COMMUNITY East Oregonian Page 6A Thursday, January 25, 2018 HERMISTON BRIEFLY Fundraiser dinner cruises with nautical theme By TAMMY MALGESINI East Oregonian The community is invited to “Come Sail Away With Us” during the Hermiston Educa- tion Foundation’s annual Beach & Beef Fundraiser. In its ninth year, the event features a cruise ship theme. Although it’s not required, foundation treasurer Tori Espinosa said people are invited to have fun and be creative in dressing up. Be sure to grab a boarding pass for the Feb. 3 event, which is being held at the Hermiston Community Center, 415 S. Highway 395. The doors open at 5 p.m., offering guests an opportunity to bid on silent auction items and mingle with others. The dinner, which includes all-you-can-eat crab and steak kabobs, starts at 5:45 p.m. The live auction kicks off at 7 p.m. In addition, there will be a no-host bar. Live entertainment will be provided by the Hermiston High School jazz band. This year’s event is Feb. 3 at the Hermiston Community Center. on deck as student groups assist with serving, acting as runners during the auction and other tasks, Espinosa said. The event provides an opportunity for performing community service hours, she said. “We really want to stay true to supporting the students and helping them in all ways,” Espinosa said. “Also, we like to have the students because we feel they are very respon- sible.” A separate entity from the Hermiston School District, the nonprofit foundation awards grants to district staff Agape House pedals bikes, furniture and more for projects or equipment to enhance the educational experience of students. Since 2003, they have disbursed $300,000 in grant awards that help support such activities as attending conferences or going on educational field trips, providing supplies for drama performances and purchasing musical instru- ments, technology equipment or special curriculum. In addition, this past spring the foundation awarded $2,500 scholarships to six graduating seniors. Tickets are $35 each. They are available in advance at the Hermiston School District office, 305 S.W. 11th St.; the Hermiston Chamber of Commerce, located at Corner- stone Plaza, 1055 S. Bins of knick-knacks are you-name-the-price, furniture and bicycles are as marked and clothing is five items for $1. The event is Saturday from 8:30-11:30 a.m. at 500 Harper Road, Hermiston. In case of inclement weather, the sale will be held indoors. Donations will be accepted through Friday. Agape House serves individuals and families in need. Alzheimer’s Association provides support for family, caregivers Emotional support and resources are available for family, friends and caregivers for people with dementia. The Alzheimer’s Association coordinates groups that connect people to develop mutual support, provide additional education and discuss problem- solving techniques.
