Buckaroos extended their
win streak in the CRC to 14
games following Friday’s
78-62 victory over The
Dalles at Warberg Court.
Pendleton’s last league loss
came way back on Feb. 12,
2016, when they fell at home
to rival Hermiston.
“We have guys that are
fierce competitors and know
what’s on the line in these
games and love that feeling,”
Pendleton coach Kyle Tedder
said afterward. “They want to
play for something and now
every game is so meaningful
and the guys just step up in
big games. That’s what good
players and good teams do.”
The Buckaroos (10-7
overall, 2-0 CRC) had
another big night from junior
Tyler Newsom, as the junior
finished with a game-high
27 points, 10 rebounds
and six assists. Newsom

PILOT ROCK — It was an emotional
night in Pilot Rock as the Rockets hosted
a doubleheader and took that time to
honor the family of Liam Flanagan, an
8-year-old boy who passed away Saturday
after an eight-day battle with a rare flesh-
eating bacteria.
Students were decked out in camo,
and even the visiting Stanfield Tigers paid
their respects before the game. In the end,
it was a big win for the Rockets, 60-38
over the Tigers, their sixth straight overall.
Seniors Levi Thieme (23 points), Chris
Weinke (13), Bryson Pierce (12) and Riley
Lankford (10) all scored in double digits.
Thieme, Weinke and Pierce also had seven
rebounds apiece for the Rockets (13-6
overall, 4-0 Columbia Basin Conference).
The Tigers (8-12, 1-3) were led by
junior Elias Esquivel and senior Brody
Woods each with 11 points each.

HERMISTON 77, HOOD RIVER
VALLEY 74 — At Hood River, Herm-
iston overcame a sloppy first half in Hood
River and defeated the Eagles 77-74 on
Friday night.
“We’ll take the win on the road,” head
coach Casey Arstein said. “It was a good
team effort.”
Junior Ryne Andreason led the Bull-
dogs (7-9 overall, 2-0 CRC) with 17
points. Sophomore Andrew Earl followed
with 15. Junior Cesar Ortiz ended the
night with 14, and Ramirez pitched in 12.
The Eagles (5-12, 0-2) opened the
game with a 17-10 lead behind one of
their top scorers of the night, senior Jonah
Tactay — who had six points in the first
quarter, and finished with 12 behind junior
Carson Flores (18).
Hermiston began to turn things around
in the second quarter, scoring 22 points to
cut its deficit to 33-32 at the break.
Hood River came out and knocked
down 25 third-quarter points, but the
Bulldogs responded with 29 of their own
in the fourth quarter to take and hold their
lead.

Hermiston is now
2-0 in league after

HERMISTON — It
had been a while since the
Hermiston girls basketball
team was riding a win streak.
The Bulldogs hadn’t put up
three or more consecutive
wins since February of
2017, but after back-to-back
wins against La Grande
and a league opening win
in The Dalles, Hermiston
was beginning to shake its
preseason woes.
Now, the wins are
beginning to pile up as the
Bulldogs take their fourth
straight victory with a 56-34
win over Hood River Valley
in the Dawg House. Despite
the cleanup Hermiston has
to do in order to vie for the

top spot in the league, the
Bulldogs (6-11 overall, 2-0
Columbia River Conference)
remain undefeated in confer-
ence play and for the first
time have some momentum
as they get into the brunt of
their league schedule.
“It’s a confidence booster
and we were able to win
a game where we didn’t
necessarily play well,” head
coach Juan Rodriguez said.
“We did what we needed to
and those are the types games
we’re going to have. I just
told the girls that it being our
last year in this league, every
team is going to give us their
best shot because they want
to beat us and not many
teams have.”
It was Hermiston’s first
league game at home, but
despite the advantage it took
a while for the Bulldogs to
get settled.
The Eagles (8-8, 0-2)
knocked down three of the
last four made baskets in the
first quarter to build a 15-12
lead over the Bulldogs.
Hermiston’s good defen-
sive pressure at the start of
the half forced six Hood
River turnovers, but the
Eagles were able to hold on
to the ball in the final three
minutes to have one of its
only leads of the night.
Senior Maddy Juul —
who played her first game
since the start of the season,
and finished the game with
five points — sank some free
throws to put the Bulldogs
within striking distance.
For a team that has strug-
gled from the charity stripe,
Hermiston was able to make
six of its nine free throws late
in the second quarter to enter
the break up 24-23.
Having Juul back in the
rotation and coming of the
bench is a different roll for
the CRC’s reigning Player of
the Year.
“For me, having her
come of the bench as a sixth
player, that doesn’t happen
very often,” Rodriguez said.
“Obviously we’d like her to
play a lot more, but with her
knee we just want to have her
play for the rest of the season.
... Being able to bring her in
to back up Jordan (Thomas)
is a little bit of a luxury,
even though she is a little bit
hobbled.”

BOULDER, Colo. (AP) — For slightly
more than a half, No. 7-ranked Oregon received
a test from unranked Colorado.
And were able to withstand a
challenge they anticipated.
Ruthy Hebard had 20 points
and nine rebounds to help
Oregon beat Colorado 74-55 on
Friday night.
“Our coaches remind us that any time we
walk on the floor, (it’s) with a target on our
back,” Hebard said. “Teams will give us their
best game and that comes with being a good
team.”
Sabrina Ionescu, the Pac-12’s leading scorer,
added 14 points for Oregon (19-3, 8-1 Pac-12),
winners of 11 of its last 12. Satou Sabally
