UMATILLA — The hosting
Umatilla Vikings earned a league
doubleheader sweep of the
Nyssa Vikings with 8-4 and 1-0
victories on Friday afternoon.
The Vikings (7-7 overall, 3-6
Eastern Oregon League) had
a pair of solid pitching perfor-
mances Friday. Cody Samson
threw 6 2/3 innings in Game 1
and struck out six while giving
up five hits and four runs for
the win. In Game 2, Kole Keller
threw a five-inning shutout with
two strikeouts while allowing
only two hits to the Bulldogs
(1-20, 1-8).
On offense, the Vikings
were led by Seth Cranston, who
compiled four hits total with a
home run, two doubles, four RBI
and scored five runs. Keller also
had four hits with three RBI.
STANFIELD 2-3, JOSEPH

10-game win streak came to an
end Friday night. After taking
Game 1, 2-1, in the double-
header against Joseph, the Tigers
dropped Game 2 18-3.
The loss is Stanfield’s first
in the Eastern Oregon League
this year and now the Tigers
sit at 15-5 overall and 9-1 in
the EOL. The Tigers have a
non-league matchup slated next
before playing the final two
regular-season doubleheaders.

split doubleheader
IRRIGON 6-11, VALE
14-9 — In Vale, the Irrigon
Knights split a doubleheader
with the Vale Vikings dropping
the opener 14-6 and winning the
second 11-9.
In the second game the
Knights (9-8 overall, 5-5 Eastern
Oregon League) strung together
14 hits to score its 11 runs.
Adrian Roa led the team going
4-for-5 with two runs and an RBI
and Johnny Phillips went 3-for-5
with three RBI and a run. Zack
Henrichs added two hits with a
double and Keith Fleming had
two hits as well.
Roa also started the game
on the mound and struck out
five Vikings (10-7, 7-2) in three
innings and Phillips and Brady
Harrington each threw two
innings of relief to seal the win.
BURNS 11-15, RIVERSIDE
8-5 — On Friday in Boardman,
Riverside was swept by the
Burns Hilanders to fall to 1-8
in the Eastern Oregon League.
The Pirates are only 5-13 on the
PENDLETON — If you ask
Kalan McGlothan about her first
game back after nearly two weeks
out due to injury, the senior third
baseman will shrug and give you a
sideways smile.
On Tuesday against Hood River
Valley, McGlothan went 0-for-4
and only reached base on an error
by Hood River’s left fielder. Head
coach Tim Cary commented on her
timing after the 8-5 win and knew it
would take a while for the second-
team All-State returner to get things
going in the batter’s box.
All it took for McGlothan was
three days.
On Friday in Game 2 of a
doubleheader against Hermiston,
McGlothan ripped a home run
over the right-field fence — with
a little help from the wind — and
put the Buckaroos up for good. The
two-run home run was the first of
two in the fourth inning and helped
complete the sweep to keep Pend-
leton’s spotless in the Columbia
River Conference.
“It felt really good,” McGlothan
said of her best at bat of the day. “I
went up there and I just knew I was
going to get a hit, that I was going to
get one base.”
She went 4-for-6 against the
Bulldogs and was on one of a
number of Bucks to have a standout
day.
After handily taking Game 1
14-0, McGlothan and Kila Solo-
mon’s homers opened up Game 2
and the duo helped push Pendleton
to an 11-1 victory.
“The two home runs we huge,”
Cary said, “great momentum
starters right there and got us a
comfortable lead where we could
go out and play defense and breathe
a little bit.”
Hermiston coach and

Moore, returns home

Jordan Ramirez, of Hermiston, goes into a slide as Pendleton third
baseman Ryan Stahl waits for a throw Friday against Pendleton at
Bob White Field.
PENDLETON — When Herm-
iston head coach Kevin Moore
walked down into Pendleton’s Bob
White Field on Friday afternoon, he
took a moment to soak in the scene.
Moore, a Pendleton native and
1995 graduate of Pendleton High,
grew up at the Buckaroos’ home
field and developed his love for the
game there.
After seeing longtime Pendleton
coach Mike Hodgen still roaming
the dugout, as well as a memorial
sign on the home bleachers for
Moore’s old coach, Lyle Phelps,
the memories and emotions started
rushing back to Moore.
“This is where I grew up, this is
what I called home,” an emotional
Moore said. “... it is emotional
because this is the place that you
eat, sleep and breathe baseball. This
is where I learned the game, and to
be on the opposite side of things
now, I’m happy.
“But if it wasn’t for those guys
over there (Pendleton’s coaches),
I wouldn’t be in this situation I
am today because they made me
the man I am and taught me how
to coach the game and play the
game. But when I’m over here on
the opposite side now, I want to
compete against them and beat
them.”
It was a partially good home-
coming for Moore, as his Hermiston
Bulldogs earned a doubleheader
split with the rival Buckaroos,
where two pitchers stole the show.
