastball off his left hand
but was able to stay in the
game. The honorable mention
all-Pac-12 third baseman was
also hit in the same hand the
previous week against LSU.
Gretler participated in
Monday’s practice and is
expected to be available at the
CWS.
“Mike’s a tough guy,”
Casey said. “I think if he
probably was (injured),
he wouldn’t tell anybody
anyway.”
