Buckaroos bash Braves
Pendleton pounds
16 hits, scores
18 runs in win

ENDLETON — As the Pend-
leton softball team took its
positions at Steve Cary Field
on Wednesday to begin its game
with Kamiakin, each player did so
with a little bit of fatigue plus a few
bumps and bruises.
Why? Because Wednesday was
Pendleton’s fifth game in the span
of three days, following its two-day
stay in the Happy Valley Tourna-
ment in Milwaukie. However the
Buckaroos did not let those factors
bother
them
against Kami-
SOFTBALL akin, as they
cranked out 16
hits and pushed
across 18 runs in
Pendleton
a 18-0 win over
the Braves.

we want every
game,”

than, who went
2-for-4
with
three runs scored
and a solo home run.
Although five games in a short
span can bring fatigue and soreness,
McGlothan and Buckaroos’ coach
Tim Cary both agreed that it has
been a big benefit to the offense by
simply getting repetitions against
live pitching.
“As the games progress you get
a little strong in your hitting, and I
think we showed that today,” Cary
said. “We’ve seen five live pitchers
in a row right now and it’s so much
better than to see me throwing
batting practice ... and that pays off
in a positive way where by game
five we’re really comfortable at the
plate.”
The Buckaroos have proved that
they are comfortable by winning all
five games of the week, including
scoring double-digit runs in each of
the last three games. On Wednesday,
the Buckaroos got at least one hit
from every spot in the lineup and
had seven extra-base hits overall.
“I think the more we score and
the more at-bats we get, the more
confident our hitters are, and so
this is a very positive thing to have
this early in the season,” Cary said.

PENDLETON — The Pend-
leton Buckaroos finished off a
perfect 4-0 mark at its Red Lion
Buckaroo Baseball Classic on
Wednesday afternoon as they
defeated Rex Putnam 14-8 and
Roseburg 9-8.
Against Putnam, the Buck-
aroos (5-5) cranked out 12 hits
from eight different players.
Ryan Russell led the team going
3-for-3 with two home runs,
one double and six RBI total.
Russell’s first long ball was a
grand slam in the third inning for
a 7-3 Buckaroo lead and he later
hit a two-run shot to left in the
sixth inning to go up 14-8.
Avery Deutz had two doubles
in the game as well, while Gabe
Umbarger tripled and had two
hits overall with two runs scored.
Then against Roseburg (5-1)
the Buckaroos trailed 8-6 in
the bottom of the sixth before
getting its rally going. Tucker
Zander started the inning with
a walk and then later scored on
a wild pitch. Then Nick Bower
smacked a double that brought in
Daniel Naughton and Ryan Stahl
for the go-ahead run for a 9-8
Buckaroo lead.
In the seventh with Zander
on the mound, Roseburg loaded
the bases with two singles and a
walk. However Zander induced
an infield fly out and a fly out to
right field to save the game.
Bower finished the game
a team-best 3-for-4 with his
double. The only other extra-
base hit was a three-run home run
to center by Naughton in the first
inning. Naughton also started the
game on the mound and struck
out seven while allowing seven
runs (only two earned) in 4 2/3
innings.

Timberwolves split with Yaks
East Oregonian
PENDLETON — The Blue
Mountain Timberwolves finally
began regional play on Wednesday
afternoon as they split a double-
header with a very good Yakima
Valley program on a windy day in
Pendleton. The Yaks (19-5 overall,
1-1 East) scored 15 unanswered
runs in the opener to win 15-1 and
the Timberwolves (12-10, 1-1)
earned a 7-5 win in the second
game.
In the Timberwolves’ Game
2 victory, both teams traded runs
through the first half of the game
before BMCC held on late.
Yakima took the lead in the top
of the first on an RBI single by
John Sage, but the Timberwolves
answered in the bottom half when
TJ Rea came across to score from
third to tie the game at 1-1.
After the Yaks went up 2-1 in
the third, the Timberwolves again
answered on a sacrifice fly by
Nate Cantonwine to bring home
Dustin Durflinger to tie it at 2-2.
The teams matched scoring one
more time in the fourth inning with
the Yaks adding two runs and the
Timberwolves getting two on a RBI
groundout by Kyler Lunny and a
bases-loaded walk by TJ Rea.
The Yaks took a 5-4 lead in the
fifth inning, however this time the
Timberwolves waited one more
inning to get back in it. In the
bottom of the sixth, Garrett Friesz
scored from third on a passed ball
to tie the game at 5-5 and then
Cooper Saxton scored on a Yakima
error to put the Timberwolves their
first lead of the game at 6-5. Two
batters later, Tanner Broom gave
the Timberwolves a bit of a cushion
with an RBI single for a 7-5 lead.
Brooks Juhasz earned the victory
on the mound after throwing 1
2/3 perfect innings of relief. Noah
Keough picked up the save after
throwing 2 1/3 scorless innings
while allowing only two hits.
Durflinger and Friesz were the
Timberwolves’ top hitters with two
hits a piece, while Broom and Rea
each had two RBI.
