Irrigon (1-2) had only three hits as a team from Lino Covarrubia, Caleb Adams and Nate Gumbert. The Knights were shut down by TCP pitcher Logan Mercado, who struck out eight in five innings. In Game 2, TCP pitcher Max Nelson allowed just two hits over six innings and struck out five Knights. Covarrubia and Adams were the lone Knights to earn a hit, while Keith Fleming worked a walk as the Knights’ only other baserunner. ———— Continued from 1B UMATILLA 19, BONANZA 5 — At John Day, the Umatilla Vikings overcame cold tempera- tures and a slow start to thump the Bonanza Antlers 19-5 at the Iron Triangle Tournament on Friday. Bonanza (0-3) led 3-1 after three innings, but the Vikings (3-1) offense got going in the fourth inning and plated 18 runs over the next three frames. James Wilson and Moises Garcilazo had four hits and three RBI on the day, with Wilson adding a pair of doubles. Cody Samson and Uriel Garcia each had two hits with a triple. WALLA WALLA 6-10, PENDLETON 3-9 — At Walla Walla, Washington, the Pendleton Buckaroos dropped a doubleheader with the Walla Walla Blue Devils on Friday afternoon, losing 6-3 in the opener and then 10-9 in walk-off fashion in Game 2. In Game 1, the Buckaroos (1-5) had a decent outing from pitcher Daniel Naughton as he struck out 10 in 5 2/3 innings while giving up six runs (three earned). At the plate, Quinn Doherty had a team-best two hits while Ryan Stahl and Cam Sandford each had an RBI. But a leadoff walk followed by a single and a sacrifice bunt brought home a run for the Blue Devils to make it 9-8. And then two batters later, Walla Walla’s Connor Lemma hit a two-hopper over the Buckaroo second baseman and into right field to bring home the tying and winning runs for the 10-9 final. “On the day some guys did some good situational hitting and some guys came through for us,” Buck- aroo coach TJ Haguewood said. “It was cold and wet, a tough day to throw a baseball ... our pitchers at times pitched well. We’re slowly coming along.” Naughton was Pendleton’s top hitter in Game 2 going 2-for-3 with a run, three RBI and two walks, while Shaw Jerome had two RBI and Gabe Umbarger scored three runs. The two wins are the first of their season, and move Heppner’s record to 2-3 overall. The Mustangs will hope to carry their momentum to the Riverside/ Irrigon Tournament on Tuesday. SOFTBALL PILOT ROCK 18, VERNONIA 3 — At Pilot Rock, the Pilot Rock Rockets clubbed 15 hits to score 18 runs and thumped the Vernonia Loggers 18-3 on Friday in the Rocket Invitational. Kayla Deist had a team-best three hits for the Rockets (3-1), while Ayana Aguilar went 2-for-4 with a double and a triple and Sara Weinke went 2-for-3 with a triple. Aguilar also got the starting in the circle for the Rockets, and allowed just one hit, one run and two walks over four innings with five strikeouts. Hermiston’s lone match win of the day came at No. 1 singles, where Mackenzie Hill defeated Pasco’s Kendra Smith 6-3, 6-1. The Bulldogs did get into a pair of third set tiebreak situations, too. At No. 4 singles, Vanessa Bradshaw dropped the first set 6-3 and then took the second set 6-1 before falling 10-4 in a tiebreak.
