CHRISTIAN 3, PILOT
ROCK 1 — At Pilot Rock,
the Umpqua Valley Christian
Monarchs got the best of the
Pilot Rock Rockets again on
Tuesday with a 3-1 victory.
It was a rematch of last
season’s Class 2A/1A first-
round playoff game, in which
the Monarchs won 4-2.
Pilot Rock (3-1) had a
tremendous start from pitcher
Levi Thieme, who allowed
four hits and three runs with
eight strikeouts and zero
walks in seven innings. He
was out-dueled, though, by
the Monarchs’ Jacob Luther
and Aaron Buechley, who
allowed only two hits and
one run with eight strikeouts.
Pilot Rock’s only run
came in the sixth on an RBI
single from Cade Munkers,
bringing in Logan Weinke.

11 runs in the top of the fifth
inning as they defeated the
Riverside Pirates on Tuesday
in the Riverside/Irrigon Tour-
nament.
Garrett Shell, Travis
Hendley and Parker Munck
each had two hits to lead
the TigerScots (2-4), while
Weston Phillips had a team-
best three RBI. Hendley
earned the win on the mound
with eight strikeouts and only
two hits allowed in 5 2/3

KENNEDY
19,
WESTON-MCEWEN 14
— At Boardman, the Weston-
McEwen pitching staff had
a rough outing against the
Kennedy Trojans as five
different players combined
to allow 18 walks and eight
hits as the Trojans pulled out
a 19-14 victory at the River-
side/Irrigon Touranment.
Parker Munck led the
TigerScots’ offense with a
perfect 4-for-4 performance
with four runs scored and
Garrett Shell was 3-for-5
with a double and a triple.
The TigerScots had 16 hits
as a team, but the incon-
sistency from the pitchers
was too much to overcome,
especially Kennedy’s 10-run
output in the second inning.

SOFTBALL
PENDLETON BUCK-
AROOS — The Pendleton
Buckaroos finished up their
two-day stint at the Happy
Valley
Tournament
on
Tuesday, battling through the
rain to finish the tournament a
perfect 4-0 after defeating La
Salle Prep 11-1 and Madison
14-4 at Hood View Park.
In the win over La Salle,
the Buckaroos (7-1) managed
10 hits and recorded zero
errors. Alexi Brehaut was
the team’s top hitter going
2-for-3, while Kila Solomon
and Carissa Cooley each
smacked a double. Lauren
Richards pitched all five
innings and struck out nine,
but struggled with command
due to the rain and recorded
seven walks.
In Game 2, Brehaut was
again a standout performer
for the Buckaroos. She
pitched 5 1/3 innings to
earn the win and also helped
herself on offense with a
home run. Kila Solomon
went 3-for-3 at the plate with
a single, a double and a home
run and Richards was 3-for-5
with a double. Elli Nirschl
also had two hits.
“All in all a very good
tournament for us,” Bucka-
roos’ coach Tim Cary said.

baserunning to earn the win.
Kendra Hart and Lyndzee
Keltz each had RBI for Echo,
with Keltz’s coming on a
groundout to the pitcher that
brought in what proved to be
the winning run.

It was another consis-
tent day for the Pendleton
offense, too. The Bucka-
roos had 10 hits from nine
different players, most
notably a booming two-run
home run by Ryan Russell
as part of Pendleton’s
seven-run third inning.
With Nick Bower on first
base after drawing a walk,
Russell turned on a first-
pitch, belt-high fastball
and crushed it over the
high fence in left field, then
rounded the bases before
being smothered by his
teammates at home plate.
Gabe Umbarger reached
base in all three plate
appearances with a pair of
walks and an RBI single,
while scoring three runs
and stealing five bases.
He has now reached base
safely in 23 of his 31 plate
appearances this season,
nearly a 75 percent success
rate through eight games.
Justin Duso had a solid
game behind Umbarger
at the plate with two hits,
two RBI and a run scored.
Naughton also had a double
for the Buckaroos.
Umbarger scored the
first run of the game in the
bottom of the first as he

BLAZERS: Harkless to undergo arthroscopic surgery
Continued from 1B
briefly came out of the game
with 5:15 left in the third
quarter. Jrue Holiday had
21 points, 11 assists and 11
rebounds for New Orleans.
Davis and Holiday
nearly helped the Pelicans
avoid a second straight
loss. After Holiday’s block
on Pat Connaughton with
20 seconds left, New
Orleans wound up with
two shots to tie or lead, but
both of E’Twaun Moore’s
3-point attempts rimmed
out. The Blazers failed
to rebound the first, but
Connaughton
corralled
the second miss with 2
seconds left and quickly
got the ball to Lillard, who
was fouled.
Jusuf Nurkic had 21
points and 10 rebounds
for Portland, highlighted
by his putback of C.J.
McCollum’s miss while
being fouled by Moore
with 3:55 left to give the
Blazers a 96-95 lead. Evan
Turner scored 14 points for
the Blazers, who further
strengthened their hold on
third place in the Western
Conference.
Al Farouq Aminu had
10 points and 10 rebounds,
including a crucial putback
of Lillard’s miss with 28
seconds left to make it
105-101.
New Orleans led by
single digits most of the
first half and by as many
as 11 twice in the third
quarter, the last time on
Davis’ 9-foot floater with
7:41 left in the period. But
by late in the quarter, the
Blazers were down just
two after Shabazz Napier’s
3.
