BRIEFLY Officer shoots suspect in Medford MEDFORD (AP) — A Medford police officer shot and wounded a suspect who authorities say was armed with a rifle. Oregon State Police Lt. Mark Duncan says officers responded Thursday to a report that 41-year-old William Shelton was menacing with a firearm at a home that included children. A SWAT team and hostage negotiators arrived when Shelton wouldn’t leave the home. Duncan says Shelton eventually came outside, firing several shots from a rifle. A Medford police office then fired a round that hit Shelton in the upper chest. He is expected to survive. Wrong-way driver critically injured in I-5 crash SALEM (AP) — Oregon State Police say a driver was critically injured in a wrong-way crash on Interstate 5 near Lake Oswego, and a second motorist was arrested for driving the wrong way on the freeway in Salem. The agency says 25-year-old Sydney Lopez Martinez of Cornelius was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes early Friday when she hit the side of one semi and collided with another. She was flown to OHSU Hospital. Accepting New Patients East Oregonian PUBLIC SAFETY LOG THURSDAY 6:08 a.m. - Murphy B. Andrews, 27, of Milton-Freewater, suffered injuries when he struck an elk while driving. Oregon State Police reported Andrews was heading south in a Nissan Sentry when he crashed into the elk near milepost 21 Highway 11. An ambulance took Murphy to a local hospital due to his injuries. State police did not report the extent of his injuries. 9:49 a.m. - Residents on Elizabeth Street, Milton-Freewater, reported they were the victims of criminal behavior. The first caller told police someone stole multiple items from his garage on the 400 block of South Elizabeth. The next call came at 1:41 p.m. from the 300 block of North Elizabeth, where someone threw eggs at a home. 9 a.m. - Scam callers claiming to be with the IRS tried to con a Pilot Rock resident, who reported the incident to police. 9:58 a.m. - That’s one way to break up a fight. A caller reported five people were fighting at the Threemile Campground at Threemile Road, Boardman. The caller also said someone sprayed the “initiator” of the fight with bear repellent. The Morrow County Sheriff’s Office responded and took a report. 10:09 a.m. - Scam callers claiming to be with the Social Security Administration tried to con an Echo resident, who reported the incident to law enforcement. 1:40 p.m. - Pendleton police responded to a report of a driver going the wrong way on Southwest Emigrant near 18th Street. ARRESTS, CITATIONS •Pendleton police arrested Michael Thomas Hall, 30, of Pendleton, on a warrant for failure to appear in a drug case and on new charges of felony possession of meth, resisting arrest, interfering with a peace officer and third-degree escape. • A car crash in downtown Pendleton led to an arrest for an intoxicated driver. The wreck occurred about 9:15 p.m. on Southeast Dorion Avenue at First Street. Pendleton police reported officers arrived and they found a car legally parked on the south side of the roadway that was damaged and another car on its driver’s side in the lanes of travel. The driver and only occupant of the second car was Elfrina Lubrin, 42, of Pendleton. She was heading east, according to police, when she struck the unoccupied parked car, causing her car to turn onto its side. Pendleton emergency medics treated Lubrin at the scene, then officers arrested her for driving under the influence of intoxicants and reckless driving. State police reported trying to contact the probation officer several times, but they failed. Police gave the passenger a ride to a local home, released Gonsalves and sent a message to the probation officer. 11:41 p.m. - Umatilla police received a 911 report from a caller on Devore Road near McNary Dam of someone possibly shooting a machine gun. The driver was gone by the time people arrived. 1:57 p.m. - Hermiston police responded to a disturbance on the 1100 block of West Highland Avenue. 3:47 p.m. - Elizabeth Ann Schulte, 51, of Heppner, crashed on Highway 74 and suffered injuries, according to Oregon State Police. Schulte was traveling east in a Chevrolet Caviler when it left the road near milepost 38, state police reported, and she over-corrected, The car fishtailed before spinning clockwise off the road and down the shoulder of the eastbound lane, where it rolled to the bottom of the slope. State police did not report the extent of her injuries, but an ambulance took her to a local hospital. 3:52 p.m. - Pilot Rock police remain serious about trying to get people to remove their vehicles from the public right-of-way. Police left notices on vehicles on Southwest Cherry Northeast Third, Northeast Fourth and Northeast Hickory streets. 6:15 p.m. - The Morrow County Sheriff’s Office responded to a residence on Southeast 13th Place, Irrigon, on a report of electricity theft. A deputy took reports for burglary and other crimes. 10:12 p.m. - Pendleton police received a report of gunshots at the Eastern Oregon Regional Airport. This could have been the military training that is occurring at the airport this week. 11:44 p.m. - Oregon State Police stopped a green Ford Ranger at Westgate Drive and Murietta Road, Pendleton, for multiple violations.
