BRIEFLY
Community rolls out holiday season
By TAMMY MALGESINI
East Oregonian
People are invited to
head to Echo as the small
town offers big fun during
the holiday season.
“It’s kind of a quaint and
historic little community,”
said Diane Berry, city
administrator.
Typically, more than half
of the homes are decorated
with at least a few strands
of lights, Berry said. In
addition, the city has added
several light poles and
free-standing displays from
money through the Echo
Benefit Plan.
“You can come over the
hill and you can look down
on Dupont Street and see all
the lights,” Berry said about
driving into town.
Also, Echo Ridge Cellars
and Sno Road Winery are
rolling out festive fun with
Holiday Barrel Tasting.
The event is Friday, Dec. 8
from 4-8 p.m. and Saturday,
Dec. 9 from noon to 5 p.m.
at both wineries (551 N.
Thielsen St. and 111 W.
Main St.).
Each venue will offer
holiday wine deals and
samples of future releases
straight out of the barrel.
A gift basket workshop is
available Saturday, Dec. 9
at Echo Ridge. People can
create their own basket,
filling it with wine and
most familiar, she said, is
“The March” (aka “March
of the Toy Soldiers”)
from Tchaikovsky’s “The
Nutcracker Suite.”
Before renovations were
complete at the venue,
Berry asked for input
regarding acoustics from R.
Lee Friese, Inland North-
west Musicians director.
The group was invited
to play at the May 2000
dedication. And then, Berry
said, they arranged to play a
holiday concert — and have
returned each year.

‘Steel Magnolias’
PENDLETON —
Believable characters,
humor and a well-prepared
cast is set to present “Steel
Magnolias” at Pendleton
High School.
Director Shannon
O’Rourke-Hudson said the
production was delayed due
to work being done in the
auditorium. However, the
cast is excited to take the
stage to present the familiar
story that highlights
a mother-daughter
relationship.
“It’s a really great cast,”
O’Rourke-Hudson said.
Other than the voice
of the radio DJ (Brenden
Crosby), the all-female
cast includes Cameran
Miltenberger, Doria
Summerfield, Savanna
Newsome, Jessie Patterson,
all seniors, freshman Ellen
Paulsen and sophomore
Maddi Thompson.
Others involved with the
production include stage
manager Emily Long and
crew members Tanna
Stewart and Lupita Garcia,
all sophomores.
The play will be
presented Thursday through
Saturday at 6:30 p.m. in the
school’s auditorium, 1800
N.W. Carden Ave. Tickets
are $6 for adults and $4 for
students with identification.
The show, O’Rourke-
Hudson said, is appropriate
for all ages. She indicated
there are some innuendos
that younger kids likely
won’t understand but
there’s no profanity. For
