Tirico then said she heard

Two children die in Prairie City fire
A neighbor rescued a boy
from an apartment fire in
Prairie City early Thursday
morning, but two girls died in
the blaze.
Kimberley Shelton lived in
the Strawberry Village apart-
ment complex with her five
children, three boys ages 17,
12 and 4 and two girls ages 3
and 1, according to Prairie City
Volunteer Fire Department
Chief Marvin Rynearson. The
three boys survived, and the
two young girls perished in the
fire, he said.
The surviving family
members were transported
to Blue Mountain Hospital,
John Day, and the mother was
transported by air ambulance
to another hospital, Rynearson
said.
According to neighbor
Gloria
Tirico,
Shelton
managed to get out of her
burning apartment and go to
another building for help. Tiri-
co’s niece Livy Atchley and
Allen Detweiler lived there.
“Livy said she didn’t know
how Kimberley made it to
their apartment, she was so
badly burned,” Tirico said.

Repeat deportee
sentenced for
assault in U.S.
U of O reaches
tentative $88M
deal with Nike
SALEM (AP) — A
Mexican man who has
been deported from the
United States at least 13
times has been sentenced
to 35 years in prison after
pleading guilty to assault,
kidnapping and other
charges in separate attacks
on two women on the same
day.
Local TV stations
reported from the
courtroom that Sergio
Jose Martinez received the
sentence Friday in Portland,
a day after another man in
the United States illegally
was found not guilty by
a jury in San Francisco
in the shooting death of a
woman that touched off a
fierce national immigration
debate.
U.S. Attorney General
Jeff Sessions highlighted
Martinez’s case when
he visited Oregon in
September.
A spokesman for the
county prosecutor’s office
did not immediately return
a call seeking comment on
the case.
EUGENE (AP) — The
University of Oregon says
it has reached a tentative
agreement with Nike that
increases sponsorship to
$88 million in cash and
gear for the university.
The Register-Guard
reports the university’s
board of trustees will
consider approving the
11-year deal next week. The
university released only the
agreement description on
Thursday and not the full
draft contract.
The university would
receive $2 million annually
from Nike until 2023 under
the deal, and then the
amount would increase to
$2.5 million each year until
2028.
The school would also
get $5 million in apparel
each year. The gear would
gradually increase to $6
million in 2022.
Under the current deal
with Nike, the university
is receiving a base cash
payment of $600,000 and
$2.4 million in products this
school year.
