A winter storm moving through the Pacific Northwest Friday brought a mixture of showers, mountain snow and freezing rain to the area. Rain leaves Oregon meager snowpack WILLAMETTE PASS (AP) — Plenty of rain has fallen in Oregon since October, the beginning of the recorded rain year. Yet the snowpack for the entire state is 54 percent below normal. The snowpack in the mountains of the Willamette Basin is 55 percent below normal, said Scott Oviatt, snow survey supervisor at the Natural Resources Conservation Service in Portland. Just two winters ago, unseasonably warm weather contributed to the lowest snowpack levels on record in the Cascades. The weather forecast for the next few days doesn’t look promising for snow lovers. An “atmospheric river” of moisture was expected to move into Oregon, and drop rain on much of the state, according to the National Weather Service in Portland. Relatively warm temperatures will prevent the precipitation from turning into snow over much of the Cascades, McCoy said. Higher elevations in the moun- tain range may get a few inches of snow, she said. Man found with gunshot wound in Morrow County discharged from hospital BOARDMAN — A man found with a gunshot wound last week in Morrow County has been released from the hospital. Kyle Ulrich, 47, told the East Oregonian he was discharged from Good Shepherd Medical Center on Thursday. The hospital confirmed he is no longer a patient. Oregon State Police reported they responded to Love’s Travel Stop near exit 159 on Interstate 84 on the morning of Dec. 21 for a report of a man in a private vehicle with a single gunshot wound. The caller reported that Ulrich, injured, had flagged them down a few miles away and they had transported him to the truck stop before calling 9-1-1. Ulrich told police that he had been kidnapped in another part of the state and held captive in an unknown location for several days before being taken to Morrow County and shot. According to information provided by OSP on Friday, detectives are still investigating the case and trying to substantiate those claims. They do not believe there is a threat to the general public. 0s showers t-storms 10s rain 20s flurries 30s 40s snow ice 50s 60s cold front 70s 80s 90s 100s warm front stationary front 110s high low National Summary: Snow will fall on part of the Northeast and will diminish over the northern Rockies today. Authorities urged drivers to be careful as freezing rain and snow created icy roads in many parts of the region, including many communities in Whatcom County and central and eastern Wash- ington. “Driving conditions are bad, and walking conditions are, too,” the Grant County Sheriff’s office said in a tweet Friday, urging people to “just stay home if they can.” About 1 to 2 feet of snow was expected in the North Cascades, the National Weather Service in Seattle said Friday morning. Meanwhile, Snoqualmie and other mountain passes saw a mixture of snow and freezing rain. Gusts and winds are expected to pick up throughout Friday in western Washington and could bring possible tree damage, said Logan Johnson, a meteo- rologist with the National Weather Service in Seattle. Heavy rain may also cause minor flooding in some rivers in western Washington. A -0s flood warning was in effect for a few Puget Sound rivers through Monday. Parts of northwest Oregon and southwest Washington may get up to several inches of rain, and a flood watch is in effect in that region until late Friday. In Idaho, officials said the winter storm will make traveling difficult in the panhandle region through Saturday with up to 2 feet of snow expected. Idaho Transportation Department spokeswoman Megan Sausser said crews have been pre-treating roads with salt and are now out plowing. “In a storm event like this there are going to be plows on the road 24-7,” she said. Tractor-trailers heading for Lookout Pass on Interstate 90 east of Coeur d’Alene on Friday are being required to use chains. Several winter storms have already come through this season resulting in a flurry of crashes and slide- offs, but drivers might have had enough practice now to adapt to winter driving conditions, said Idaho State Police spokeswoman Natalie Allred in Coeur d’Alene. “It’s snowing pretty hard right now,” she said late Friday morning. “It all depends if it’s going to get warm or cold.” Classified & Legal Advertising 1-800-962-2819 or 541-278-2678 classifieds@eastoregonian.com or legals@eastoregonian.com NEWS • To submit news tips and press releases: • call 541-966-0818 • fax 541-276-8314 • email news@eastoregonian.com • To submit community events, calendar items and Your EO News: email community@eastoregonian.com or call Tammy Malgesini at 541-564-4539 or Renee Struthers at 541-966-0818. • To submit engagements, weddings and anniversaries: email rstruthers@eastoregonian.com or visit www.eastoregonian. com/community/announcements • To submit a Letter to the Editor: mail to Managing Editor Daniel Wattenburger, 211 S.E. Sgt. Julie Denney of the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office says the second child is from the same kindergarten class at Lower Table Rock Elementary School in White City. The volunteer, 72-year-old Jerry Lodge, has pleaded not guilty. He was in the classroom through a program that places seniors in classrooms throughout the Rogue Valley. Participants must pass a criminal background check. Lodge has been in the county jail since his Dec. 8 arrest. EUGENE, (AP) — A 31-year-old man is accused of violating a no-contact order 29 times in two weeks. The Register-Guard reports Ryan Drew’s order was issued Dec. 15 by a Lane County Circuit Court judge after Drew was arrested by Coburg police Dec. 13, charged with four felonies and three misdemeanors. Lane County Chief Deputy District Attorney Erik Hasselman says the majority of the no-contact order violations were a result of Drew calling the victim from jail. Drew has pleaded not guilty to charges of unlawful use of a weapon, strangulation, assault and felon in possession of a firearm. in addition to misdemeanor charges.
