—
Nine
players got into the score-
book for Nixyaawii as the
Golden Eagles thumped the
Echo Cougars on Tuesday
night.
Mick Schimmel led the
Golden Eagles (17-3 overall,
10-1 OOL) with a game-high
26 points, while Quanah
Picard had 11 and both
Deven Barkley and Dazan
Sigo had 10 apiece.
“We shot the ball well and
we spread the ball around
pretty good,” Nixyaawii
coach Shane Rivera said.
“And the score doesn’t indi-
cate it, but Echo is a pretty
good team. They played a
good game. It was a good
win for us, to bounce back
from the loss on Saturday.”
Charlie White led the
Cougars (8-14, 5-6) with 13
points, Deven Craig had 11
and Morgan Marcum added
10.

BUCKAROOS: Outscored Dawgs 33-20 in second half
A minute later, senior
Andrew James knocked
the team’s first 3-pointer
since the first quarter to put
the Bulldogs up 39-38.
With 2:22 left in
the game, senior Cesar
Ortiz — who is normally
knocking down multiple
three’s a night — hit his
lone bucket to again put
Hermiston up by one,
42-41.
After Ortiz’s three,
Hermiston’s next shot
would come too late. The
Bulldogs were down by
seven points when junior
Jordan Ramirez split
defenders for a lay-in in
the last four seconds of the
game, and by then Pend-
leton had already secured
its 15th consecutive CRC
win.
Hermiston will travel
to The Dalles for a 7 p.m.
tipoff Friday, while the
Bucks will return home
and host Hood River
Valley at 7 p.m. Friday.

Tedder said.
The Bulldogs (7-10,
2-1) would hold on to that
lead entering halftime up
24-18.
Junior Ryne Andreason
helped Hermiston extend
its advantage by scoring
11 of his 15 points in the
first half. He finished with
a team-best performance,
and was the only player on
Hermiston’s roster to reach
double digits.
Turnovers and missed
free throws were hurting
the Buckaroos in the first
half and despite matched
Hermiston’s
11-point
performance in the second,
they still found themselves
down by six at the break.
“A lot of it was known
their
personnel
and
knowing where there
shooters are,” Tedder said
of the team’s halftime
adjustments.
The new found focus
helped the Bucks return
and outscore the Bulldogs
15-4 in the third quarter.
Pendleton
switched
from zone to man defense,
and forced Hermiston into
some uncomfortable shots.
The uncharacteristically
missed three’s and then
struggling to stop the
Bucks in transition hurt
the Bulldogs’ chances of
handing Pendleton its first
league loss since 2016.
“It’s all about knowing
who you’re playing against
and what their strengths
are and taking them away,”
Tedder added.
Hermiston tried and
succeed in taking its
lead back in the final five
minutes of play. Sopho-
more Andrew Earl came
off the bench a hit all three
of his free throws after
senior Shaw Jerome fouled
him on an attempt behind
the arc. The three-point
play tied the score at 36-36.

THRILLER: Dawgs led
36-32 after three quarters
Continued from 1B
to outscore Pendleton 15-9 in
the second.
Senior Hannah Thompson
capped off the run by making
two clutch free throws before
the teams headed to the
locker rooms.
“At halftime we said we
needed to keep pushing, and
keep playing and not give
up,” Thompson said. “We
worked our way back up and
we were proud of that, but
then we said, ‘Okay, we need
to keep doing that and not
give up.”
Coming out of the break,
Hermiston again had the
advantage over Pendleton,
and increased its lead to
36-32 going into the final
quarter.
It wasn’t for a lack of
effort that the game slipped
away from the Bulldogs, as
kept the pressure on Pend-
leton in the final seconds to
force a turnover and attempt
a game-tying 3-pointer.
Thompson’s shot from the
edge of the arc missed, rico-
cheting off the rim to give
the ball back to the Bucks for
their final point of the game.
“We were proud of
ourselves, because we didn’t
give up,” Thompson said.
“We could have easily hung
our heads and said we were
down and just stop playing,
but we stayed in the game
and kept playing and we kept
it close.”
Hermiston will try to
rebound from the loss when
the Bulldogs host The Dalles
at 7 p.m. on Friday.
Pendleton will continue
its road trip Friday with a
game in Hood River.
