Rare white Christmas causes car crashes Suspect in Oregon
PORTLAND (AP) — It’s
a good thing Santa travels
by air. Much of the rainy
Pacific Northwest got a rare
white Christmas that left
roadways treacherous.
Dozens of crashes were
reported Sunday in and
around Portland and Seattle,
and slippery roadways led
to some closures. The snow
wasn’t particularly deep,
only an inch or two, but it
created havoc — especially
on hills — when mixed with
freezing rain.
The weather gradually
warmed Monday, but the
National Weather Service
said roads remained slick.
The agency said it’s only
the sixth time since 1884
that downtown Portland has
had measurable snow on the
ground on Dec. 25.
“Grab a cup of hot cocoa
or coffee this morning, sit
back and enjoy the rare sight
... a white Christmas across
Portland!” it said in a tweet.
A white Christmas is
also unusual for Seattle, and
drivers struggled with the
conditions.

north of Seattle, KOMO-TV
reported.
Stevenson grabbed a
shovel while other neigh-
bors threw cat litter in the
road to help with traction.
“We were coming home
from QFC just up the
street here,” Stevenson said
Sunday, referring to the
supermarket chain. “And we
got behind a bunch of these
cars. I saw it and I said, ‘We
better get home and get my
shovels out here and start
helping some people.
“You can see the anger
that comes from all of this.
It’s just ... it’s no fun,” he
said.
The Washington State
Patrol said a 36-year-old
woman died Sunday when
her car veered off a road
near the city of Roy and hit a
tree. Authorities believe the
snow caused it.
A Northwest city more
accustomed to snow —
Boise, Idaho — got about
9 inches from a pair of
weekend storms. The Idaho
Statesman reported that
there were dozens of crashes
and slide-offs around the
region, but no fatalities.
Killer says marijuana use might have played role
MEDFORD (AP) — A
man found guilty by reason of
insanity in the stabbing death
of Ashland partygoer now
says marijuana use might
have contributed to psychotic
delusions.
Pedro
Sabalsa-Mendez
made the suggestion during a
hearing last week before the
Oregon Psychiatric Security
Review Board. The Mail
Tribune obtained an audio
recording.
Sabalsa-Mendez
killed
20-year-old Avi Feldman
at party on Nov. 6, 2016. A
witness said Sabalsa-Mendez
had been acting strangely at
the party. He then stabbed
Feldman
while
yelling
“Suicide!”
Sabalsa-Mendez,
diag-
nosed with schizophrenia,
was committed to the care and
custody of the review board.
He is being held at an Oregon
State Hospital psychiatric
facility in Junction City.
Sabalsa-Mendez,
however, is starting to
question the role drugs may
have played in the murder,
according to testimony at the
hearing.
“Very recently, as in the
last week and a half, Mr.
Sabalsa has expressed a lot
of concern that his symptoms
could be substance-induced,”
Dr. Matie Trewe told the
board.
Sabalsa-Mendez said he
was using more marijuana at
the time than he previously
disclosed, according to a
recent evaluation report.
But Trewe said Sabal-
sa-Mendez — before the
murder — was seen at least
twice at a hospital because of
psychotic symptoms. Toxi-
cology tests were performed
and he tested negative for
drugs.
“To me, that makes it
extremely unlikely that his
substance abuse alone was
responsible for his psychotic
symptoms,” Trewe said.

PORTLAND (AP) — A
Mexican man who was
charged in a crash that killed
an Oregon sheriff’s deputy
in 2007 and then mistakenly
released 10 months ago has
been arrested again, author-
ities said.
Oregon State Police
said in a statement Sunday
that it learned Alfredo de
Jesus-Ascencio, 29, had
been caught in Mexico.
A grand jury had indicted
him on charges of criminally
negligent homicide more
than a decade ago after a
head-on collision that killed
his 19-year-old passenger
and Marion County Deputy
Kelly Fredinburg.
De Jesus-Ascencio was
critically injured but out of
the hospital by the time a
judge issued a warrant for
his arrest.
He fled to Mexico and
wasn’t caught until January
2017. He was mistakenly let
go a month later due to an
administrative error at the
prison in Baja California.
Oregon State Police
said de Jesus-Ascencio
was arrested Thursday
in Michoacan, a western
Mexican state.
Oregon prosecutors in
2010 sought to have Mexican
authorities prosecute him
in their country because it
was unlikely he would be
extradited to the U.S.
Fredinburg, 33, was
heading to an emergency
call June 16, 2007, when
his patrol car was struck
by a Ford Crown Victoria
that was traveling in the
opposite direction and
crossed the center line. The
patrol car caught fire, and
Fredinburg became the first
Marion County deputy to
die in the line of duty.
De
Jesus-Ascencio’s
passenger died from his
injuries at a hospital.
Oregon State Police
and the Marion County
District Attorney’s Office
worked jointly to find
de Jesus-Ascencio with
the FBI, U.S. Embassy,
Interpol and the Mexican
Attorney General’s Office.
