INVITE: Students from ten different schools competed
Continued from 1B
Linares was one of the several local
standouts at the meet, as the Buckaroos’
sophomore long jumper and triple jumper
continues his breakout season. Linares
turned in a personal record of 20-feet,
11-inches in the long jump and a second-best
jump of 42-feet, 1½-inches in the triple jump
to finish second place in both events. In five
meets this season, Linares’ worst finish is
fifth place in both events and has finished
second twice.
He jokes that his sophomore success is
thanks to the protein shakes that Pendleton
jumps coach Bill Aney gets before meets. In
all seriousness, though, Linares believes his
performance simply comes from wanting to
be the best.
“Honestly, it’s just the competition,”
Linares said. “I was used to all of these
smaller schools and stuff where you jump
40 feet (in triple jump) and that’s it, you’re
good. But then we started going to these
Washington meets and competing against
bigger schools where you get better jumpers
and that motivates me, too, and it makes you
think more.
“It’s kind of just really wanting it and
leaving it all out there.”
Also turning in a strong performance on
Friday was the Hermiston Bulldogs’ girls
team, which battled for first place all day
long before settling into second place with
144 points — just 20 points behind first-
place Kamiakin.
The shining star for the Bulldogs was the
rock-solid 4x100-meter relay team of Scout
Reagan, Madison Wilson, MaKaylee Young
and Elsa Torres. The foursome finished in
first Friday with their best time of the season
and finally broke the 50-second threshold
with a 49.01. It’s the third time in four meets
that those four have finished in first place.
Individually, Wilson breezed to victories
in both the 100- and 300-meter hurdles. In
the 100, Wilson finished in a season-best
15.12 seconds with more than a one-second
cushion on second place, and in the 300
Wilson turned in a new personal record
46.35.
Torres had a strong day, too, finishing first
in the 400-meter dash (1:01.53), second in
the 200-meter dash (26.22) and third in the
long jump (15-6.50). Reagan also finished
second in the 100-meter dash (12.48) and
third in the 200-meter dash (26.51).
Other Bulldog girls earning top-five
finishes included Stephanie Miears finishing
first in shot put (42-feet, 6-inches), Amanda
Nygard second in the 800-meter run
(2:28.46), Julianna Joyce third in the 3000-
meter run (11:46.42), Sheridan Dieke fourth
in discus (102-10) and javelin (98-8.50),
Jayden Ray fifth in 300-meter hurdles
(51.44) and Hannah Thompson fifth in shot
put (34-2).
The Hermiston boys finished in third
place with 83 points, and it was paced by
first place finishes from Tyler Rohrman
in the 110-meter hurdles (14.62) and
Jackson Morgan in the high jump (6-foot-
3). Rohrman had a solid day overall, also
finishing fourth with a personal record in
the 100-meter dash (11.49) and fifth in the
300-meter hurdles (42.27).
Other top-five finishers for the Bulldogs
included Isaac Sanchez finishing third in the
1500-meter run (4:23.49), Carson Wrathall
tying for third in pole vault (12-feet),
Antonio Fernandez third in discus (129-10),
Freddy Mendoza fourth in the 800-meter run
(2:02.62), Jonathan Hinkle fifth in 200-meter
dash (23.39) and Sean Stewart fifth in shot
put (41-11).
Pendleton’s boys and girls teams finished
with nearly identical scores, with the Buck-
aroo girls in fifth with 68 points and the
girls in sixth with 68.33. And just as Linares
was a star for the boys team, so was Jaiden
Lemberger for the girls.

Lemberger, a senior, won the long jump
with a distance of 16-feet flat, then finished
tied for second with teammate Zoe Jones in
the high jump after clearing a season-best
4-feet-8, and finally finished third in the
100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.95.
Also in the top five for the Pendleton girls
was Emanuela Casadei as she was second in
triple jump (32-9, personal record) and fifth
in long jump (15-3, personal record), Hunter
Kiele third in shot put (34-5), and Sarah
Scott fifth in javelin (94-7.50).
The Pendleton boys finished with 11
top-five finishes overall, and six of those
came with new personal-best perfor-
mances. Nick Zdroy-Oja finished second
in the 800-meter run (2:01.30, PR), Dillon
McCorkle was third in the javelin (147-5.50,
PR), Syler Rimbach tied for third in pole
vault (12-feet, PR), Lane Maher third in the
300-meter hurdles (41.46, PR), Aaron Luke
fourth in 200-meter dash (23.28, PR) and
fifth in the 400-meter dash (53.69, PR).
The 4x400-meter relay team of Lane
Maher, Richard Scott, Nick Zdroy-Oja and
Aaron Luke also finished in third with a time
of 3:42.03. And also of note was freshman
triple jumper Zannan Bane, who broke his
previous personal record by nearly three feet
with a jump of 40-feet, 1½-inches to finish
eighth in the event.
And for the Mac-Hi Pioneers, Bianca
Garcia won the javelin throw with a
distance of 121-feet, 5-inches, and Brianna
Hernandez was fourth in the 400-meter dash
with a time of 1:05.03.
Pendleton and Hermiston both have just
over two weeks left of the regular season
until the district championships, which will
be back at Kennison Field in Hermiston on
May 9-10.
