911 calls show chaos of Washington state train derailment

SEATTLE — Whimpering in
pain, bleeding from head injuries
and dazed by the enormity of the
crash, victims in the Amtrak train
derailment south of Seattle begged
911 dispatchers for help and
believed that “tons of people” had
been hurt.
Dozens of emergency record-
ings released Wednesday by South
Sound 911 Dispatch provided a
vivid account of what happened
during the deadly Dec. 18 crash.
“My abdomen hurts really bad.
I don’t feel good,” said a crying
woman identified as Angela
who was bleeding from her head
and wailed in panic each time
she couldn’t find an answer to a
dispatcher’s questions. “I don’t
know how old I am off the top of
my head. I’m sorry!”
Angela was in Car 5 with her
14-year-old son as the passenger
train barreled through a curve at 78
mph in a 30 mph zone, derailing
along both sides of the tracks and
toppling some cars onto Interstate
5 below.
Angela begged for help and
ordered her bleeding son to lie still
because he had neck and back pain.
He took a hit to his face. They got
slammed into a table. She couldn’t
find her shoes.

Friends Jim Hamre, 61, and Zack
Willhoite, 35, died of brain and
skull injuries. Benjamin Gran, 40,
died of multiple traumatic injuries.
Another 911 caller said there
were bodies everywhere. A
dispatcher said there were at least
12 bodies on the tracks.
One man called seeking infor-
mation about his wife after learning
she hit her head while on the train.
He said he was driving to the scene,
but the dispatcher urged him to
avoid the area so he didn’t get stuck
on the road.
The man replied: “I’m not going
to be able to not (go). He added: “I
apologize for being a bit of a mess
and in a panic.”
On the ground, a woman iden-
tified as Aura MacArthur said she
was driving south on Interstate 5
and thought her car had been hit by
a mudslide.
“A huge cloud of mud and dirt
came and hit my car and spun me
around,” she said, cold and crying
in her glass-strewn SUV.
“I am the only car besides a semi
that made it through the train derail-
ment. I was right at the front when
it came,” she said, at times gasping
for air and weeping.
“My chest is sore but my airbag’s
deployed ... I can’t go anywhere,”
she said.
She said it was dark and no
vehicles could pass because the
interstate was blocked by the train
wreckage.
“I hope everybody’s OK,” she
said.
Seaside rope and rescue team recovers dog stranded on cliff

In a dramatic rescue, a dog
stranded overnight on a cliff
along the Oregon Coast was
brought to safety Tuesday
morning.
Felix, a 2-year-old border
collie, was rescued unharmed
from a precipice north of
Indian Beach by the Seaside
rope and rescue team.
He had gone missing
around 3 p.m. Monday
during a Christmas day hike.
“He doesn’t just leave,
it’s not like how he is,” said
Sarah Stremming, Felix’s
owner.
“He does like water, so
I figured he went over the
cliff. He would have come
back to me when I called if
he hadn’t.”
For the rest of the evening,
Seattle resident Stremming
and a group of friends
searched the cliffside to no
avail.
“We thought we knew
where he was, we just
couldn’t see him and he
couldn’t hear us due to the
tides,” she said.
Stremming posted a call
to action on her Facebook
page Monday in an effort to
reach out to what she called
“an extensive network of
dog lovers.” By Tuesday

Verley used his private drone
to locate Felix. It was deter-
mined the only way to reach
him was by scaling the cliff
face with ropes.
Search
and
rescue
missions aren’t uncommon
in and around Ecola State
Park. On average, the rope
and rescue team retrieves
about six to 12 hikers each
year, Benedict said.
But most happen in the
summer, and this was the
first high-angle rescue this
year, Benedict said — a type
of rescue that is steeper and
requires more climbing than
usual.

first rescue since gaining his
certification a year ago.
“The most difficult part
about this rescue was the fact
it was a dog,” Dennis said.
“You can’t reason with a dog,
and they can’t really help. At
one point he slipped out of
his harness, and I was basi-
cally bear hugging him, with
no available hand holds.”
About three hours later,
Felix was greeted by a warm
blanket, a visibly emotional
owner and group of friends
anxiously awaiting his
arrival.

everything,”
