Art exhibit features brushes with nature

holiday fun
HERMISTON — He’s making a list and
checking it twice — trying to find out who
has tickets to Pancakes with Santa.
People who want to attend this fun
holiday breakfast need to make sure to
purchase tickets in advance. Pancakes with
Santa is Saturday, Dec. 16 from 9:30-11
a.m. at the Hermiston Conference Center,
415 S. Highway 395. In addition to a
delicious pancake and sausage breakfast,
staff from the library will share a holiday
story and kids can have a picture taken with
Santa Claus. The cost is $8 for ages 2-15,
$10 for ages 16 and older or $30 per family.
Tickets must be purchased by Tuesday,
Dec. 12. They are available at Hermiston
City Hall, 180 N.E. Second St. For more

Book club to discuss
‘The Sworn Virgin’
HERMISTON — A historical novel
about a desperate Albanian woman is the
topic of the upcoming Hermiston Public
Library book club discussion.
Bookminders will discuss “The Sworn
Virgin” by Kristopher Dukes. The group,
which is free and open to anyone, meets
Wednesday, Dec. 13 at 1:30 p.m. at The
Pheasant Bar & Grill, 149 E. Main St.,
Hermiston.
After reading about the tradition of a
sworn virgin — women who vow chastity
while dressing as men — Dukes was
intrigued. The author spent five years
researching the topic and writing the book.
The book club meets the second
Wednesday of each month. Copies of the
book are available at the library. For more

works are inspired by the
shores and wilderness areas
along the Columbia River.
Familiar scenes include six
depicting the McNary Wild-
life Area. Other notable loca-
tions captured by the stroke
of Simpson’s brush are the
Blue Mountains, Warehouse
Beach, the John Day Basin
and Helix.

from 4-8 p.m. at the home of
Jim and Sue Simpson. 370 W.
Moore Ave., Hermiston. The
framed works, ranging from
8-by-10 to 38-by-30, are also

pounds when he was born,
Christopher Duffley, who is
also blind, didn’t speak in
full sentences until he was
in first grade.
Later diagnosed with
autism, the 16-year-old New
Hampshire youth loves to
sing. He has performed the
national anthem at venues
across the nation, including
Fenway Park and during a
NASCAR event.
Duffley has been a
featured keynote speaker
and singer at numerous
autism conferences. In
addition, he has performed
at many churches and
faith-related events. Duffley
has released a pair of
albums and maintains an
inspirational blog and does
podcasts.
