The Oregon women are

first-round games for the NCAA
Tournament. The selection show
is on Monday.
“I know we’ll be there in full
support,” Cristobal told reporters
in Eugene before getting down
to football business.
Cristobal replaced Willie
Taggart, who bolted to take his
dream job at Florida State. The
team’s co-offensive coordi-
nator, Cristobal was hired soon
after Taggart left after players
publicly campaigned for him.
Cristobal’s debut as coach
came in the Las Vegas Bowl,
which the Ducks lost to Boise

season 7-6.

Serena Williams set for return to
pro tennis tour on Thursday
INDIAN WELLS, Calif. (AP) — Serena
Williams makes her return to the pro tour after a
14-month absence with a first-round match at the
BNP Paribas Open on Thursday.
She will play Zarina Diyas of
Kazakhstan in a night match at the
Indian Wells Tennis Garden.
Williams has played just one Fed
Cup doubles match while away from
the WTA Tour. The former world
No. 1 is unseeded and as a result did
not receive a first-round bye.

The new mother, who gave birth
in September, will try to become the first woman
to win three singles titles in the desert. Her other
titles came in 1999 and 2001 before she boycotted
the event for several years.
Williams, a winner of 23 Grand Slams, is in the
same bracket as older sister Venus. The siblings
could potentially face each other in the third round.
“Growing up, you figure
out really quickly how a
boy is supposed to act.
You learn what it takes
to ‘be a man.’ It’s like
a playbook: Be strong.
Don’t talk about your
feelings. Get through it on
your own. So for 29 years
of my life, I followed that
playbook.”

Gonzaga beats BYU to lock up
sixth straight WCC title
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Killian Tillie scored
22 points and No. 6 Gonzaga raced away to its
sixth straight West Coast Conference title with
a 74-54 victory over BYU on
Tuesday.
Gonzaga (30-4) appeared as
if it would lock into a defensive
battle with BYU (24-10). The
Zags turned it into a title-game
rout with a halftime-spanning 36-6 run to win
their 17th WCC title.
Zach Norvell Jr. had 17 points and the
Bulldogs held BYU to 35 percent shooting to
win their 17th straight WCC tournament game.
The dominant performance should boost
Gonzaga’s chances for a high NCAA Tournament
seed in what could be its last go-round in the
WCC. The Bulldogs are in talks about joining the
Mountain West Conference, possibly next season.
Yoeli Childs had 20 points for BYU.
