FRIDAY
1:59 a.m. - Umatilla police responded to a disturbance at the
Riverside Sports Bar And Lounge, 150 Sixth St.
9:29 a.m. - Pilot Rock police assisted a citizen with removing
approximately 15 drug needles off Highway 395.
9:51 a.m. - A person came to the Umatilla Police Department
and asked to speak to an officer about being accused of sexual
harassment at work.
10:21 a.m. - Hermiston police took a report about a resident
on East Sunset Drive who has “random cars coming and going
all the time,” and the cars keep hitting garbage cans on the
street.
10:30 a.m. - Feral cats created problems for a Lexington
resident on West Water Street. She told the Morrow County
Sheriff’s Office she wanted someone to remove the three or
four “wild cats” now at her house, which came from a neighbor’s
house after the neighbor moved to Heppner.
4:09 p.m. - An 18-wheeler went off the road on Black
Mountain, Heppner, crashed and trapped the driver inside. The
Morrow County Sheriff’s Office and Heppner fire and ambulance
responded.
4:19 p.m. - The Morrow County Sheriff’s Office took a
complaint about vehicles not stopping at the stop sign when
leaving Love’s Travel Stop, 8665 Tower Road, Boardman.
4:22 p.m. - A woman at The Saddle Restaurant & Lounge,
2220 S.E. Court Ave., Pendleton, called 911 for to police to help
get an intoxicated male out of her vehicle.
SATURDAY
12:52 a.m. - Umatilla police received a complaint about a
loud party in the area of Seventh and F streets.
3:02 p.m. - Pendleton police received a report of a distur-
bance at RKL Storage on Tutuilla Creek Road.
6:27 p.m. - Staff in the emergency department of St. Anthony
Hospital, 2801 St. Anthony Way, Pendleton, asked police to help
with a combative patient.
7:42 p.m. - Hermiston police responded to a report of a
robbery on the 200 block of Southwest 11th Street.
7:56 p.m. - A caller reported the theft of a car at Pilot Rock
High School on Northeast Douglas and Fourth streets, Pilot
Rock.
SUNDAY
2:56 a.m.- Pendleton police assisted with a disturbance at
Bi-Mart, 901 S.W. Emigrant Ave., Pendleton.
3:42 a.m. - A 911 caller reported a fight on South Main Street,
Stanfield.
5:40 p.m. - A Milton-Freewater resident reported graffiti on
his property on the 600 block of North Main Street.
11:41 p.m. - Hermiston police received a report of a caregiver
bringing a gun into a residence on Southeast Sixth Street.

•Morrow County Sheriff’s Office arrested Jose Antonio
Mareno, 40, of Irrigon, for felony fourth-degree assault.
•Umatilla Tribal Police arrested Darold Albert Foote, 46, of
Pendleton, for domestic abuse, assault and criminal mischief.
Saturday
•Pendleton police cited Ty Austin Zeigler, 18, of Pilot Rock,
for driving under the influence of intoxicants.
Sunday
•Pendleton police responded to a report at about 2:10 a.m.
of a drunk driver at Taco Bell, 2001 S.W. Court Place. Police
arrested Matthew C. Staigle, 21, of Joseph, for DUII.
•An Oregon State Police trooper at about 2 a.m. stopped a
black GMC Sierra pickup going west on Interstate 84 for going
112 mph. The trooper contacted the driver, Chrystal Lucinda
Scott, 31, address not provided, and found her to be drunk.
He arrested Scott for DUII, reckless driving and speeding at
100-plus mph. Her blood-alcohol level was .18 percent, state
police reported, more than twice the .08 percent legal limit. Police
later released Scott at the Umatilla County Jail, Pendleton.
•Oregon State Police cited Blake Cody Hahn, 34, of Milton-
Freewater for throwing burning material out of his car while
driving on Highway 11 near Key Boulevard, Milton-Freewater.
•Umatilla police arrested Manuel Ramirez-Andres, 31, of
Umatilla, for first-degree burglary, a felony, and third-degree
sexual abuse, a misdemeanor.
•The Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office arrested Patrick Tyler
Maahs, 28, of Hermiston, for domestic violence assault.

Jeffery Harold Koehler,
54, of Pendleton went to his
heavenly home on Saturday,
December 9, 2017, with his
loving family by his side.
Jeff was born in Cudahy,
Wis., to Robert Edward and
Barbara Ann (Schweiger)
Koehler. In 1969 he and his
family moved to Anchorage,
Alaska. Jeff learned his trade
in high school shop classes
and was a ASE Certified
Master Tech Mechanic for
over 25 years.
On November 10, 1985,
he married Venessa Marie
Taylor in Palmer, Alaska.
They lived in Anchorage,
Alaska, until moving to
Pendleton in 1990 with his
budding family. Jeff owned
KARS (Koehler Auto Repair
Service) in Pendleton.
He is survived by his

Former Portland mayor
Vera Katz dies at age 84
PORTLAND (AP) —
Vera Katz, a Jewish refugee
elected to three terms as
Portland’s mayor who helped
transform it from a sleepy
backwater into a trendy city
known for its public transit,
eco-conscious design and
live-work architecture style,
died Monday. She
was 84.
Katz was diag-
nosed with acute
leukemia this month
after
undergoing
dialysis for more
than a dozen years
following
cancer
treatment.
U.S. Sen. Ron
Wyden called Katz
an
“indomitable Katz
woman” who left
a lasting impact on Oregon
and its largest city. She also
served as first female speaker
of the Oregon House.
A visionary urban planner
with the ability to reach
across the aisle, Mayor Katz
oversaw plans for the interna-
tionally known Pearl District
and neighborhoods along
the Willamette River that
changed the city into a hipster
haven and international
tourist destination.
A champion of the
arts, Katz also oversaw
construction of Lan Su Yuan,
an intricate Suzhou-style
Chinese garden in the heart
of the city’s old town that
draws visitors from around
the world.
“Vera Katz was more than
a pioneer. She was a force.
She escaped the Nazis. She
battled cancer. She ran the
House. She ran the city. She
was a natural leader. Vera
led and people followed,”
said Oregon Senate President
Peter Courtney. “Oregon has
lost a great human being.”
Katz was born Vera Pistrak
to Russian exiles in Dussel-
dorf, Germany, on Aug. 3,
1933, just as the Nazis were
seizing power. When she was
an infant, her family escaped
to Paris and then, when she
was 7, the family crossed the
Pyrenees by foot into Spain.
She arrived in America on
a Greek steamboat and grew
up as a poor refugee in New
York City.
“My mom was the embod-
iment of the American dream:
coming with nothing and
making life better
not just for herself
but for the countless
others she touched,”
her son, Jesse Katz,
said in a statement.
In 1964, Vera
Katz moved to
Portland with her
husband, Mel, and
worked as a stay-at-
home mother.
She
didn’t
become active in
politics until age 34, when
she volunteered for Robert F.
Kennedy’s 1968 presidential
campaign.
Within five years, Katz
was elected to the state Legis-
lature and eventually became
the first female speaker of the
House, a job she kept for three
terms.
She went on to serve three
terms as Portland’s mayor,
from 1993 to 2005 — a crit-
ical period for a city that was
on the cusp of evolution.
In both roles, Katz
espoused progressive causes
such as gender equality and
gay rights long before they
were mainstream and cham-
pioned education, the arts and
labor rights.
She sponsored a landmark
school reform bill in the state
House and helped pass gun
control legislation.
Katz was diagnosed with
breast cancer in 2000 and an
aggressive form of uterine
cancer in 2004.
Treatment for the cancer
was successful but left her
reliant on dialysis three times
a week for 13 years, her family
said. Earlier this month, she
was diagnosed with acute
leukemia and entered hospice.
A memorial will be held in
January.
