Page 4B SPORTS East Oregonian Friday, March 2, 2018 Men’s College Basketball No. 1 Virginia edges Louisville on Hunter’s buzzer-beater By GARY B. GRAVES Associated Press ACC LOUISVILLE, Ky. — De’Andre Hunter’s 3-pointer as time expired gave No. 1 Virginia a 67-66 victory over Louisville on Thursday night in a wild finish that made the Cavaliers the first Atlantic Coast Confer- ence team to go 9-0 on the road in league play. Needing everything to over- come an energized Cardinals squad desperate for a statement victory, the Cavaliers (27-2, 16-1) tied the game at 58 with 2 minutes left and overcame another five-point deficit in the final minute. Louisville led 66-64 and tried to inbounds with .9 seconds left, but Virginia got the ball after Deng Adel was called for traveling on the baseline. After a timeout, Hunter got the ball and sank a long 3 that banked in at the horn, sparking AP Photo/Timothy D. Easley Teammates swarm Virginia guard De’Andre Hunter (12) follow- ing his winning three-point basket over Louisville in an NCAA college basketball game on Thursday in Louisville, Ky. a wild dog pile of Cavaliers celebrating in front of Louisville bench. Ty Jerome scored 21 points while Devon Hall and Kyle Guy each had 10 and Hunter seven as Virginia became the first ACC team with perfect road league record since Duke (8-0) in the 2011-12 season. Adel had 18 points for Louis- ville (19-11, 9-8). BIG PICTURE Virginia: The Cavaliers didn’t #1 Virginia Louisville 67 66 flinch or fade despite trailing, and stuck with their game plan until getting a final chance that went through. Shooting 56 percent in the second half helped along with holding Louisville to 36 percent after halftime. They also outrebounded the Cardinals 34-27. Louisville: Facing a tall order against a Cavaliers squad that had beaten them five straight times, the Cardinals had their chances to seal it but missed free throws late before Adel’s turnover gave Virginia a final chance. With it went a golden opportunity to get the signature win they needed, one that they let slip away. PREPS: No. 5 Nixyaawii falls to No. 4 Triad Continued from 1B NO. 4 TRIAD 40, NO. 5 NIXYAAWII 38 — In the Class 1A quarterfinals, No. 4 Triad hit a buzz- er-beater to keep its run at a title alive while sending the No. 5 Nixyaawii Golden Eagles into the consolation bracket. The lay up at the buzzer by the Timberwolves (22-6) ended a close 32 minutes of play. At halftime, the game was tied, 18-18, and by the end of third quarter, Triad was up 28-25. The Golden Eagles (24-4) still had a lot of fight left and with two minutes on the clock, knotted the score up once again at 36 points apiece. But Triad’s late efforts were enough to send the Timberwolves through to face No. 1 Pacific in the semifinals. Nixyaawii will play No. 9 Hosanna Christian in the consolation semifinals. Tipoff is at 8 a.m. PLAYOFF PREVIEW: Pendleton, Hermiston boys on the road to face top-three seeds Continued from 1B to the finals in 2016, and are looking for their first taste at the playoffs since then. Silverton has held its opponents to as many as 52 points and as few as seven throughout its 21 wins. The Bulldogs have finally found their rhythm late in the season, winning 10 of their last 12 games including four consecutive wins that was capped off by a 67-40 play-in victory over St. Helens. Hermiston was booted out of the playoffs last year by a narrow 46-45 loss to Bend. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. BOYS BASKETBALL After winning the Columbia River Conference for the first time in four years, the Hermiston Bulldogs were essentially waiting to see who they would host for Round 1 of the 5A OSAA playoffs. More often than not, the winners of each conference will get home-court advan- tage unless that team falls outside of the top 16, which is what happened to Herm- iston when the brackets were released Wednesday. So now, the No. 15 seeded Bulldogs (12-11 overall) hit the road to face No. 2 Crater at 6 p.m. Friday. The Comets (23-1) are nearly perfect on the season with their lone loss nearly two months behind them. Crater opened league play on Jan. 5 with against Springfield, where the Millers handed the Comets a 19-point loss, 64-45. Of Craters 23 wins, only four have been decided by less than 10 points. Hermiston enters the matchup on a five-game win streak — its longest of the season. NO. 14 PENDLETON AT NO. 3 THURSTON — On Saturday, No. 14 Pend- leton will play for its ticket into the quarterfinals. After the Buckaroos’ 60-39 victory over Putnam in a play-in game Wednesday, they just have to get through the next 32 minutes. That’s the message head coach Kyle Tedder is sharing with his team in preparation for their postseason run. “Our guys have been there, they know what it takes, they know what it feels like to be there and now it’s a matter of making it happen,” Tedder said after Wednesday’s game. “The end goal is to get to the tournament because anything can happen once you’re, and I think we’re good enough to beat any team.” The Buckaroos (15-10 overall) will have their work cut out for them against the No. 3 Thurston Colts. Their roster has the expe- rience of six seniors, who are looking for redemption after getting bumped out of the playoffs with a Round 1 loss to Wilsonville last year.
