In a press release, the city announced it will hire Liam Hughes, executive director of the Sisters Parks and Recreation District, as the next director of Hughes the Pendleton Parks and Recreation Department. City Manager Robb Corbett touted Hughes’ experience in Sisters, a growing community of 2,000 people about 20 miles north of Bend. In an interview Thursday, Hughes said Sisters’ system is heavy on recreation but light on parks. He said he is excited to work in a place with as many parks and facilities as Pendleton. “Liam will be a great fit for Pendleton,” Corbett said in a statement. “We want to grow our recreation programs available to the community and improve our ability to efficiently maintain our parks and other public places. In his current position, he walked into a financially difficult situation and completely turned it around using very innovative ideas.” Hughes was picked out of 21 other candidates from across the country to lead the department, which oversees a combined $2.7 million budget from the general fund and approximately 29 positions. In addition to 22 parks, the department is responsible for operating and maintaining the Pendleton Recreation Center, the Pendleton Aquatic Center and Olney Cemetery. Hughes replaces Donnie Cook, who is retiring from the director job after 26 years with the department, the last two as director. A native of Essex, England, Hughes graduated from Oregon State University and has previous experience with the Newport Parks and Recreation Department. He spent the past four years leading the Sisters Parks and Recreation District and has served on the board of the Oregon Recreation and Park Association as president of the recreational sports section. Hughes is expected to start Feb. 1 and will earn $80,268 to start. ——— Contact Antonio Sierra at asierra@eastoregonian.com or 541-966-0836. Following a year with an unusual amount of public activism, one of Pendleton’s first protests of the year had an unusual target: the Salvation Army. Several picketers stood in front of The Salvation Army Church of Pendleton at 150 S.E. Emigrant Ave. on Wednesday and waved signs about the reduction of lunch services at the church. Pastor Ricky Scruggs, the church’s leader, said the protest was due to a disgruntled employee and a misunder- standing over a temporary closure. Scruggs said the Salvation Army offers a free daily lunch six days per week, a service that averages 40-70 people per day. Earlier this week, Scruggs said staff needed to do a deep clean of their facilities Monday through Wednesday. Without a cook since just before Thanks- giving, he said the organization didn’t have the staff to remain open but resumed lunch services on Wednesday. It’s a struggle to keep Staff photo by E.J. The Salvation Army recently hired a new cook who is scheduled to start next week. A lack of cooks can make operating a nonprofit food service difficult. When the Active Senior Center of Pendleton went an extended period of time without a cook, the organization temporarily stopped their four-day-a-week lunch service for a month while they continued to search for a replacement. Scruggs said the protest was organized by a former employee who has been speaking out against the Salvation Army since she was let go. When the group picketed on Wednesday, Scruggs said they brought sandwiches out to the protesters and told them the closure was only temporary to no avail. -Presbyterian Church (USA)- 201 SW Dorion Ave. Pendleton Service of Worship - 10:00 am Children’s Sunday School - 10:20 am Fellowship - 11:00 am www.pendletonpresbyterian.com By TAMMY MALGESINI East Oregonian Knights of Columbus dish up breakfast Faith Center Church Worshiping God Loving People 108 S. While pleasing the palate, the event also raises money for community services through Our Lady of Angels Catholic Church. In its second year, the Traditional Polish Dinner is Saturday, Jan. 20 from 5:30-7 p.m. in the church’s parish hall, 565 W. Hermiston Ave., Hermiston. The meal also includes soup, salads and desserts. “Come join us for a great meal and fellowship,” said Mark Gomolski. “If you never had Polish food, come and try it. You will be surprised.” With limited seats available, Gomolski encourages people to buy tickets early as the inaugural event sold out in advance. They are $15 each and are available by calling 541-567-5812 or stopping by the church office. Faith-based conference pursues revival Worship Community FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH Polish dinner benefits community services HERMISTON Live music, top-notch performances and inspirational speakers are featured during a faith-based conference in Hermiston. In its sixth year, the focus of the event is “Revival in Now.” Pursuit Conference 2018 is Friday, Jan. 19 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, Jan. 20 with sessions at 10 a.m., 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. The event is being held at the Hermiston Assembly of God Church, 730 E. Hurlburt Ave. There is no admission charge. Rev. Terry Haight said the event sprouted at the urging of his son, Clayton, who was a junior in high school at the time, and some of his buddies. The teens, Haight said, were wanting events that were geared more towards the younger generations. Despite the initial focus, Haight said the conference continues to draw people of all ages who are hungering for more. People are interested in a deeper connection with their faith, he said, and are looking for additional ways to worship God beyond attending church and being good people.
