MISSION
Tamástslikt accepting entries for youth art show
East Oregonian
All young artists in the region are
invited to enter the 2018 ArtWORKz Junior
Art Show & Competition at Tamástslikt
Cultural Institute.
In addition to showing artwork in a real
gallery setting, youth artists will vie for
prize awards and be the guests of honor
during an artist reception.
Open to all artists 18 and under — both
tribal and non-tribal youths are invited to
enter — the show includes all art mediums,
including sculpture, paintings, drawings,
printmaking, glass, mixed media, photog-
raphy, fiber art and computer-generated
artwork. In addition, traditional tribal work,
such as beadwork, weaving and parfleche
painting, are welcome. There is no entry fee.
Recognition will include grand prizes,
awards of excellence, awards of merit,
honorable mentions and best emerging
artist. Also, participants will choose an
artists’ choice award.
Submissions are due by Thursday, Jan.
18 at Tamástslikt, located near Wildhorse
Resort & Casino. During the maintenance
closure, which runs Jan. 8-20, submissions
will be accepted at the museum’s front
entrance.
The show will hang Jan. 27 through
March 17. The exhibit’s opening day is free
of charge. Awards will be announced during
the artists’ reception Saturday, Feb. 10 at 1
p.m., which is open to the public.
Tamástslikt’s regular hours are Monday
through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Also, the Kinship Cafe is open from 11 a.m.
to 2 p.m.
Museum admission is $25 for a family
of four, $10 for adults, $9 for seniors, $6
for youths 6-17 and free for ages 5 and
under. Also, the first Friday of each month
offers free admission. In addition, passes
can be checked out at local libraries, which
provide free entry for the passholder and
their family. Group rates and interpreters
are available.

serves breakfast
STANFIELD — The monthly breakfast
at the Stanfield Community Center offers an
a la carte meal.
The public is invited to enjoy an
affordable breakfast while visiting with

AAUW presentation
highlights Cason’s Place
PENDLETON — People can learn more
about Cason’s Place during the upcoming
AAUW meeting.
A support center for grieving children,
teens and families, it was created in memory
of Cason Terjeson. The 16-year-old died
during a farming accident in Umatilla
County in 2007.
The teen’s family found grief support
at the Dougy Center in Portland. Based on
their experience, they spearheaded efforts to
create something similar in Umatilla County.
Guests are welcome at the general
membership meetings of the AAUW
(American Association of University
Women). Debbie McBee, who serves on
the Cason’s Place board of directors, will
present the January program Saturday at 11
a.m. at The Prodigal Son Brewery & Pub,
230 S.E. Court Ave., Pendleton.
The AAUW works to advance equity
for women and girls through advocacy,
education, philanthropy and research. The
Pendleton affiliate is the closest group in the
region. During its winter schedule, the group
meets the first Saturday of each month. For

Athena awards banquet
to celebrate its citizens
ATHENA — The annual awards banquet
in Athena will recognize those who make the
Umatilla County town a special place to live
and work.
The banquet will honor several citizens,
including presenting youth and business
awards. The event is Monday, Jan. 15 at
6 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church,
located at North Fifth and College streets,
Athena. The program includes live music by
a chamber ensemble and a presentation by
Rep. Greg Barreto.
Tickets, which are $15 per person, are
available at the door. The meal serves as a
fundraiser for the Athena Baptist Church
youth group.
The evening also includes centerpiece
and door prize raffles, and a Wildhorse
Resort & Casino gift package. Raffle tickets
are $5 each or five for $20.

Winter reading challenge
offers cool treats
HERMISTON — The Blizzard of Books
reading challenge will offer a tasty treat to
young readers during the month of January.
The Hermiston Public Library is
encouraging youths to spend some of
their indoor time reading books. Kids in
pre-kindergarten through second grade can
enter a drawing for a Dairy Queen treat for
every six picture books they read. Children
in third grade and up will receive an entry
for every two “chapter books” that they read.
The drawing will be held Tuesday, Jan. 30.

Eastern Oregon Forum to
look at cannabis in Pendleton
PENDLETON — The 2018 Eastern
Oregon Forum opens with a look at pot in
Pendleton.
Brandon Krenzler, partner/owner of Kind
Leaf, a cannabis dispensary; Steve Hardin,
manager of emergency services at CHI/St.
Anthony Hospital; and Dr. David Conant-
Norville, a child and adolescent psychiatrist
with Mind Matters clinics in Pendleton and
Hillsboro; will tackle the topic of “Legal
Marijuana in Pendleton: One Year Later.”
The forum is Tuesday, Jan. 16 at 7 p.m.
in Science and Technology Building Room
ST-200 at Blue Mountain Community
College, 2411 N.W. Carden Ave., Pendleton.
The forum is open to the public and tickets
are $5 at the door and free for students.
People can purchase a $15 membership ($25
for couples) for admission to all four forums
for the season.
The Eastern Oregon Forum is a
collaborative effort between BMCC,
InterMountain Education Service District,
the East Oregonian, American Association
of University Women and Harriet Isom,
