Diesel technology program revs up with 2018 car show By TAMMY MALGESINI East Oregonian Students in the diesel technology program at Blue Mountain Community College get a lift from money raised during the Cruisin’ for Scholarships Car Show. In its sixth year, schol- arships offer assistance for things such as books, tuition, tools and living expenses. The support provides an important lifeline for some students who might not otherwise be able to partic- ipate in the program. The event, coordinated by the BMCC Foundation, is Saturday, May 12 beginning with on-site registration at 8:30 a.m. on the central lawn at BMCC, 2411 N.W. Carden Ave., Pendleton. The $20 fee includes a dash plaque. Also, the first 50 entries will receive a goodie bag. People can register in advance at www.bluecc. edu/carshow. All makes, models, years and types of vehicles may enter. Awards will be presented to winners of each category, which includes best of show, people’s choice, president’s choice, cars by decade, best motorcycle and many more. The show starts wrapping up around 1 p.m. with an announcement of the awards. Ian Shadle and Bonnie Day have taken the reins the last few years in coordi- nating the car show. Shadle said the event usually draws more than 100 entries when the weather cooperates. Even with intermittent rain throughout the 2017 event, there were about 70 entries, including Steve Rion, who took home the best of show trophy for his 1935 Ford 2-door sedan. The event, Shadle said, typically brings in between $10,000 to $15,000. “It raises money to go to specific students for specific needs,” he said. “It goes to a really good cause to students who would otherwise have to drop out of the program if they can’t buy tools or pay tuition.” In addition to the car show, the event features a dunk tank, a barbecue and raffles for such items as a flat-screen TV, an air-condi- tioning fan and a cash prize. Raffle ticket prices are $1 and $5. For more information, including sponsorship opportunities, call the BMCC Foundation office at 541-278-5823. ——— Contact Community Editor Tammy Malgesini at tmalgesini@eastoregonian. com or 541-564-4539 SPRING COLLECTIVE GOODS SALE, 7:30 a.m.-5 p.m., Good Shepherd Medical Center conference room 1, 610 N.W. 11th St., Hermiston.
