SPORTS Wednesday, January 10, 2018 East Oregonian Page 3B BUCKS: Dominated La Grande in nearly every statistical category Pendle- ton’s Tyler Newsome goes for a rebound contest- ed by La Grande’s Kaden Chandler in the Bucks’ 63-46 win against the Tigers in Tuesday in Pendle- ton. Continued from 1B with three straight wins following Tuesday’s 63-46 victory over the La Grande Tigers at Warberg Court. “I think we’re fortunate to have the schedule we do,” Pendldeton head coach Kyle Tedder said of his rested squad. “When you have days off you utilize them well and that’s the goal. Trying to get guys healthy, a lot of guys and coaches have been sick and banged up, so it’s a good opportunity for us to get back on track, get a lot of shots up and focus on some areas we need to improve on.” The Buckaroos (7-6) used their fresh legs to take the advantage on the Tigers (8-6) early and led 20-7 after the fi rst eight minutes. Junior Tyler Newsom, who has emerged as Pendleton’s next star, was unstoppable to start as he scored all but six of his team’s points in the fi rst quarter and had 21 of the team’s 31 points in the fi rst half, which was not surprising to his coach. “I think Tyler’s going to impose his will when he wants to, because he’s a special offensive player,” Tedder said. At halftime with Pendleton up 31-26, only three Buckaroos had etched points into the scorebook — including Newsom, Dakota Sams (6 points) and Richard Staff photo by E.J. Harris Scott (4 points) — as Pendleton’s secondary scorers and bench players struggled to hit shots. For the game, those three domi- nated the stat sheet as Newsom fi nished with a game-high 25 points with 13 rebounds, Sams added 14 points and eight rebounds and Scott fi nished with 12 points and fi ve boards. The remaining eight Buckaroos that saw the fl oor combined for just 12 points. Afterwards, Tedder said he wasn’t concerned about the unbal- anced scoring effort from the team. He was more concerned about the high number of turnovers, which has become a trend for the Buck- aroos. “I think the reason we have our ups and downs is the turnover margin,” he said. “We had 23 turn- overs in the game, back-to-back game with 20-plus (turnovers) is something we have to fi x. Take 10 of those away, it adds 10 posses- sions and it’s a totally different game.” La Grande kept the game close to start the third quarter until the Buckaroos’ stingy defense and activity in the paint simply wore them down. The Buckaroos quickly took the lead from six to 15 points with 2:07 left in the third quarter, and then led by as much as 20 points at 57-37 early in the fourth quarter. “I thought we controlled our tempo and played even-keeled for 32 minutes,” Tedder said. “We turned it on in the second half and had a great third quarter and didn’t let much get to us.” Pendleton proved it was the better team, and dominated La Grande in most statistical catego- ries. The Buckaroos out-rebounded the Tigers 44-24, scored 32 points in the paint to the Tigers’ 22, and out-shot the Tigers at the free throw line (Buckaroos 13-of-16, Tigers 6-of-19) and out-shot the Tigers by nearly 10 percent overall. It was the type of performance that Tedder was happy to see out of his group as they now prepare for one fi nal non-league game before league play starts up on Jan. 18. “Guys are battling, trying to get better every day and now we have another nice week off to address some things and get better and get healthy to be feeling good going into league next week,” Tedder said. “I think the message is clear, and the guys are ready to work, we just have to put in the work and be ready.” ———— LHS 7 19 10 10 — 46 PHS 20 11 22 10 — 63 LA GRANDE — N. PREP ROUNDUP: Weston-McEwen boys, girls earn wins over Mac-Hi Continued from 1B ECHO 54, STANFIELD 45 — At Stanfi eld, senior Marti Huff led Echo to a 54-45 victory over Stanfi eld. The win came during a short league break where the Cougars (5-9 overall, 1-3 Old Oregon League) had lost three straight games. The Tigers (2-11) where entering the game off a nail-biting win over Stanfi eld. They were able to over- come the 30-plus turnovers in that game. But on Tuesday night hosting Echo, they weren’t so lucky. Behind Huff, junior Kylee Murstig tallied 10 points. For Stanfi eld, sophomore Kendra Hart led the team with 17 points, while fellow sophomore Savannah Sharp pitched in 13 points. Echo will have one more away game before returning home, a 6 p.m. showdown on Friday in Powder Valley. Stanfi eld will travel to Heppner on Friday for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff. ——— EHS 12 14 15 13 — 54 SHS 13 10 15 7 — 45 ECHO — M. Huff 28, K. Murstig 10, L. Cox 3, E. Brown 2, A. Putman 2, R. McCarty 1. WESTON-MCEWEN MAC-HI 30 — Weston-McEwen started a three-game road trip Tuesday with a big win over Mac-Hi. The 55-30 victory was thanks in part to three double-digit performances from the TigerScots (7-6). Senior captains Alyssa Finifrock and Chelsea Quaempts each scored 13 points, and junior Katie Vescio followed with 12 of her own. The win is Weston-McEwen’s sixth in its last seven games, and will give the TigerScots momentum heading into league play Saturday. For the Pioneers (2-12 overall, 0-1 GOL), senior Brianna Hernandez led with 12 points. Mac-Hi held on to a very narrow one-point led after the fi rst quarter, but couldn’t put together another double-digit quarter for the remainder of the game. Weston-McEwen will face Heppner at 5:30 p.m. Saturday. Mac-Hi hopes to break its skid with a trip to La Grande on Friday. ——— W-E 14 8 15 18 — 55 M-H 15 8 4 3 — 30 WESTON-MCEWEN — A. Finifrock 13, C. The Knights (2-11 overall, 2-1 Big Sky League) struggled their entire season until picking up their fi rst win in league play last week. They added their second victory just four days later and threaten Class 1A BSL leader Horizon Christian, Hood River. For the Honkers (1-4, 0-2), they are currently riding a four-game losing streak after opening their season with a win on New Years Day. Condon/Wheeler will stay on the road and travel to Sherman for a 6 p.m. tipoff Friday, while Arlington heads to Dufur for a 6 p.m. matchup Friday. BOYS BASKETBALL STANFIELD 61, ECHO 45 — In their fi nal non-league matchup, the Stanfi eld Tigers came back from two consecutive losses to pull off a 61-45 victory despite being down some boys in the fi rst half. A handful of players had to sit out the fi rst two quarters for disci- plinary purposes, and it showed as the Cougars (6-9 overall, 3-1 Old Oregon League) entered halftime up 27-21. Things came together for the Tigers (7-8) in the second half, and it started with a 23-point third quarter. Leading Stanfi eld was sopho- more Rene Sanchez with 12 points, and both juniors Hugo Hernandez and Eduardo Nunez put up 11 points each. For Echo, junior Devan Craig was the top scorer with a game-high 13 points. Speed ended with a game-high 28 points and was practically unstoppable. For Mac-Hi, senior Luis Garcia led with 13 points. Now, riding a two-game win streak the TigerScots (5-10) will jump into league play. The Pioneers (10-5 overall, 0-1 Greater Oregon League) will have a chance to shake off their latest skid with a short road trip.
