Junior QB continues to show maturation during playoff run By ERIC SINGER East Oregonian Carrying the lead but losing momentum, Andrew James and the Hermiston Bulldogs were facing a 3rd-and-10 from midfi eld as the time on the fourth quarter clock slowly ticked away. The Bulldogs were grasping tight to a 29-20 lead in the Class 5A semi- fi nal game on Saturday, and a failure to pick up the fi rst down would give Wilsonville the ball back with plenty of time to make a dent in its defi cit. However, there was no panic amongst the Bulldogs on the fi eld or sidelines. James, the Bulldogs’ junior quarterback, relayed the play to his team, walked to the line and surveyed the defense. He received the snap, made a quick three-step drop and threw a confi dent throw to a wide-open Dayshawn Neal for a 19-yard gain and a crucial fi rst down. As a sophomore last season, James fl ashed his potential throughout Hermiston’s 10-game season, throwing for more than 1,900 yards with 18 touchdowns while rushing for 624 more yards with another seven touchdowns. Atlanta stayed in the hunt for an NFC playoff spot thanks to its second straight victory and handed Seattle a second consecu- tive home loss. Ryan threw TDs Monday Night Football Atlanta Seattle 34 31 to Mohamed Sanu and Levine Toilolo, while Tevin Coleman added a 1-yard TD run on Atlan- ta’s opening possession. But it was Clayborn’s fumble return that helped break the game open early in the second quarter and gave Atlanta a 21-7 lead. He scooped up a loose ball after Russell Wilson was crunched by Takk McKinley and Courtney Upshaw. Seattle attempted a late rally down by 11 points. Wilson hit Doug Baldwin on a 29-yard TD with 3 minutes left, and Seattle got in range for a long fi eld goal attempt by Blair Walsh in the closing moments, but his 52-yard attempt with 2 seconds left came up short and Atlanta escaped with the victory. Wilson again was the entirety of Seattle’s offense, throwing for 258 yards and two touchdowns, and running for another 86 yards and a TD. But it was an awful night for the Seahawks, fi lled with more injuries and questionable deci- sions by coach Pete Carroll.
