WRITING WORKSHOP: TURNING
PERSONAL EXPERIENCE INTO ART
with Penelope Scambly Schott
SATURDAY, 11:00 AM - 2:30 PM
APRIL 28TH
Writer Penelope Scambly Schott,
featured in last November’s First Draft
Writers Series, is back to offer this
very special workshop! In an ordinary
life, most of us experience extreme joy
or pain or other difficulties. There’s a
magic that comes from getting these
experiences onto paper. It takes
craftsmanship (or craftswomanship) to
go beyond saying “oh, wow!” or “poor
me” -- to celebrate the moment or
work toward living with our problems
and losses. In this workshop we
will write with full honesty and pay
close attention to choosing the most
expressive words possible. We will turn
life into art. Space is limited, advanced
registration is required.
There will be a short break for lunch
during class. Snacks will be available
however, we recommend bringing a
sack lunch.

DRAWING FUNDAMENTALS WITH
ARTIST SAM COLLETT
SATURDAY, NOON - 4:00 PM
MAY 12TH
In this introductory art class, you can
learn to draw what you see in the
world around you. The methods and
concepts presented in this workshop
are the foundations for drawing and
painting giving you the basic tools to
carry on your own work. The artist
and students will work together on a
drawing project as a group along with
individual instruction and practice time.
Materials will be included.
Artist Sam Collett is visiting us from
Joseph Oregon for this special, one-
day, fine art workshop. In addition to
a wide range of formal art education,
Mr. Collett has more than 20 years
of teaching experience. His beautiful
artwork has been exhibited around
the country and can be previewed
online at samcollettfineart.com. In
addition to instruction, you will have the
opportunity to view and discuss some
of his artwork and pick his brain about
how the landscapes of Eastern Oregon
have influenced his work.

GROWING HYDROPONIC
TOMATOES
with Richard Bertram
SATURDAY, 9:00 – 11:00 AM
APRIL 28TH
Hydroponic gardening is the art
of growing plants without soil.
Hydroponics is a very productive way
to grow food crops almost anywhere....
on your driveway, on your back porch,
in your basement, on your apartment
balcony. The focus of this class will
be to grow awesome tomatoes. The
hydroponic system that this class will
focus on is called the Double Dutch
Bucket Method. During the lab portion
of the class, we will construct a system,
plant it, and put it work. Please note:
there will be a short walk to an off-site
location during class.
Mr. Bertram is also offering to put
together an optional kit for students
who make a request well in advance.
This kit costs $115.00 and will provide
materials to get you started with your
own system. Once you have your
system, your costs next year will be
minimal. Please contact the Pendleton
Center for the Arts for more information
about this offer.
