DAYS GONE BY BEETLE BAILEY GARFIELD BY MORT WALKER BY JIM DAVIS 100 Years Ago From the East Oregonian Jan. 15-16, 1918 Owing to the fact he is short of blanks required in filling out income and profit tax returns from men of heavy earnings, William Kennedy, deputy internal revenue collector, who has offices at the court house during the month is anxious to have men with incomes under $5000 a year call on him during the next few days so he may dispose of their cases. All single men with incomes over $1000 and all married men with incomes over $2000 per year are required to make returns. Exemptions are allowed men with children, there being an exemption of $200 per child. 50 Years Ago From the East Oregonian Jan. 15-16, 1968 Bows, arrows, finger gloves and more valued at about $200 were stolen from a shed on the Round-Up grounds near the Memorial Armory used to store Blue Mountain Commu- nity College archery supplies, according to city police. The theft was reported by Don Phillips, BMCC coach, who was informed by James Wilson, Round-Up grounds caretaker, that a hasp had been broken on the shed door. Phillips said some damage also was done to some equipment not stolen. 25 Years Ago From the East Oregonian Jan. 15-16, 1993 Snow depths reached 15 inches in areas of Pendleton on Thursday, one of the deepest measurements in the snow-covered Columbia Basin. Thursday’s snowfall varied between 1 and 5 inches depending on the area — with Heppner the lowest at 1 inch and Hermiston, the normal dry spot in Umatilla County, taking the most with 5 inches of new snow. Administrators for some Umatilla County schools this morning decided snow condi- tions warranted canceling classes, giving students a four-day weekend because of the Martin Luther King holiday Monday. In 1865, Union Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman decreed that 400,000 acres of land in the South would be divided into 40-acre lots and given to former slaves. (The order, later revoked by President Andrew Johnson, is believed to have inspired the expression, “Forty acres and a mule.”) In 1920, Prohibition began in the United States as the 18th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution took effect, one year to the day after its ratification. (It was later repealed by the 21st Amendment.) In 1935, fugitive gangster Fred Barker and his mother, Kate “Ma” Barker, were killed in a shootout with the FBI at Lake Weir, Florida. In 1942, actress Carole Lombard, 33, her mother, Elizabeth, and 20 other people were killed when their plane crashed near Las Vegas, Nevada, while en route to California from a war-bond promotion tour. In 1957, three B-52’s took off from Castle Air Force Base in California on the first non-stop, round-the- world flight by jet planes, which lasted 45 hours and 19 minutes.
