SPORTS Saturday, January 27, 2018 East Oregonian PHS: Bucks score 60 in the paint PREPS: Ione girls win fifth straight, Rockets earn first league victory Continued from 1B struggled with his jump shot, going 0 for 4 from 3-point range, but he was a mismatch for the Riverhawks defense and dribbled through and around their defense all night to score 22 of his points in the paint. “I was just taking what they were giving me,” Newsom said. “Getting to the hoop is what I’m best at, so I just kept going in.” The Buckaroos’ entire team found success in the paint, with 60 of the their 78 points coming from inside at an incredible 68 percent (31 for 45) success rate. “That was huge for us,” Tedder said of the efficiency inside. “We’re committed to pounding the paint and we’re starting to commit to all the things we gotta do to win games. We just have to continue to do that and continue to get better now.” The Riverhawks (8-8, 0-2) did most of their offensive damage from 3-point range, as they sank 11 for the game and made 11 field goals inside the arc. Jacob Hernandez led the team with 18 points and was 4 for 6 from three and Josh Nisbet had 15 points and was 3 for 3 from three. The Riverhawks’ sharp- shooting helped them with a scoring surge to star the second half, as three straight makes from deep vaulted them into a 43-42 lead with 4:35 left in the third quarter. It was their first lead since a 12-11 advantage late in the first quarter. “We came out a little slow and didn’t get to their shooters in time,” Newsom said. “But then we picked it up and cruised from there.” Pendleton immediately grabbed the lead back 45-43 on a 3-pointer by Dakota Sams from the top of the key and then led 55-46 at the end of the quarter before cruising in the fourth. “Games evolve over the course of 32 minutes,” Tedder said, “and it’s how you adjust to things over the course of that time. I thought we did a great job, especially in the third and fourth quarter, strong against the visiting Wallowa Cougars. Helix got off to a 15-9 lead in the first quarter, but then followed it up with a two-point performance in the second to give Wallowa a lead it would never relinquish, and the Cougars (9-10 overall, 4-6 Old Oregon League) took the game 49-36. The Cougars’ top shooter, junior Christopher Nobles was held scoreless, but they got a big perfor- mance out of senior Sam Hilliard, who scored a game-high 28 points. The Grizzlies (3-16, 2-7) were led by Gavin Newtson with 16 points. whose presence inside has been a big reason for Herm- iston’s success, Rodriguez is now able to dig even deeper into his bench to help stall an athletic team like Hood River. “They’re an athletic team, surprisingly athletic, and they do a lot of things well but they use their athleticism and to get to the basket,” Rodriguez said. When the teams returned to the floor there was no stopping the Bulldogs, who had given up nine points to Hood River’s biggest threat, senior Lauren Orr. They held Hood River to only three points in the third quarter, while scoring 18 themselves. “The biggest adjustment was to just keep them in front and forcing them to pass, which is where they struggled a little bit,” Rodriguez added. “When we were able to do that, then they started turning the ball over, they couldn’t score as well and that’s where we had the advantage.” Junior Maddie Wilson was the most effective in the third, scoring half of her 10 points to boost Hermiston’s lead to 42-26. Much like free throws, earlier in the season Hermiston struggled with confidence and ECHO 32, PINE EAGLE 29 — At Echo, the Cougars held off a furious second-half charge by Pine Eagle to hang on for a three-point victory on Friday night. Echo (7-13 overall, 2-7 OOL) led 20-4 at halftime, but the Spartans outscored the Cougars 25-12 in the second half. Marti Huff led Echo with 15 points and nine rebounds and Rachel McCarty had seven points, with both players playing all 32 minutes of the game. Sammy Pollock led the Spartans (2-14, 0-9) with 15 points. PENDLETON 62, THE DALLES 33 — At The Dalles, all 12 Pendleton Buckaroos saw the floor and all but two scored points as the Buckaroos beat down The Dalles Riverhawks 62-33 on Friday night to stay perfect in league play. Kalan McGlothan led all scorers with 18 points while adding seven rebounds and Jaiden Lemberger finished with 10 points for the Buckaroos (11-6 overall, 2-0 CRC). Behind them, Maureen Davies had eight points and five rebounds, Katie Bradt had seven points and six rebounds, and Hunter Kiele had a team-high eight rebounds. Jodi Thomasian led the Riverhawks (6-10, 0-2) with 11 points. of responding and letting them know who the better squad is right now.” And while Newsom’s game grabbed the headline, a few Buckaroos put together solid contributions. Richard Scott had 11 points with six rebounds, Ryan Russell had eight points and 11 rebounds, Willie Camp had six points and nine boards, and Sams had 10 points and five assists. Now, Pendleton turns its focus to Tuesday night when it travels to Hermiston, who beat Hood River 77-74 on Friday, with its win streak on the line and the Buckaroos are ready for the fight. “Oh yeah, we’re always ready,” Newsom said with a smile. ———— Staff photo by Kathy Aney Pendleton’s Ryan Russell (24) goes up for a shot as Dakota Murr, of The Dalles, defends Friday at Warberg Court. putting together a full four quarters of play. With the four consecutive wins, the Bulldogs’ confidence is up and as of late, they have been aggressive until the final buzzer. Hermiston again increased its lead with the aid of Wilson. The Bulldogs held the Eagles scoreless with 5:20 left on the clock, and had their bench come in to play the final two minutes of the game. Sophomore Jazlyn Romero, as well as the other starters, got a round of applause as they took the bench. Romero led the team with a game-high 15 points. Thomas pitched in 10 points along with Wilson. For Hood River, Orr finished with a team-best of 10 points, while the rest of the Eagles were held to single digits. Hermiston will continue its homestand on Tuesday when Pendleton comes to town for a doubleheader. The Eagles (17-0, 8-0 Old Oregon League) remain perfect on the season by completely dominated the Leopards (7-10, 3-5). Cove’s top scorer, senior Maggie Ledbetter, only netted six points and the team was held to no more than eight points for all four quarters. For Nixyaawii, it was sound passing and balanced scoring that led to a breakout 41-16 lead at the half, and helped in reaching the 47-point victory. Seniors Mary Stewart and EllaMae Looney followed Schimmel with 13 and 11 points, respec- tively. IONE 62, ARLINGTON 23 — After Ione came off a big 65-20 win over Arlington on Tuesday, the Cardinals faced the Honkers again days later to nearly mirror that same victory. Against a injury ridden team, Ione defeated Arlington 62-23 to push its win streak to five games and remain undefeated in the Big Sky League. “The girls are rolling,” head coach Nathan Heideman said. “Their confidence is through the roof.” The Cardinals (7-11 overall, 6-2 BSL) were led by senior Maggie Flynn, who scored 13 points, and received help from sophomore Mackenzie Heideman and senior Morgan Orem who each scored 12. The Honkers (1-10, 0-8) were held to single digits in all four quarters, but junior Sara Grady was able to knock down 10 points to lead Arlington. HHS: Bulldogs shut down Eagles in the fourth Continued from 1B played really well together as a team.” The game was close after the first quarter, with Pilot Rock (11-8 overall, 1-3 CBC) up 14-10, but the Rockets then held the Tigers (2-17, 0-4) to only four points — all of which came from free throws — in the second quarter and ran away with the game from there. And rightfully so after they held the visiting Culver Bulldogs to only five points in the second half to remain undefeated in their league. Weston-McEwen was led by senior Chelsea Quaempts, who scored 15 points for the Tiger- Scots (12-6 overall, 3-0 Columbia Basin Confer- ence). They have now won six straight. The Bulldogs (11-7, 2-1) came out tough, following Weston-McEwen by only two points at the end of the first quarter, 17-15. But then couldn’t find the same looks after the first eight minutes. Junior Irma Retano was Culver’s top shooter with 12 points.
