MAC-HI 11, DESALES
(WA) 1 — After an
extended break due to
Saturday’s
doubleheader
being canceled, the Mac-Hi
Pioneers returned to the
diamond with bats ablaze.
They played host to DeSales
(WA) on Tuesday afternoon
and handed the Irish a 11-1
loss that didn’t even make it
the full seven innings due to
the 10-run rule.
After DeSales was held
scoreless in the fifth, the
game was called and the
Pioneers move to 3-0 overall
early in the season.
“We came to play today.
We pitched, played defense,
and ran the bases hard,” head
coach Mark Michaud said.
Jesus Vela led all batters
with three RBI and went 3
for 3 on the afternoon, while
Esparza and Humbert each
chipped in two RBI apiece.
Cothey earned the win for
Mac-Hi Pioneers after three
innings of work. Cothey
gave up a lone run on three
hits while striking out three.

WESTON-MCEWEN
10, DUFUR 6 — After
two close losses, Weston-
McEwen pulled off its first
win of the season on the
road against Dufur by a 10-6
score.
Weston-McEwen (2-1)
was the first to score, bringing
in a lone run in the second
inning and then three more
in the third before Dufur put
itself in the game.
Garrett Shell doubled for
an RBI single for the Tiger-
Scots first run. In the next
inning, Dylan Cain was hit
by a pitch, which advanced
all runners and brought
Parker Munck home. Caden
Premus followed that up
with a ground out that gave
Travis Handley enough time
to score and Shell knocked
another RBI single to center
field to put Weston-McEwen
up 4-0.
The Rangers (2-1) scored
twice in the bottom of the
third inning to cut its deficit
to one run and to keep the
game close. But the Tiger-
Scots (1-2) continued to add
the their lead with runs in
the fourth, sixth and seventh
inning.
Up by 5-4 going into
the sixth, Weston-McEwen
brought home four batters
to go up 9-4 and solidify its
lead.
Dufur had some power
left but its single run innings
in the sixth and seventh
weren’t enough to get out of
the hole.
Shell led the TigerScots
with a perfect 3 for 3 day at
the plate with two doubles
and four RBI and Brett
Speed and Hendley each had
two hits.

RIVERSIDE
27,
DAYTON (WA) 17 —
After six innings of play
in Boardman, the 10-run
rule took effect when the
Riverside Pirates were up
27-17 over Dayton. The win
Tuesday is Riverside’s first
of the season. The Pirates
will hit the road to face White
Salmon on Friday before the
Riverside/Irrigon
Tourna-
ment next week.
SOFTBALL
PILOT ROCK 13,
WESTON-MCEWEN 6
— At Athena, the Pilot Rock
Rockets smacked three home
runs and five total extra-base
hits as they defeated the
Weston-McEwen
Tiger-
Scots 13-6 on Tuesday in a
non-league game.
Ayana Aguilar hit two
home runs for the Rockets
(2-1) — a two-run shot in
the first inning and a solo
homer in the fifth — and Sara
Weinke hit a two-run homer
to start the scoring in the first
inning. Aguilar also had an
okay game at pitcher, striking
out 10 in seven innings while
allowing nine hits, six runs
and one walk.
Jordyn Lambert and
Lilyan Duckett were the top
hitters for the TigerScots
(0-1), with Lambert going 2
for 4 with a double and a run
scored and Duckett 2 for 3
with a double, an RBI and a
run scored.
Lambert struggled in
her first time out at pitcher,
allowing seven hits, six walks
and 12 runs (seven earned) in
four innings. Duckett pitched
three innings of relief and

and one run allowed.

TENNIS
MILTON-FREEWATER
— On Tuesday, the Mac-Hi
boys and girls tennis teamed
opened league play on with
big wins over Riverside. The
boys defeated the Pirates 4-1,
and the girls won 6-2.
“I was very pleased on
how both teams played,”
head coach Danny Sanchez
said.
The only point the Pioneer
boys dropped was a doubles
match between Jose Sanchez
and Christian Reyes of
Riverside and Dylan Quist
and Alexis Perez of Mac-Hi.
Sanchez and Reyes held on
for an 8-3 win.
In singles, Mac-Hi only
allowed Riverside to take
five sets. Deazen Zerba
defeated Jose Sanchez 8-2
and Jamie Gomez won his
matched against Reyes, 8-3.
Mac-Hi’s Bryan Abrego
had the best outing of any
Pioneers and defeated Zach
McDonough 8-0.
For the girls, Janelle
Martinez, Jessica Hernandez
and Diana Moreno all picked
up singles wins for Mac-Hi
and giving up two sets at
most against the Pirates.
Riverside’s
Zulema
Gayton picked up one of
two wins for her team by
defeating Aspen Potter 8-1.
In doubles play, the
Pioneers handily defeated
Riverside in three of the
four matches. But Pirate pair
Jessica Calvillo and Gayton
turned the tables by defeated
Nicole Flores and Evelyn
Garcia of Mac-Hi, 8-4, for
Riverside’s second and final
point of the day.

SOUTHRIDGE
8,
PENDLETON 0 — At
Kennewick,
Washington,
the Pendleton girls tennis
team battled against an
experienced and talented
Southridge Suns lineup and
came up short to the tune of
an 8-0 loss on Tuesday.
“I saw a lot of improve-
ment on the court from the
Mac-Hi match,” Pendleton
coach Rocky Dillenburg said.
“We were moving around the
court better, our doubles pairs
were communicating better. I
liked the effort.”
Dillenburg said that
despite the sweep, numerous
games within each set on
Tuesday came down to
“multiple adds” and that
gaining the mental toughness
to pull those adds into Buck-
aroos’ favor as the season
goes along will be something
the team will focus on in
practice.
GOLF
THE DALLES — The
Hermiston
Bulldogs,
Heppner Mustangs and Pend-
leton Buckaroos competed at
The Dalles Invitational on
Tuesday at the The Dalles
Country Club.
The Mustangs took home
first place in the team scoring
with a score of 393, the only
sub-400 score of the six
schools that had full teams.
Sophie Grant had the low
score of 90 for the Mustangs,
followed by Sasha Keown
(97), Madison Combe (102),
Clair Grieb (103), Nicole
Propheter (103), and Cait-
lynn Scrivner (112).
Hermiston was third in the
team with 457, with Sonja
Peterson leading the way
with a 97. Following her was
Mykah Krumwiede (102),
Madison
McClannahan
(120), Bekah Miller (138),
and Leah Engelbrecht (148).
Pendleton had only three
girls competing, so they
did not qualify for the team
standings. However, junior
Megan George had the low
score of the day with an
88. Also competing for the
Buckaroos was Rylee Harris
(104) and Makenzie McLeod
(106).
