Kalan McGlothan scored a season-
high 33 points, grabbed 14 rebounds
and recorded fi ve
steals to lead her Girls Basketball
Buckaroos to a
57-41 road victory
over the Rex

fresh off of a
60-48 win over
South Albany one
night ago where
McGlothan again led the team with
23 points and 18 rebounds. After
missing the fi rst four games with a
hamstring injury, McGlothan and
fellow senior post Maureen Davies
has made Pendleton a tough team to
guard inside. Davies netted 14 points,
four rebounds, three blocks against
Putnam and had 12 points and nine
rebounds against South Albany.
“It’s no secret our strength comes
from our post play,” Pendleton coach
Kevin Porter said.
Against the Kingsmen (1-5) Pend-
leton’s defense turned up their play
when they needed it the most to help
earn the win. At the end of the third
quarter with the Bucks and Kingsmen
tied at 39-39, Porter recalled telling
the team “you got eight minutes left,
we’re better than them so you just
have to go out there and out-work
them,” and the team listened well.
The Buckaroos defense held the
Kingsmen to a mere two points in the
fi nal quarter and tallied 22 steals on
the game.
And while McGlothan and Davies
got the headlines, Porter emphasized
the importance of other players’
contributions outside of the scoring
department. Rylee Gentner had just
one point, but grabbed six rebounds,
had two steals and two assists, Hallie
Porter did not score though she led
the team with seven assists with four
steals, and Jaiden Lemberger had
six points with fi ve steals and three
assists.

Burns the fi rst Irrigon girl to reach 1,000 career points

IRRIGON — During Irrigon
girls basketball head coach
Mike Royer’s extensive career,
he has coached only a handful of
players who reached the 1,000-
point milestone — all of whom,
until Saturday, where from his
years at Hermiston.
There’s a certain kind of
player how can accomplish this
feat, Royer explained.
“It takes just consistency and
you don’t see that very often,”
he said.
It also takes years on the
court at the varsity level to aid
in the process. All of which are
components of Irrigon senior
Jada Burns’ game.
The three-sport star athlete
recently became the fi rst Knight
in the girls basketball program
to notch 1,000 career points,
and for Burns it was just like
any other game.
“I was just wanting to win
and it happened,” Burns said
of Saturday’s game against La
Grande, where her 10-point
performance helped eclipse a
career milestone that she had
been working towards the past

20 points and a season-high
17 rebounds, and the San
Antonio Spurs beat the Port-
land Trail Blazers 93-91 on
Wednesday night.

Mariners bolster bullpen, sign
RHP Nicasio to 2-year deal
SEATTLE (AP) — The Mariners have
signed reliever Juan Nicasio to a two-year
contract, giving Seattle another hard-throwing
arm out of its bullpen.
Seattle announced the signing
on Tuesday after Nicasio
completed a physical. The deal
was agreed upon during the winter
meetings last week in Florida.
Seattle’s 40-man roster is now at
39.
Nicasio, 31, spent the 2017
Nicasio
season with three teams in the
National League, posting a 2.61
ERA in 76 appearances. The appearances were
a career high and tied for the most in the NL.
The right-hander spent most of the season
with Pittsburgh before stints with Philadelphia
(two games) and St. Louis (nine games). He
was 2-0 with a 1.64 ERA and four saves in his
nine appearances with the Cardinals.

(UIL) state championship game with
nine extra points on Wednesday at
the Dallas Cowboys’ AT&T Stadium.

Gulich’s double-double helps
No. 17 Beavers beat UC Davis
CORVALLIS (AP) — Marie Gulich had a
double-double and No. 17 Oregon State used
an 11-2 run in the third quarter to defeat UC
Davis 61-47 on Wednesday night, the Beavers’
sixth straight win.
Gulich had 12 points and 12
rebounds plus four assists and
two blocks. Mikayla Pivec led
the Beavers (9-2) with 14 points with nine
rebounds and Taya Corosdale added 12 points.
Morgan Bertsch led the Aggies (9-2), who
lost their second straight, with 20 points but
that was on 8-of-23 shooting.
Oregon State led 34-30 at the half and
opened the third quarter with a Corosdale
3-pointer. After a Bertsch basket the Beavers
put together the key run with Pivec scoring
four points. When Taylor Kalmer hit a
3-pointer, OSU led 48-34.
