The 19-year-old driver of this Oldmobile Alero and a 16-year-old
driving a silver Chevrolet pickup were both hospitalized after a
crash Thursday morning at Edwards and Feedville road.
Deputies did not give any
citations and the sheriff’s office
reported the crash remains under
investigation.
7 leaks found in Hanford’s oldest double-walled tank
told the Hanford Advisory Board
on Wednesday that a total of seven
leaks were found.
The Energy Department said no
waste is believed to have breached
the outer shell to contaminate the
environment.
Hanford for decades made pluto-
nium for nuclear weapons and the
wastes are left over from that work.
The most toxic wastes are stored in
177 giant underground tanks. There
are 28 newer double-walled tanks
and 149 single-walled tanks, some
of which date back to the dawn of the
Cold War. Many of the single-walled
tanks have leaked over the years.
The tanks are made of carbon
steel and contain more than 56
million gallons of the wastes that are

the most difficult to treat for perma-
nent disposal. Efforts to dispose of
those wastes are expected to take
decades and cost tens of billions of
dollars.
When Tank AY-102 was emptied,
leaks were revealed in two welds on
the bottom of the inner wall, Tren-
chard said.
In addition, corrosion appeared
to have left pits in the floor of the
inner wall, he said.
To determine if any of the pits
went all the way through the steel,
a small amount of liquid was
pumped into the space. The liquid
drained through the pits in five
places, bringing the total number
of known leaks to at least seven,
Trenchard said.

Hermiston man goes to Wildhorse hires new
prison for assault
executive chef
HERMISTON — Nicolas Pando
of Hermiston will serve almost six
years in prison for crimes stemming
from the August assault of his
ex-wife and her friend.
Pando, 38, took a plea deal on
Oct. 26 in Umatilla County Circuit
Court, Hermiston. Court records
show he pleaded guilty to the
following:
second-degree
assault,
unlawful use
of a weapon,
first-degree
criminal
mischief,
menacing,
attempted
coercion and
Pando
domestic
violence
charges of strangulation and
menacing.
Second-degree assault carries
a mandatory minimum prison
sentence of five years, 10 months.
The sentences for the other charges
run concurrent with the assault. The
state dismissed six other counts,
and Pando will receive credit for
the time he spent in the Umatilla
County Jail, Pendleton.
Hermiston police the night of
Aug. 6 responded to an assault on
the 600 block of Southeast Seventh
Street. Police reported finding two
injured women — Pando’s ex-wife
and her friend. His ex arrived to
pick up their 4-year-old son, and
Pando attacked the women with
his fists and a baseball bat. Pando
refused to come out of his home for
around four hours.
Pando now is at the Oregon
Department of Corrections’ Coffee
Creek Intake Center, Wilsonville,
while the department determines
where to place him.
MISSION — A new executive
chef brings more than 30 years
of culinary arts experience to
Wildhorse Resort & Casino.
Jeff Sommer, who most
recently worked in New Orleans,
got his first taste of cooking
while helping his mother bake
and preserve vegetables from his
grandparent’s
garden. As a
16-year-old,
Sommer
started
working as a
busboy, which
lead to his
yearning to be
in the kitchen.
Sommer
Sommer
attended
Fox Valley
Technical College in Appleton,
Wisconsin, receiving degrees
in both hotel restaurant
management and culinary arts.
From there, he was accepted
into the Culinary Institute of
America. He honed his skills at
various private business clubs,
country clubs and resorts. Bruce
Mecham, Wildhorse food and
beverage director, said Sommer
is a great fit.
“The experience he brings
gives him the ability to impact all
of our restaurant offerings and our
banquet facilities,” Mecham said.
“It also allows him to continue to
enhance our guests experience in
Plateau Fine Dining.”
An avid outdoorsman, Sommer
moved to Pendleton with his wife,
Cherrieanna, and son, Scott. Their
daughter, Cassie, attends Georgia
Southern University.

RICHLAND, Wash. (AP) —
Inspectors at the Hanford Nuclear
Reservation
in
south-central
Washington state have found at
least seven leaks in the site’s oldest
double-walled radioactive waste
storage tank.
Tank AY-102 was known since
2012 to have a slow leak from its
inner shell into the space between its
inner and outer walls.
The Tri-City Herald reports that
the tank, which was built in the
1960s and once held 744,000 gallons
of waste, had been emptied of all but
19,000 gallons by February.
Then an inspection was done
with video cameras.

A two-vehicle crash Thursday
morning near Stanfield sent two
teens to the hospital.
The Umatilla County Sheriff’s
Office in a written statement
reported the crash occurred before
7:50 a.m. at the intersection of
South Edwards and Feedville roads
when a red 2001 Oldsmobile Alero
traveling south on South Edwards
crashed with a silver 1993 Chevrolet
pickup driving west on Feedville.
The Umatilla County Fire District
and sheriff’s deputies responded.
A 19-year-old woman drove the
Oldsmobile and a 16-year-old male
drove the Chevrolet, according to
the sheriff’s office, which has not
released names of the drivers. Emer-
gency workers freed the 19-year-old
from the wreck. The sheriff’s office
also reported the drivers were the
only occupants and both suffered
