COMING EVENTS
Diverse writers to headline First Draft
East Oregonian
A pair of authors with diverse back-
grounds are featured during February’s
First Draft Writers’ Series.
Ruby Hansen Murray and Dawn
Pichon Barron will read from their
works Thursday at 7 p.m. at Pendleton
Center for the Arts, 214 N. Main St. The
event is free and open to the public.
A writer and photographer, Murray
is a citizen of the Osage Nation from
the Hominy District. She lives along the
Columbia River.
Murray earned a master’s degree
from The Institute of American Indian
Arts in Santa Fe. She offers creative
writing workshops in a variety of
settings, including writers’ conferences,
cultural gatherings and all grade levels
in schools.
She received the 2017 Montana
Nonfiction Prize and was awarded
fellowships at Ragdale (near Chicago),
the Virginia Center for the Creative
Murray
Barron
Arts and Fishtrap (in Wallowa County).
Murray’s work appears in “World Liter-
ature Today,” “The Rumpus,” “Yellow
Medicine Review,” “Indian Country
Today” and “As/Us.”
Barron describes herself as a mixed
blood — Indixicana/white — writer and
educator, wife and mother, and fighter
for social justice. She is currently the
director/faculty of the Native Pathways
Program at the Evergreen State College
in Olympia, Washington.
Barron’s chapbook, “Escape Girl
Blues,” was released in January. In
addition, her work has appeared or is
forthcoming in Barrelhouse (ALPHA
blog), “Yellow Medicine Review,”
Pontoon, Pittsburgh Poetry Review,
“Washington 129 Poetry Anthology,”
“Of A Monstrous Child Anthology,” No
News Today and The Olympian.
Showcasing notable Pacific North-
west authors, First Draft Writers’ Series
meets the third Thursday of each month.
It celebrates writing and provides
an opportunity for people in Eastern
Oregon to engage in discussions about a
variety of topics. In addition to the main
presentation, the gatherings provide
time for up to 10 local writers to share
from their original works during an
open mic.
For more information about the
writers’ series, call 541-278-9201 or
visit www.pendletonarts.org. To learn
more about the authors, visit www.
rubyhansenmurray.com or search www.

HERMISTON
Scholarship fundraiser
springs into fashion
East Oregonian
More than three dozen
models were stylin’ during
a Saturday fundraiser at Our
Lady of Angels Catholic
Church in Hermiston.
The annual Catholic
Daughters
Valentine’s
Luncheon & Style Show
raises money for the Marilyn
Harris Memorial Scholar-
ship. Money is awarded to
a pair of local graduating
seniors each spring during
a Baccalaureate Mass at the
Hermiston church.
Gracing the runway
were 37 models of all ages,
said regent Kristi Smalley
of Catholic Daughters of
the Americas Court No.
1692. They showed off the
latest spring fashions from
Bealls, Maurice’s, Smitty’s
Ace Hardware, Andee’s
Boutique, Lucky Endz Gifts
and LuLaRoe by Mandi
Bedolla.
With more than 125
people
in
attendance,
Smalley was thrilled by the
support. People enjoyed a
variety of homemade salads
and decadent desserts, she
said. In addition, Hermiston
High School freshman Marti
Plum sang the national
anthem to help open the
event.
“The local Catholic
Daughters are extremely
grateful for the support of
this annual event,” Smalley
said.

ters or other activities at the
