Umatilla County Cultural Coalition seeks grant applicants

The
Umatilla
County
Cultural Coalition is accepting
applications for 2018 grant
funds for art, heritage and
humanities projects.
The local coalition provides
grant awards to support goals
of the Umatilla County Cultural
Plan. The coalition receives
funding from the Oregon
Cultural Trust.
The upcoming grant dead-
line for 2018 is Thursday, Jan.
11. Successful applicants will
receive their grant awards by
the end of February.
Grants disbursed in 2017
included:
•PENDLETON: Pendleton
High School foreign language
club, $350 to attend the
University of Oregon Foreign
Language & International
Studies Day; the Pendleton
Public Library, $650 for a
Women in Music program;
Betty Feves Memorial Gallery,
$650 for shipping costs for two
exhibits; College Community
Theatre, $2,000 for Summer
Youth Theatre Camp; Eastern
Oregon Correctional Institu-
tion, $1,000 for an Oregon
Humanities program; Oregon
East Symphony, $1,000 for an
A Sharp Players concert.

Cultural Coalition, which

include a guest art instructor
for the Heppner Art &
Culture Club; building
preservation work at
the Lexington Grange;
a Heppner High School
drama club production;
Morrow County Historical
Society Chronicles; and the
Willow Creek Symphony,
an ensemble of the Inland
Northwest Musicians.
Applications for 2019
culturally based activities
in Morrow County are
now being accepted.

for up to 50 percent of
the total project cost. For

SICIANS HOLIDAY CONCERT, 7

Season” includes performances by all
ensembles of the Inland Northwest
Musicians of Christmas and holiday

A pair of local libraries are planning special
events centered around “Polar Express.”
The Hermiston Public Library will be
serving up hot chocolate, cookies and other fun
activities. Kids are encouraged to wear their
pajamas during the Polar Express party.
The free event, which also features a photo
booth, is Thursday, Dec. 21 from 3-6 p.m. at 235
E. Gladys Ave., Hermiston.
In Pendleton, kids are invited to wear their
favorite pajamas for fun at the library. The
special story time will feature a reading of “Polar
Express.” In addition, Santa Claus will make an
appearance. The free event is Thursday, Dec. 21
at 6 p.m. at the Pendleton Public Library, 502
S.W. Dorion Ave.

Desert Arts seeks youth dancers
HERMISTON — Nearly two dozen young
dancers are needed for Dancing with the
Hermiston Stars.
Presented by the Desert Arts Council, 10
boys and 10 girls, ages 10-16, will be chosen to
participate. Dancers will work with professionals
from the Utah Ballroom Dance Company
during rehearsals (Jan. 8-11, the time will be
announced), a dress rehearsal Saturday, Jan.
13 at 3 p.m. and the community performance
Saturday, Jan. 13 at 7 p.m. All activities will
take place in the auditorium at Hermiston High
School.
Participants will receive a free ticket to
the event. Others who want to attend need to
purchase tickets, which are $20 for adults and
$10 for students.

Program seeks nominations for
Oregon’s next poet laureate
PORTLAND — Nominations for Oregon’s
next poet laureate are currently being accepted.
The poet laureate fosters the art of poetry,
encourages literacy and learning, addresses
central issues relating to the humanities and
heritage, and reflects on public life in Oregon. All
styles and sub-genres of poetry, including prose,
slam poetry and cowboy poetry, are considered.
During the two-year term, the poet laureate
will provide a minimum of 10 public readings/
events per year in urban and rural settings across
the state. They receive an honorarium of $10,000
per year, as well as an annual travel subsidy.
Nominations must be submitted by
Saturday, Jan. 13 via an online form at www.
oregonpoetlaureate.org. The next poet laureate
will begin their term in April 2018. For more
