RECORDS Wednesday, April 4, 2018 PUBLIC SAFETY LOG OBITUARIES MONDAY Jesse Richard Poland 12:35 a.m. - Hermiston police responded to a report of burglary on the 300 block of East Gladys Avenue. 6:19 a.m. - Oregon State Police were called to a rollover accident on Highway 11 near milepost 23. The vehicle hit an icy spot, left the roadway and struck a rock embankment before rolling. The driver was uninjured, but the vehicle had to be towed. 7:30 a.m. - A resident of Buchanan Place, Irrigon, reported to the Morrow County Sheriff’s Office that his and his neigh- bors’ mailboxes have been hit and damaged. 7:47 a.m. - The Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office investigated a theft report from a resident of Sand Hollow Road and Highway 334, Adams. 8:53 a.m. - A vehicle break-in was reported on Northeast Misty Drive, Hermiston. 9:07 a.m. - Hermiston police received a theft report from a resident of Northeast Second Place. 9:23 a.m. - Umatilla police investigated and initiated removal of graffiti at locations on Cedar Court, Willamette Avenue, Yakima Street, Klickitat Street, Switzler Avenue, the Umatilla Baptist Church, Chenowith Avenue and Columbia Boulevard throughout the day. 10:22 a.m. - A Miller Trail Blazer welder was reported stolen by resident of Taggares Lane, Boardman. The caller told Morrow County sheriff’s deputies that the theft happened sometime over the weekend. 11:11 a.m. - A Hermiston man called Hermiston police to report his boss gave his payroll money to his cousin, but his cousin didn’t give him the money. 11:15 a.m. - A fight was reported at Northeast 10th Street, Hermiston. There was no indication of arrests made by Hermiston police. 11:21 a.m. - Burglary was reported at a residence on Canal Road, Hermiston. Umatilla County sheriff’s deputies responded. 12:09 p.m. - Hermiston police received another theft report, this time at a location on South Highway 395. 12:34 p.m. - Pendleton police were called to Keystone RV, 3000 Westgate, by an employee complaining of harassment and assault. 1:22 p.m. - A vehicle was reported stolen from Buck’s Corner, Highway 395 North and Highway 730, near Umatilla. The Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office took a theft report. 1:49 p.m. - A Pendleton police officer responded to Sunridge Middle School, 700 S.W. Runnion Ave., for a harassment report. 2:11 p.m. - A Hermiston resident discovered the lock on her storage unit had been cut off and replaced with a different lock. She requested assistance from Hermiston police. 2:28 p.m. - Theft was reported by an employee of The Clean Spot car wash, 630 Switzler Ave., Umatilla. 3:09 p.m. - Another theft report in Hermiston, this time from a location on North First Street. 4:07 p.m. - A resident of East Newport Avenue, Hermiston, called Hermiston police to report someone is stacking wood along his house near where his wife’s office is located. He requested contact from an officer. 4:13 p.m. - The Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office and Umatilla County Fire District 1 personnel responded to a reported grass fire on the east side of the highway across from Space Age Fuel, 77522 Highway 207, Hermiston. 4:26 p.m. - A resident of Linden Way, Heppner, reported his mountain bike stolen, and told Morrow County sheriff’s deputies that he has the suspect on video. 4:46 p.m. - A resident of West Orchard Street in Stanfield reported his property on Baxter Road, Hermiston, is being burglarized. He also reported being a victim of elder abuse. Stanfield police and Umatilla County sheriff’s deputies investigated. 4:46 p.m. - A bird ornament was reported stolen from a yard in the 700 block of College Street, Milton-Freewater. 6:42 p.m. - Hermiston police retrieved a credit card that was placed in a mailbox on Northeast Ninth Street. 7 p.m. - Three blond teenage girls kicked down the door at a residence on East Highway 730, Irrigon, to burglarize the house, the resident reported. Morrow County sheriff’s deputies took a report. 8:21 p.m. - Another North First Street location in Hermiston was a victim of theft. Hermiston police investigated. 9:47 p.m. - Pendleton police were called to Circle K, 335 S.E. Court Ave., to deal with a man causing a scene and refusing to leave the premises. ARRESTS, CITATIONS Monday •Milton-Freewater police arrested Donald Morris Edwards, 43, address not provided, on a felony fugitive warrant. •An Oregon State Police trooper saw a vehicle sitting off the side of Interstate 84 near milepost 199, and on stopping to check on the welfare of the occupants found Naomi Kay Workman, 32, of La Grande in the driver’s seat looking very shaken. Workman stated that she heard a loud bang just before losing control of the vehicle and thought she had blown a tire. EMS personnel at the scene later discovered that 51-year-old Denis Kay Ward, also of La Grande, who was sitting in the back seat of the vehicle when contacted by OSP, had been the driver when the accident occurred, and was possibly under the influence of a controlled substance. Both the woman and three juveniles who were in the vehicle were transported to St. Anthony Hospital for evaluation. Following interviews at the hospital, OSP charged Ward with driving under the influence of intoxicants (inhalants) and four counts of reckless endangerment, and Workman with interfering with a peace officer. The vehicle, which had hit two fog markers during the accident, was towed. Tuesday •The Morrow County Sheriff’s Office arrested Jose Manuel Longoria, 27, address not provided, on a felony probation violation and misdemeanors of felon in possession of a weapon, carrying concealed weapons and contempt of court. •Pendleton police arrested Michelle L. Andrews, 29, Pendleton, for DUII. Jesse Richard Poland was born December 28, 1932, in Willow Springs, Missouri, the son of William and Ruth (Cooper) Poland. He died on Saturday, March 31, 2018, in Hermiston at the age of 85. As a child, Jesse traveled extensively with his family until settling in Oregon in the late 1940s. He served in both the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Army and served during the Korean Conflict. He resided in the communities of Milton-Freewater, Poland Pendleton and Umatilla before moving to Hermiston in 2014. He worked at several jobs in Umatilla County before being hired by the postal service in Pendleton. He worked as a postal carrier and later as a clerk at the Pendleton post office for a combined 23 years, retiring in the late 1990s. Jesse loved playing his guitar for church, in a band or just to entertaining his friends. He also enjoyed working on cars and loved his pets. Jesse married Marilyn “Joanne” Garrett in Pend- leton on June 1, 1957. He is survived by his wife of nearly 61 years, Marilyn “Joanne” Poland; sons Michael (Pam) Poland and granddaughters Alex and Andrea, and Eric John Poland; daughter Leah (Mark) Stollar-Hooker and granddaughters Jasmine, Jade and Jacinda; great-grandson Sylas; sisters Elsie Bauman and Kath- eryn Serta; brother Eugene Poland; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Gail Meek, on March 12, 2018. No formal services are planned. A private burial will be in Olney Cemetery in Pendleton.
