Army to perform exercises in
Pendleton and at McNary Dam
PENDLETON — Army soldiers will descend on Eastern
Oregon from March 26-30 for routine military exercises.
According to a Friday press release, the military personnel
will be from U.S. Army Special Operations Command from
Joint-Base Lewis-McChord near Tacoma, Washington, and
perform their exercises at locations including the Eastern
Oregon Regional Airport in Pendleton and the McNary Dam
near Umatilla.
The exercises will be between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. and
involve low-flying helicopters and airplanes, simulated
munitions and light pyrotechnics.
The exercises are meant to maintain the troops’ combat
readiness by simulating an urban environment during a
battle.
“The unit is extremely sensitive to the impact that this
military exercise may have on communities; we intend
to train safely and courteously,” the press release states.
“Every measure will be taken to reduce the amount of noise
associated with this exercise. As with all military exercises,
safety is the first priority. Soldiers will receive up-to-date
safety briefings, and safety standards must be observed at all
times during the training.”
The training has already been coordinated with the city,
local law enforcement, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers
and public safety officials. The exercises are not open to the
public.
BMCC to fill board vacancy
PENDLETON — A Blue Mountain Community College
Board of Education position has come open.
Board member Susan Plass resigned her seat at
Wednesday night’s board meeting. Plass is vacating the
position she’s held since July 2015 because she’s moving out
of the area.
Plass represents Zone 7, which includes north Pendleton
and north-central Umatilla County. Interested citizens may
apply for the position by submitting a letter of interest to the
Board of Education by Friday, April 6. The Board expects
to screen and appoint an applicant at its May 2 meeting in
Pendleton. The applicant selected by the board will serve in
the position through June 30, 2019, when the term expires.
Interested candidates should be registered voters in
Umatilla County, as well as residents of Zone 7. Applicants
should send a letter of interest to the BMCC Board of
Education, PO Box 100, Pendleton, OR 97801, or email to
sfranklin@bluecc.edu.
For more information, contact the BMCC President’s
Office, 541-278-5951.

OHSU president to earn big pension
PORTLAND (AP) —
The former president of
Oregon Health & Science
University will receive
$913,000 in annual pension
— the top public pension in
Oregon — according to an
updated pension roll.
The Oregon Public
Employees
Retirement
System pays more than
$76,000 each month to
Joe Robertson, the retired
president of OHSU, The
Oregonian/OregonLive
reported Thursday.
Robertson retired at the
end of last October after
working for the university
for 33 years. His long
career at the university and
high salary in his last three
years, which averaged
nearly $1.7 million, were
factors of his high pension.
Robertson’s
pension
surpasses that of university
neurosurgeon
Johnny
Delashaw, who retired in
2015 and receives annual
benefits of nearly $685,000.
It also exceeds the pension
of former University of
Oregon football coach
Mike Bellotti, who retired
in 2010 and receives about
$559,000 in annual bene-
fits.
The state retirement
system releases the updated
pension roll each year to the
newspaper. The updated
database includes infor-
mation on nearly 130,000
people receiving pension
benefits as of January.
Recent retirees receive
on average about $32,000
annually through the state
system. About 2,000 bene-
ficiaries earn more than
$100,000 each year.
The
66-year-old
retiree isn’t fully retired.
Robertson is continuing to
serve as president through
the end of the academic
year without a salary. He
also plans to continue
his work with one of the
university’s health insti-
tutes.
“The
only
reason
I’m retiring is for health
reasons,” Robertson said.
“This isn’t a job, it’s a
lifestyle, and you have to
be all in.”
