City won’t look into
harassment claims
against ex-mayor
PORTLAND (AP) — Portland
will not be investigating allegations
that former Mayor Sam Adams
made sexually inappropriate
comments and attempted to drive
drunk when in office.
The Oregonian/OregonLive
reported Thursday that emails it
obtained from the city attorney
disclosed that an investigation will
not happen.
The emails said there will be no
investigation because the alleged
conduct took place too long ago
and Adams is no longer a city
employee.
Adams’ former executive
assistant, Cevero Gonzalez, says
Adams asked him uncomfortable
questions such as when the last time
he “got laid” was, what positions he
preferred during sex and questions
about male body parts.
Adams denied the allegations
and said he would “gladly
participate” in an investigation.
Sheriff’s corporal
accused of sexually
abusing co-worker
HILLSBORO (AP) — A
Washington County sheriff’s
corporal has been arrested for
alleged sexual misconduct against
a co-worker.
The Washington County
Sheriff’s Office says 45-year-old
Kevin Kearns was arrested
Thursday after another employee
12
last week reported ongoing sexual
harassment by Kearns while both
were working in the jail.
Kearns was released on his own
recognizance and was ordered to
appear in court later this month.
Kearns is accused of making
sexual comments to the victim,
which allegedly escalated to
unwanted touching.
Kearns has been placed
on leave while investigations
continue.
It wasn’t immediately clear if
Kearns had a lawyer.
Taxi company offers
cabs to help homeless
stay warm
SALEM (AP) — A Salem taxi
company is offering homeless
residents a seat inside its cabs
on chilly nights when the city’s
warming centers are not open.
The Statesman Journal reports
Friday that Willamette Valley
Yellow Cab offers free rides to
shelters on cold nights but this
winter they are going a step farther.
The nonprofit in charge of
opening Salem’s warming centers
doesn’t do so unless the overnight
temperature is forecast to dip to 27
degrees or below for three nights
in a row.
Critics say the policy developed
by Mid-Valley Community Action
Agency needs to change.
The cab company says drivers
can let homeless people stay in the
cabs for 10 to 15 minutes.
Homeless customers will have
to wait for a free cab like anyone
else hailing a ride.

Bank robber’s
nickname cashes in
on Star Wars frenzy
PORTLAND (AP) —
Authorities in Oregon are taking
advantage of the frenzy around
the opening day of the latest Star
Wars movie to catch a bad guy of
their own.
Police in Portland on Friday
nicknamed an alleged bank robber
the “Palpatine Bandit” because of
the dark-colored hoodie he wears
during bank hold-ups.
Emperor Sheev Palpatine, also
known as the Darth Sidious in the
Star Wars franchise, wears a dark
and hooded cloak.
Man charged
with murder in
1989 death of teen
BELLINGHAM, Wash. (AP)
— Whatcom County prosecutors
have filed a charge of first-degree
murder against a man in the death
of a teenager near Bellingham in
1989.
The Bellingham Herald reports
Timothy Bass was charged
with murder on Thursday in
connection to the abduction, rape
and murder of Mandy Stavik of
the Acme area.
Whatcom County Prosecutor
David McEachran says that’s
likely to be the only charge
because the statute of limitations
has run out for rape or kidnapping
charges.
Bass’ arraignment is set for
Dec. 22.

Bend planning
commission chair
quits in frustration
BEND (AP) — The chairman
of Bend’s planning commission is
resigning in frustration over low
public participation and what he
says is a lack of influence.
The Bulletin reports Friday that
Bill Wagner told Mayor Casey
Roats in a letter that Bend’s
planning process is dominated by
city employees
He also feels that are set in
stone before they are brought to
the commission for a vote and
there is resistance to making any
changes.
He says his biggest frustration
was for the process to develop
a master plan for Oregon State
University’s Cascades campus.
Wagner has been on the
commission in the fast-growing
city since 2011 and became its
chairman in 2013.
The 74-year-old will leave
the commission at the end of this
month.

TIGARD (AP) — An off-duty
police officer from Tigard was
seriously injured when authorities
say an intoxicated driver slammed
into his car.
The Tigard Police Department
says Officer Matthew Barbee was
driving home from his patrol shift in
the early morning hours Thursday.
Barbee had car trouble and
pulled over to wait for help.
While he was waiting inside his
car, an intoxicated driver slammed
into his car from behind.
Barbee suffered serious injuries
and is being treated in a local
trauma center.
The department says the driver
remained at the scene and charges
are pending.
The person’s name was not
released.
The next installment in the
movie franchise, Star Wars:
The Last Jedi, opens in theaters
Friday.
Police departments often
give nicknames to bank robbery
suspects to help generate tips
from the public.
Police say this real-life robber
held up a U.S. Bank branch on
Thursday but was not armed.
He got away with an
undisclosed amount of cash.
