PHS football star
Jerome commits to
Western Oregon
PENDLETON — On
Sunday evening, Pendleton
senior Shaw Jerome
announced his commitment
to play football at Western
Oregon University beginning
the Fall of 2018.
Jerome, a standout wide
receiver and defensive back
for the Buckaroos, made
the announcement via a
statement on his Twitter
account (@ShawJerome32).
Western Oregon, located in
Monmouth, extended Jerome
his fi rst collegiate offer in late
June, as did Eastern Oregon
University one day later.
Jerome was Pendleton’s
No. 1 receiver this season,
catching 46 passes for 590
yards and six touchdowns and
helped the Buckaroos get back
to the playoffs for the fi rst
time since 2014.
Hermiston Youth
Basketball opens
registration
HERMISTON — The
registration period for the
Hermiston Youth Basketball
Association is now open.
Boys and girls in grades
3-6 interested in recreational
basketball are eligible to
register, which can be done at
HermistonBasketballClub.org.
The deadline for registration
is Nov. 13. For more

Eastern Oregon
Gymnastics fi nished up its
last competition of the fall
season on Saturday at the
Last Chance Invite hosted
by Westside Gymnastics in
Tigard.
In the Level 4 USAG
Compulsory class, North
Powder’s Felicia Murphy
was second in beam (8.875),
third in bars (8.35) and then
fi nished fourth in fl oor (8.525)
and all-around (33.650);
Pendleton’s Grace Chay best
fi nish was fi fth in beam (8.45),
Milton-Freewater’s Angelina
Houser was fourth in vault
(8.350) and Pendleton’s
Veenah Schultz was seventh
in beam (8.00).
In the Level 5 Compulsory
class, Pendleton’s Shaelynn
Silva top event was third in
beam (8.425) and Pendleton’s
Alexa Large was 12th in beam
(7.125).
Oregon offense grounded in loss to Huskies

SEATTLE — Oregon’s
offense has no surprises
without Justin Herbert.
For the fourth week in
a row, the Ducks threw for
less than 75 yards and ran
on nearly three-fourths of
their plays during a 38-3 loss
to Washington on Saturday
night at Husky Stadium.
“Obviously, every team
knows we are going to run
the ball,” Oregon center Jake
Hanson said. “That doesn’t
matter because we’ve shown
we can run the football and
still win games.”
That was the case last
week when Oregon ran for
347 yards in a 41-20 win over
Utah, but that is the only win
in fi ve games since freshman
Braxton Burmeister replaced
the injured Herbert at quar-
terback.
Oregon had 247 of its 278
yards against the Huskies on
the ground while running on
55 of 68 offensive plays.

Freeman said. “We want the
identity of this offense to
be the offensive line being
stout because we have some
dudes up there. They know
the defense is keying on the
run, but they are still going
out there and doing their
job.”
Freeman ran 24 times for
122 yards, his fourth straight
game with at least 120 yards
on the ground.
“Royce is a monster,”
UO tight end Jacob Breeland
said. “He’s always amazing
everyone. He’s an animal
running people over and
doing all he can. He keeps
killing it.”
Burmeister has thrown
for a total of 207 yards
during the past four weeks.
“We can run the ball
better if we can throw it
better,” Oregon coach Willie
Taggart said. “It was good
to see our guys can run the
football when everyone
knows we are going to run

Oregon did not have
another drive that covered
more than 20 yards until the
fourth quarter.

“We run the ball, we are
gashing them so we keep
running it, and then when
we do pass the ball, we have
to execute better,” Breeland
said.
Herbert was in uniform
for the second week in a row,
but Taggart said he did not
consider playing him fi ve
weeks after he fractured his
collarbone. The coach said
he is hopeful the sophomore
may be back against Arizona
on Nov. 18 following a bye.

from scrimmage was a
19-yard run by Freeman. The
longest pass was a nine-yard

“Last week, what allowed
us to score points was explo-
sive plays,” Hanson said.
“This week, we did not get
many explosive plays in the

for the most part, but when
you are so one-dimensional
running the ball, you have to
get big plays to spark touch-
downs, and we were not able
to do that.”
Oregon opened the game
with a 15-play drive that
went 62 yards and used
up more than half of the
fi rst quarter before Aidan
Schneider kicked a fi eld goal
that turned out to be the only
points for the Ducks. The
second drive went 54 yards
to the Washington 19-yard
line before Kani Benoit
fumbled and Washington
recovered.
“That was a momentum
change when we fumbled
the ball on that second
drive,” Taggart said. “That

Going winless would be
tough for most football
coaches.
On Saturday at California,
Oregon State’s Cory Hall
dropped his third game since
taking on the interim role for
the Beavers after taking over
for Gary Andersen.
Yet Hall keeps his energy
and that of the players’ as
high as possible.
In the postgame media
room, Hall is straightforward
with his answers but stays
on a positive track. He does
not get noticeable angry or
glum.
Some coaches would
have a hard time with
down-to-the-wire losses to
Colorado and Stanford and a
competitive road loss at Cal.
There’s no doubt Hall
is not happy with losing,
but he chooses to look at
the accomplishments of the
team.
“Tough loss on the road,”
Hall said after the Cal game.
“Again I sit here and say, the
boys battled. What does that

mean? I don’t think you have
seen yet this season this team
quit and I don’t think you

His postgame speech
after the Colorado loss was
a sensation on YouTube and
his attitude has not wavered
following the last two games.
“I love coach Hall to
death and playing for him
is absolutely fantastic,”

said. “And just the way we
are as a team right now and

Andersen combined with the
arrival of a “new” coach.
The Beavers are going
into their fourth game since
that situation, so there seems
to be a distinct change
brought on by Hall.
The next step is to fi nd
a way to win. Oregon State
is at Arizona this Saturday
night.

gotten comfortable with
coach being at the head
and we don’t want another
change. We’re going to try
to win and give him at least
a slight chance of maybe
getting the head job.”
Said linebacker Kee
Whetzel: “I think that we
really want him to be our
coach, but I don’t think
that’s what we’re worried
about when we’re out there
playing football. That’s not
what we’re worried about
just winning the game.”
The Beavers could not
stop the Bears when they
needed to and it was costly.
